1
Spend a day eating through Saigon with me.
2
We're in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and honestly
3
if you only know Vietnamese food as pho and banh mi you are missing out.
4
I've been living here for almost three years now
5
so I'm totally not biased when I say the food scene here is so good.
6
One of my favorite things about eating in Vietnam is that food is literally everywhere.
7
You'll have proper restaurants, tiny family -run shops, street stores, markets, little plastic chairs on the side of the road
8
and sometimes you genuinely can't tell if you're walking into someone's house
9
or about to have the best meal of your life
10
so today i'm taking you guys on a food tour we're filming a vietnam food tour today
11
but zen doesn't know that i actually booked a scooter tour
12
so there's going to be women riding us around ho chi
13
minh city to go to different places to eat to sightsee the thing is Zen's been to Vietnam multiple times
14
but she's never been on a scooter.
15
I can't wait to see her face.
16
Are you excited to eat?
17
It's an episode full of eating.
18
ExoTour has actually been around since 2010
19
and they were the first all -female motorbike tour company in Vietnam
20
which I thought was pretty cool and what I like about their foodie tour is
21
that they specifically don't take you around to the typical touristy spots.
22
The whole idea is to get you outside the typical tourist areas like D1
23
and try more of the dishes that locals actually eat.
24
We've reached the meeting point, we're just waiting for our ride.
25
Our ride is here! Where?
26
The bike!
27
What?
28
What are you doing to me?
29
I'm giving you the true local experience.
30
Oh my god.
31
I knew if I told her earlier she would be like so nervous so now you know it's a bike tour.
32
Like this heaven already.
33
If you've never been on a motorbike before, don't stress like how
34
Zen is here.
35
Look how nervous she is.
36
The tour guides will go through all the safety instructions like how to get on the bike, how to safely get off, all that fun jazz.
37
Now, if you don't want to get super close and personal and hug your driver,
38
you can grab onto the back of the bike and hold on for dear life.
39
Or use your thigh muscles, clamp them together to stabilize.
40
That's what true locals do.
41
This tour is about four and a half hours and they're going to be taking us around five different districts.
42
And apparently we're going to get to eat at least 10 to 12 different dishes.
43
Lucky we've prepared accordingly.
44
I basically starved all day for this.
45
We're starting with a soupy noodle dish.
46
And no, it's not pho.
47
It's banh gan kho, which is a thick crab noodle soup.
48
The noodles are thick, they're chewy, the broth is rich and almost gravy -like.
49
And it's one of those dishes that probably make you realize how many Vietnamese noodle soups there actually are.
50
Actually, maybe we should do a video on that.
51
Just noodle soups alone.
52
This restaurant is pretty big.
53
It has three floors.
54
And most importantly, there was air con.
55
First stop is a banh ganh phu place.
56
A crab noodle soup.
57
We survived.
58
Mok Hai Ba Yo!
59
This is the secret sauce, guys.
60
Chili kumquat lime.
61
It's sugary, salty, spicy.
62
I feel like everyone knows pho but not everyone knows manganku.
63
It's like a thick crabby noodle with tapioca noodles which is kind of like chewy.
64
It's like a udon.
65
It's like a thick udon.
66
Yeah, so there's like prawns, crab cake, there's crab meat.
67
The noodles are chewy.
68
It's got this like bounce.
69
The soup is a little bit on the thicker side.
70
Mmm, it's got like a little bit of sweetness in the crab meat.
71
We're gonna try to do that jujitsu food trend thing.
72
Wait, what's the count then?
73
So we'll be like one, two, three.
74
Okay.
75
Someone put the bowl in!
76
Try again.
77
I want a bit more.
78
I hope it works.
79
The sauce is like slightly tangy, lemony, zesty, sweet.
80
Am I invading your personal space?
81
You have to do everything so close together.
82
The broth is actually really good.
83
It's not like fishy or like too seafood -y like other places like when we've ordered on Grab.
84
Sometimes it doesn't taste like super fresh.
85
You know what I mean?
86
Like this, it's got a subtle sort of like, it's like sweet.
87
Yeah, it's like a sweet soup.
88
A little bit salty, a little bit sweet.
89
Tastes clean, you know what I mean?
