1
Mark, you have a podcast, right?
2
Yes, I do.
3
What's your podcast about?
4
It's called Zen Sammich, but it's sort of about Zen.
5
But I also, I cast the net pretty wide.
6
So I talk about a lot of different topics.
7
Like what?
8
Well, I've had guests on there from MMA fighters, if you know what an MMA fighter is,
9
mixed martial arts fighters, to artists and musicians.
10
I've had a famous photographer, pretty much any kind of career field you can imagine.
11
How many episodes have you done so far?
12
Well, I've done about 46 or 47 so far.
13
Is it hard work to produce one?
14
it's a lot more work than i thought when i uh when i started the the project of doing a podcast
15
i thought that it was going to be turning on a microphone
16
and just recording people talking and that'd be it but there is
17
so much more to it from sound editing video editing if i
18
if i record the video of the of an interview uh
19
to marketing there there's a lot more to it than i
20
thought how long have you been doing it i've been doing
21
it for about seven months now seven months all right
22
and um what made you think you know starting a podcast well i originally i had a website
23
that was a kind of blog uh it you know i wrote articles
24
or i would get some people i knew to write articles for it
25
and from that i uh i thought well i would rather record a conversation than write an article
26
and and i enjoy listening to podcasts so i thought why not
27
so the the blog turned into the podcast
28
so um do you love it uh yes i i mean
29
it's one of the most enjoyable things i've ever done as a personal project.
30
Although, like I said before, it involves so much extra work.
31
I don't love everything about it.
32
I don't love marketing it, but I do love the creation part of it.
33
Before becoming a podcaster, what were you doing?
34
Well, I used to be a lawyer
35
and I also used to teach at a university it's a
36
multi -talented um personality well um i guess i just i
37
didn't love those things as much as i do podcasting what
38
other jobs have you done i've had lots of jobs over
39
the years i've worked in the restaurant business i have uh i've worked for a plant nursery.
40
I've worked at a hotel before.
41
But, you know, my main career type jobs were being a lawyer or being a teacher.
42
And I'm trying to turn podcasting into hopefully my final career.
43
So the experience as lawyer and teacher helping podcast?
44
Actually, yes.
45
Being a teacher, because my podcast has a sort of education element to it.
46
You know, I teach people about Zen.
47
So I certainly use some of my previous teaching skills in
48
terms of organizing my thoughts into what I'm going to say as a tool for how I create a podcast episode.
49
If you know I wanted to start a podcasting, what advice would you give me? To just do it.
50
I think the starting part is the hardest.
51
for a number of reasons one people usually hate the sound of their own voice
52
when they hear it recorded
53
because it doesn't sound the same to them as it does in their head
54
when they speak hearing your recorded voice it always sounds funny to people
55
so you have to get used to that part but
56
and you know it's a little nerve -wracking at first you're
57
a little nervous the first time you you try it
58
but eventually you know you get over all that stuff do you uh interview people
59
i do uh almost 50 50 i like half the time i interview someone
60
and the other half of the time it's just me i
61
just do a solo podcast um for solo episode how many
62
hours would you spend to as a preparation well i mean
63
from start to finish you know it's it's it's a maybe 10 hours on an episode uh
64
because then i'll prepare for an hour uh recording it takes not just the amount of time of the episode
65
but i might have to record several times and
66
or re -record then i have to edit it
67
and then of course i've got to do the marketing
68
so you know i'm just guessing but maybe about 10 hours for a single episode.

「Becoming a Podcaster - B2 Listening for High-Intermediate Students」
