1
Well, if you ask me, learning English helps me to help others.
2
SVS acknowledges the traditional custodians of country and their connections and continuous care for the skies,
3
lands and waterways throughout Australia.
4
Hi, my name is Josipa.
5
And I made a promise to my friend that I'd help her raise money for a charity that supports homeless families.
6
A charity is a group that helps people in need.
7
So, I signed up to do a charity run of 10 kilometers because I really believe in what this charity does.
8
A charity run is organized by a charity to raise money.
9
People who take part in the run ask their friends
10
and family to give money to the charity
11
because they're taking part in it and are likely to be very exhausted by the experience and even feel some pain.
12
It's like I'm suffering for this charity so please give money to them.
13
Now, I am not a runner.
14
I am more of a sit -down -and -read -a -book kind of person.
15
So I will be exhausted.
16
And my feet?
17
My feet are likely to hurt.
18
But that's not the part I'm worried about.
19
The hard part?
20
Asking people for money.
21
Like, how do you even say it?
22
Hey, would you like to give me money?
23
Nope.
24
That feels weird.
25
Too direct.
26
Too uncomfortable.
27
It is difficult to ask people to donate.
28
That is, to give something like money, clothes, food or time to help others.
29
So, I started thinking.
30
There must be a better way to ask.
31
a more polite way, a more English way.
32
And there is.
33
Alan and Claire showed me in this dialogue that there are some polite and friendly ways to ask for a donation,
34
without sounding pushy or awkward.
35
A donation is whatever you give to a charity.
36
You don't get anything for it.
37
You give because you want to help.
38
Now let's listen to Alan and Claire at work.
39
Hey Claire, do you have a minute?
40
Sure, what's up?
41
I'm running a charity cake stall this Friday to raise money for a children's hospital.
42
It's part of the community fundraiser I've joined.
43
Would you be open to making a small donation?
44
Oh, that sounds lovely, Alan.
45
But I've already donated to another charity appeal this week.
46
Sorry.
47
Totally understand.
48
No pressure at all.
49
But if you've got a coin or two to spare, it'll go straight to a good cause.
50
Every bit counts, and hey, I'll save you the best cupcake.
51
All right.
52
You got me.
53
I can't say no to a cupcake.
54
Alan is organizing a charity cake stall.
55
That's when people bake cakes and muffins, sell them and give the money to a charity.
56
Alan is really altruistic.
57
That means he helps others just to do something good, not to get anything back.
58
To be completely honest, I'm not sure I'm doing my charity because I'm altruistic.
59
I want to help, yes, but the real reason is it makes me feel good about myself.
60
And that's okay, right?
61
Doing good and feeling good can go together.
62
Now, let's do some good for our English and learn the phrases from the dialogue.
63
Let's listen again to how Alan asked Claire for a donation.
64
I'm running a charity cake stall this Friday to raise money for a children's hospital.
65
It's part of a community fundraiser I've joined.
66
Would you be open to making a small donation?
67
Before asking for money, Alan explained what the fundraiser was for by saying…
68
I'm running a charity cake stall this Friday to raise money for a children's hospital.
69
If you're running something, it means you're organising it, looking after it
70
or making sure it happens alan is running a charity cake stall
71
but you can run other things too for example
72
if you are running a business that means you are managing or owning it alan then said
73
it's part of a community fundraiser i've joined a fundraiser is an event or activity that helps collect money to help others.
74
And a community fundraiser is when people in a neighbourhood,
75
school or local group work together to raise money for something important.
76
After saying what the money is for, the reason for the fundraiser, Alan asked Claire.
77
Would you be open to making a small donation?
78
This is a polite way, not to direct or pushy, to ask someone if they are willing to give a little money to help.
79
Would you be open to?
80
Is the same as saying, are you okay with?
81
Or would you say yes to?
82
And making a small donations means giving a small amount to help.
83
For example, I often make a small donation by giving away clothes that I don't need.
84
I hope that my donations make life a little easier for someone in need.
85
Now let's hear a few more ways in which we can ask for donations.
86
I've got a little fundraiser going.
87
Any chance you'd like to help?
88
Would you be happy to support this cause?
89
Any help you can give would mean a lot.
90
Claire initially said she couldn't donate to Alan's charity.
91
She said...
92
I've already donated to another charity appeal this week.
93
Sorry.
94
A charity appeal is when a charity asks people to give money or help.
95
They may ask for people's donation in a letter, online, on TV, on the radio,
96
or like Alan did, in person.
97
It's called an appeal because the charity is asking for support.
98
Alan then said...
99
Totally understand.
100
No pressure at all.
101
But if you've got a coin or two to spare, it'll go straight to a good cause.
102
Every bit counts, and hey, I'll save you the best cupcake.
