1
This is Catholic Daily Reflections for Monday of the 27th week in Ordinary Time.
2
Today's reflection is entitled, The Good Samaritan.
3
Jesus replied, A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho.
4
They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half dead.
5
A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.
6
Likewise, a Levi came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.
7
But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight.
8
Jews viewed Samaritans as heretics, and Samaritans often harbored disdain for Jews.
9
Though they shared a common faith in the Torah and the same lineage to Abraham,
10
they were deeply divided over temple worship.
11
Jesus tells this parable in response to a question posed by
12
a Jewish scholar of the law who quotes two key passages from the Torah that summarize its essence.
13
The Shema, recited daily,
14
You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart and with your whole being and with your whole strength,
15
Deuteronomy 6 .5 and you shall love your neighbor as yourself, Leviticus 19 .18.
16
At that time, there was considerable debate among
17
Jewish groups about the scope of the commandment to love one's neighbor.
18
The Pharisees typically interpreted neighbor as referring only to fellow
19
Jews, particularly those who faithfully observed the law.
20
This narrow view allowed them to limit the demands of charity and to exclude Gentiles,
21
Samaritans, and even fellow
22
Jews considered sinners.
23
In light of this debate, the scholar asks Jesus, who is my neighbor?
24
Jesus does not engage the debate directly.
25
He doesn't limit who is considered a neighbor.
26
Instead, he shows what it means to be a neighbor to all through the parable of the Good Samaritan,
27
in which he
28
He radically expands the concept by making a Samaritan the model of compassion.
29
This would have shocked his audience.
30
Samaritans were seen as religious outsiders and impure.
31
By choosing a Samaritan as the example of true neighborly love,
32
Jesus teaches that the call to charity must extend to all people without exception.
33
Mercy, not ethnicity, religious identity, or social status, is the true measure of love.
34
In identifying the true neighbor as a Samaritan, Jesus reveals the universal scope of divine charity,
35
and invites all who follow him to imitate that same boundless compassion. Who is your neighbor?
36
Your neighbor is anyone you encounter who is in need of mercy, compassion, or love.
37
To be a neighbor in the sense Jesus teaches is to be moved with compassion and to act with generous love,
38
even when it is inconvenient, uncomfortable, or countercultural.
39
The Good Samaritan teaches us that true charity knows no boundaries
40
and that eternal life is found not only in knowing the law,
41
but in living it through concrete acts of mercy.
42
This parable is not meant to inspire a vague or generalized love for others,
43
but to challenge us to love in practical and concrete ways.
44
The man who fell victim to robbers is a symbol of everyone around us who carries some form of need
45
that we can help meet.
46
For example, it may be the lonely elderly neighbor who needs a visit,
47
the overwhelmed parent who could use encouragement, the co -worker struggling silently with anxiety,
48
or the family member burdened by grief.
49
Each of these is half -dead in some way, wounded emotionally, spiritually, or materially,
50
and placed along our path not by chance, but by divine providence.
51
Reflect today on those whom God has placed along your path.
52
Who is half -dead and in need of your compassion? who is wounded by loneliness, rejection, fear, or suffering.
53
The first grace we need is the grace to truly see them,
54
to notice their presence, to perceive their dignity as children of God,
55
and to recognize the spiritual and moral duty we have to show love.
56
Resolve to act not out of obligation
57
But out of a heart moved by a mercy
58
That reflects the very heart of Christ Let us pray
59
Most merciful Lord You are the good Samaritan Pouring the ointment of your grace
60
Into our wounded souls for healing and relief
61
May I share in your works of mercy by becoming a true neighbor to all in need.
62
Help me to see the dignity of every person
63
and to treat each one with the love that flows from your sacred heart.
64
Jesus, I trust in you.
