1
The American dream, it's a phrase we've all heard before, and for decades, Americans largely agreed on what it meant.
2
Well, now new data suggests that among young people, the American dream may not be defined the same way as older Americans do.
3
NBC10 political commentator
4
Sue O 'Connell is here.
5
She walks us through the data.
6
So what is the American dream in a historical sense, and what do
7
Americans dream of now, Sue?
8
Well, Glenn, as long as America has been a country, we've had the American dream, the principle of the American dream,
9
equality, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
10
You know those words.
11
They're in the U .S.
12
Constitution.
13
And for decades, most of us believed it meant that if you worked hard, followed the rules, you can get a job,
14
own a home, raise a family.
15
But that was then.
16
This is now.
17
Consider the results of a new survey completed by Howdy .com.
18
76 percent of Gen Z and millennials believe the dream is workplace portability, meaning work from home.
19
And it turns out young people may not even need America to realize their American dream.
20
77 percent of those surveyed say they believe their lives would be better outside the U .S.
21
And 51 percent say just leaving the country is the new American dream.
22
Now, you may think there's some anti -American sentiment in those answers, and perhaps there is, but the study makes it clear.
23
Young people want a job and they prefer to work for an American company.
24
They just don't want to have to come into the office every day
25
and would prefer to live everywhere as opposed to owning a single home in a single place.
26
Some would define that as freedom.
27
I mean, Sue, you talk about, you know, working maybe on Zoom, but you're on a beach somewhere and you just don't show the video.
28
That sounds like the American dream.
29
But OK, but we seriously, we do say, you know, work from home.
30
It became popular, we know, because of the pandemic.
31
Are we to believe the coronavirus has had this big of an effect?
32
Well, in a way, Priscilla, yes.
33
The pandemic obviously proved that some members of the American workplace could work from home or from anywhere.
34
But the definition of the American dream always changes and was already changing.
35
Consider this.
36
In 1940, 92 percent of children could expect to earn more than their parents.
37
Today, only about 50 percent of Americans earn more than their parents did.
38
Now, that means that's a dramatic decline in economic mobility and housing costs.
39
Right.
40
Talk about it all the time traditional home ownership
41
which was the cornerstone of the american dream is becoming increasingly unattainable
42
so the elements
43
that defined what the american dream was for decades are no longer available to most americans
44
and so i know for some people having a family would be the american dream
45
so how does the fertility rate factor into all of this
46
so the fertility fertility rate refers to how many children are being born per woman in the u .s here
47
and across the country, across the country and the world, obviously, the fertility rate has been declining for several years.
48
It's now at a historic low of 1 .64 expected births per woman's lifetime.
49
For comparison, in 1960, when I was born, it was 3 .5 children per woman.
50
So there are many reasons why, including affordability.
51
But many people will tell you, Glenn, like you said, a driving force to buy a home or put down roots is starting a family.
52
So when people are delaying children and having smaller families, the need to stay put decreases, and that means it's easier to be a digital nomad.
53
All right, really interesting data coming out of that.
54
Sue O 'Connell, thanks so much.
55
Very interesting, because you know at the top level, it's shocking, but when Sue peels back the layers, it makes all the sense in the world.
56
I know.
57
I mean, the American dream can mean so many different things, but work from home on a beach.
58
I like that.
59
I think you're stuck on that one.
60
That's a good one.

Passive voice be + past participle — ज़ोर इस पर कि क्या होता है, न कि कौन करता हैmay not be defined · being born · was born
Present perfect have/has + past participle — बीता हुआ काम जिसका असर अभी भी हैhas been · has had

वक्ता 7 बार संक्षिप्त रूपों का प्रयोग करता है, जैसे don't, we've, you're।

  • लंबे शब्द — बलाघात सही रखें: fertility /fɝˈtɪləti/, equality /ɪˈkwɑ.lɪ.ti/, mobility /mə(ʊ)ˈbɪlɪti/, commentator /ˈkɑmənˌteɪtəɹ/, coronavirus /kəˈɹoʊnəˌvaɪɹəs/

  • /z/ — इसे “ज” (/dʒ/) न बनाएँ: phrase /ˈfɹeɪ̯z/, oppose /əˈpoʊz/
  • /æ/ — “ऐ” से ज़्यादा खुला: happiness /ˈhæpinɪs/, dramatic /dɹəˈmætɪk/, nomad /ˈnoʊmæd/