103
Notice how Alan showed that he understood Claire's response, but then he tried one more time.
104
But if you've got a coin or two to spare, it'll go straight to a good cause.
105
That's another good phrase we could use when asking for donations.
106
When we ask someone for a coin or two, we are asking for a small amount of money.
107
We also often use the phrase a gold coin donation.
108
This means that you don't have to give a large amount like a $5 or $10 note.
109
And to spare means extra.
110
So if you have some money to spare, that means that you can give,
111
donate a little without causing any problems.
112
Alan said the money he is raising will go straight to a good cause.
113
A good cause is a project or group that helps people or animals who need support, like a charity or community group.
114
For me, running 10 kilometers will be hard, but I believe it will be worth it to support a good cause.
115
Alan also said, Every bit counts.
116
This means that even a small amount is helpful.
117
You could also say, A little help goes a long way.
118
Or if you want to sound more formal, you could say We appreciate any support you can give.
119
You know what?
120
After hearing all the great examples Alan and Claire shared in this episode, I feel ready to help my friend make a difference.
121
So, why don't you listen to their dialogue one more time
122
while I make some phone calls to ask for donations for my friends.
123
Charity Appeal.
124
Hey Claire, do you have a minute?
125
Sure, what's up?
126
I'm running a charity cake stall this Friday to raise money for a children's hospital.
127
It's part of the community fundraiser I've joined.
128
Would you be open to making a small donation?
129
Oh, that sounds lovely, Alan.
130
But I've already donated to another charity appeal this week.
131
Sorry.
132
Totally understand.
133
No pressure at all.
134
But if you've got a coin or two to spare, it'll go straight to a good cause.
135
Every bit counts and hey, I'll save you the best cupcake.
136
Alright, you got me.
137
I can't say no to a cupcake.
138
Hello.
139
Hello.
140
Hi.
141
We are from SBS.
142
Learn English.
143
I'm Josipha, nice to meet you.
144
So I got up early,
145
got in my car and now I'm at Immigrant Women's Speak Out organization in a company of Sunila Kotwal,
146
who is executive officer and works with other women who dedicate all their time to help other women.
147
Hello Sunila, how are you?
148
I'm good, thank you.
149
Why are your services so important for women who need help?
150
Okay, Immigrant Women's Pickout Association of New South Wales,
151
that's our proper name, has been working to support women experiencing domestic family and sexual violence.
152
Our services exist because we are a specialized service for migrant and refugee women.
153
Unfortunately, mainstream services don't always work for migrant women, especially for those on temporary visas.
154
Many of the women who come to us have never asked for help before.
155
Some didn't even know that they could.
156
They've come from places where services are limited and women are silent.
157
So when they come through our doors, we know that it has taken them a lot to get there.
158
And what kind of help do you give to women who are leaving family violence or have no safe place to live?
159
Years ago, when women were visiting us to seek support, they begged to sleep at our office, just to stay safe.
160
That's when we knew that we had to do more.
161
So we opened our own crisis accommodation in 2016, a shelter specifically for migrant women on temporary visas.
162
We now run two crisis accommodations, accommodating 12 single women at any time.
163
Each woman can stay for up to six months while we support them through every step of rebuilding their lives.
164
We provide culturally appropriate support from a caseworker, a counselor.
165
We provide them groceries, food vouchers, transport cards and emotional support.
166
We run programs to improve their mental and physical health, such as self -care, gardening, self -defense and more.
167
We help women find jobs, help them write resumes, prepare for interviews and accompany them to the interviews.
168
We also offer practical skills building in areas like baking, sewing and alteration to help women earn an income,
169
regardless of their English level.
170
You also help them with English, don't you?
171
We do.
172
We run English conversation classes
173
and we also run basic computer classes where we get them email addresses
174
and help them understand what the government emails are asking from them.
175
Can you tell us how can someone in a very practical, concrete way help your organization?
176
What can we do?
177
There are two key ways to support us, financially and practically.
178
Financial donations, both one time and ongoing, are essential to keep our services running.
179
On the practical side, we welcome volunteers to help run our programs.
180
That might mean teaching English, basic computer skills, helping in our garden,
181
or helping us organize one of our five annual women's picnics.
182
And if one wants to join you, try to become a volunteer in your organization where they can find information.
183
We have a website, www .speakout .org .au.
184
All the information about the volunteers is available there.
185
Thank you Sunila for this interview.
186
Thank you.
187
Any help you can give would mean a lot.
188
If you've got a coin or two to spare, it'll go straight to a good cause.
189
If you'd like to practice your speaking skills, and I really recommend it, listen to our bonus episode.
190
It's short, fun, and great for speaking practice.
191
Practicing out loud really helped me.
192
It gave me confidence to speak to people in English.
