पाठ बनाया जा रहा है...
1
Hi everyone, welcome to another Shadowing Practice Session.
2
I'm Claire, an English teacher and native speaker from the U.S.
3
The purpose of these videos is to practice your pronunciation
4
and overall fluency of the English language with a focus on the American pronunciation.
5
For this session, I'm going to read an email or could be a voicemail that one coworker might send to another.
6
So within the text, you'll hear common idioms or terms of phrases
7
that are really frequently used in the context of an American workplace.
8
So if you live or work in the US, this video is not only going to be really helpful to work on your pronunciation
9
and accent so that you are easily understood, but you will also learn some idioms and phrases
10
that are very common in the workplace and in everyday life in the States.
11
If you like the format of this video, I have a shadowing practice series, which I will link here.
12
So go and check those out.
13
And if you haven't already, please subscribe to my channel and like this video, share it with a friend who's also learning English.
14
It's the best way to support what I do here.

17
All right, let's begin our shadowing practice for today.
18
So first, I'm just going to read through this voicemail or text, and then afterwards, I'll go over some specifics for pronunciation,
19
as well as go over some of these idioms and phrases
20
that I use so that you can feel comfortable and confident using them yourself.
21
Okay, so I'm going be reading the text over here on my computer and follow along as I read.
22
Hey Alex, it's Claire.
23
Just wanted to check in real quick about the report.
24
We're in good shape, but if anything's still up in the air, let me know and I'll take a look before we send it off.
25
I just got off a call with Brian and he flagged a couple of last minute tweaks.
26
Nothing major, but I'll loop you in on his email so you've got it.
27
And just a heads up, I'm going to be out of the office tomorrow.
28
If anything urgent comes up, shoot me a message and I'll do my best to get back to you.
29
Otherwise, I'll hit the ground running first thing Monday.
30
All right, I won't keep you.
31
Just wanted to give you a quick update.
32
Talk soon.
33
All right, now let's go back to the beginning of our voicemail
34
and I'm going to point out some places where I want you to pay attention to my pronunciation in my accent.
35
So we have, hey Alex, it's Claire.
36
It's Claire.
37
Okay?
38
It doesn't have to be overly pronounced T-S.
39
It's Claire.
40
But just whatever your name is, just sort of smooth it together with it.
41
It's Claire.
42
It's Claire.
43
It's Claire.
44
Okay.
45
Just wanted to check in about the report.
46
Again, I mentioned in previous shadowing video,
47
when we have the T at the end or in the middle of a word in the American accent, we often do not pronounce them.
48
Just wanted.
49
Not just wanted, right?
50
Get rid of the T's.
51
Just wanted.
52
Just wanted.
53
Okay, repeat the whole phrase with me.
54
Just wanted to check in real quick about the report.
55
Did you notice any other T's that I didn't pronounce? About.
56
Report.
57
not about
58
and report drop the t's about report just wanted
59
to check in about the report okay moving on we're in good shape
60
but if anything's still up in the air let me know and I'll take a look before we send it off.
61
Okay, here instead of let me know, we can squish them all together.
62
Let me know.
63
Let me know.
64
That's a great one to have because in the workplace, you're going to tell people to let you know something all the time.
65
Let's say that one together.
66
The whole sentence.
67
We're in good shape, but if anything's still up in the air, let me know and I'll take a look before we send it off.
68
Send it off, not send it off, right?
69
That's when we individually learn the pronunciation of words.
70
That's how we'll learn it.
71
But in these shadowing practices, we can take them in chunks, in a phrase.
72
Send it off.
73
Send it off.
74
I just got off a call with Brian and he flagged a couple of last minute tweaks.
75
So again, we have the T dropped in just,
76
I just got off, but also the T at the end of got is more of a D sound, got off, got off.
77
And usually if we have a vowel followed by the T,
78
you have this kind of D sound.
79
I just got off.
80
So instead of dropping it completely, it's softer.
81
I just got off a call with Brian and he flagged a couple of last minute tweaks.
82
A couple of.
83
Say that three words together as a phrase.
84
A couple of.
85
A couple of.
86
Sometimes you might not even hear that sound at the end of of just a couple of,
87
a couple of, a couple of last minute tweaks.
88
Nothing major, but I'll loop you in on his email, so you've got it.
89
Say that one with me.
90
Nothing major, but I'll loop you in on his email, so you've got it.
91
And just a heads up, I'm going to be out of the office tomorrow.
92
Okay, here we have a lot of squished together words.
93
I'm gonna be.
94
Not I'm going to be.
95
Not overly pronounced, but I'm gonna be.
96
I'm gonna be.
97
Out of the office.
98
Out of the office.
99
Out of the office.
100
Squish out of together to make out of.
101
Out of the office.
102
Okay, let's say the whole thing together.
103
And just a heads up, I'm gonna be out of the office tomorrow.
104
If anything urgent comes up, shoot me a message and I'll do my best to get back to you.
105
If anything urgent comes up, shoot me a message and I'll do my best to get back to you.
106
Otherwise, I'll hit the ground running first thing Monday.
107
first thing the s t does not have to be very
108
well pronounced first thing right we can kind of squish all
109
of those sounds together first thing first thing it's basically the
110
drop the t rule drop the T at the at the on the end of first
111
and thing make sure that's unvoiced thing that one's a tricky one
112
if you don't have this sound in your native language okay
113
last phrase all right I won't keep you just wanted to
114
give you a quick update talk soon all right I won't won't drop the T keep you
115
So just wanted to give you a quick update.
116
Talk soon.
117
Okay, so now let's go over some of these phrases that native speakers use super often that I used in this voicemail.
118
First, we have check in real quick.
119
It's a casual way to say you want to briefly follow up something.
120
To check in just means to see how things are going.
121
And this phrase, real quick, implies you're not going to take up a lot of this person's time.
122
It's pretty polite to add that so that you maintain a casual tone.
123
And it just means that you want to quickly follow up.
124
To be in good shape.
125
In this context, talking about a report at work to say we're in good shape, it means everything's going well or it's nearly complete.
126
Up in the air, it means something is undecided or uncertain.
127
To take a look means to review or check something.
128
A very casual way to say you'll review Yeah, I'll take a look.
129
To get off a call with someone.
130
In the voicemail I say, I just got off a call with Brian.
131
And it means I recently finished a phone conversation with Brian.
132
To flag a couple of tweaks.
133
It means to point out a few changes.
134
Imagine when you're fiddling with, you know, a screw or something mechanical and it makes the tweak,
135
tweak sound as you're kind of making last minute adjustments.
136
We can use the same word in a workplace context.
137
To tweak a report, tweak a project means to make small changes to it it.
138
To loop someone in on an email, for example, I said in the voicemail, I'll loop you in on his email.
139
And it means I'll include you in the email or I'll update you.
140
Just a heads up.
141
It's a casual way to warn someone about something or give someone some information they'll need.
142
To hit the ground running.
143
It means to start working efficiently straight away.
144
So in the voicemail, I said, I'll hit the ground running first thing on Monday.
145
And that means because I'm out of the office tomorrow on Monday, I'll work really hard.
146
I'll hit the ground running.
147
And the final phrase I have is, I won't keep you.
148
This is a really polite way to wrap up a conversation or end a conversation.
149
If you're leaving a voicemail, at the end, you might say, all right, I won't keep you.
150
Talk soon.
151
And it just is a polite way to say, that's all I have to say.
152
I'll let you go now.
153
I'm ending the conversation.
154
All right, guys, I hope today's shadowing practice was useful to improve your pronunciation
155
and overall understanding of some of these common phrases in American English.
156
If you want to practice saying the entire voicemail again with me,
157
go back to the part in the video where I just read through it straight through without stopping
158
and see if you can say it along with me.
159
Shadowing practice works best when you can actually say it with me rather than just repeating it.
160
But if you do prefer the method to repeat after me, again, go back to when I read through the voicemail without stopping,
161
and you can pause the video after every phrase.
162
So both approaches work fine.
163
I really hope you enjoyed this video.
164
Thank you so much for watching and sticking to the end.
165
Let me know in the comments how it went for you, and I'll see you in the next one.
166
Bye for now.

  • Up in the air -