90
Like, when you get like, prawn noodles and stuff, it kind of tastes like prawn meat.
91
And the chunks of crab, they're legit.
92
It's not like fake crab.
93
Okay, this place definitely deserves to be in my food guide.
94
If you guys are coming to Saigon and you want like, beauty, fashion, cafes, food, activities to do, check out my guide.
95
Link is below, shameless plug.
96
Oh and this tour, the XL tour is on there as well and they have a special promo.
97
First stop was an absolute hit but we still have plenty of room left in our bellies.
98
I'm ready for the next stop!
99
Next up we're gonna check out a market.
100
We're gonna walk through the market and see what's there.
101
And then grab dessert.
102
Problem is it looks like it might rain.
103
Nooooo!
104
It's more fun.
105
It's more fun when it rains.
106
Lots of chickens here.
107
Lots of seafood.
108
This is like I guess the produce area.
109
Oh there's fresh seafood.
110
Okay guys so this is the local market.
111
You can just see people stop on their bikes, grab a couple of things and then ride to the next store.
112
So this is the local market between
113
District 5 and 6 which used to be like the Chinese
114
or Cantonese area the tour guide was saying this is a really popular place for tourists
115
because it's a place that a lot of the locals come for wholesale
116
so a lot of the trading happens here they don't really sell like single pieces
117
when it comes to the stores but I mean the markets are local markets so feel free to come and visit,
118
get some fresh fruit check it out,
119
it is hustling and bustling like it's busy Vietnamese avocados are like long and odd shaped compared to the husk avocados.
120
Ooh, they got durian!
121
Durian!
122
We ended up getting some tropical fruits as a little palate cleanser.
123
I don't know what this is called in English, but in Vietnamese it's called bong bong, which is such a fun thing to say.
124
Bong bong.
125
It's sweet.
126
It's kind of like tangy.
127
Ooh, I like it.
128
It's like jelly -ish.
129
How's the Chinese seed?
130
Grandmutan Grandmutan Chom chom
131
Actually the previous one had like a little bit of a funkier taste
132
It was like sweet
133
Really sweet If you look at the bottom of the fruit
134
The petals represent how many I don't know pieces are inside
135
Oh I didn't know that
136
Do we have a good one?
137
Yeah Oh me me me
138
The queen of fruits with the queen of chaos.
139
It's good.
140
It's good.
141
It's starting to rain and everyone's rushing.
142
Everyone's rushing to cover up their goods and bringing it in now.
143
The rain began to pour and within minutes, everyone had their stores wrapped up and undercover.
144
Clearly, they're experienced in this.
145
Yours is coming.
146
We will be blue penguins together.
147
They came prepared we've got matching penguin suits.
148
Thankfully it doesn't usually rain for that long in Saigon.
149
We usually get spurts of rains and then it clears up so fingers crossed I've got my fingers crossed.
150
Okay it started to rain again and now rain jackets are back on.
151
This might be the uniform for the rest of today.
152
We're at the next location.
153
Where are we Zen?
154
We are at an outdoor barbecue place.
155
Yeah, barbecue!
156
When in Saigon you have to try a Saigon beer.
157
I got water.
158
I don't know if you guys have ever heard Vina music
159
but there's this beat like it's like a dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun
160
I hope we don't get copyrighted for this.
161
This is the only club we'll go to.
162
This is the mathematics move, it's like plus.
163
Mathematics.
164
Mathematics.
165
Minus.
166
Divide, divide, divide.
167
Divide, divide.
168
And then multiply.
169
Multiply.
170
It's like a how to dance like a true Vietnamese tutorial.
171
First dish is water spinach with garlic.
172
A staple in Vietnamese cuisine.
173
It's got like a nice crunch to it.
174
Refreshing and obviously wet garlic girlies.
175
Spicy, it's got a bit of a kick to it, very garlicky.
176
Oh, so this is gonna be barbecued right here.
177
We didn't even have to barbecue it ourselves.
178
This is amazing.
179
Next is the beef cooked by none other than our Michelin star chef tour guide tea.
180
You gotta grab a piece and then you dip it with like a lemon pepper, salt and pepper with chili.
181
Get that zinginess.
182
Cheers! That hit the spot.
183
That's good.
184
The music is just sending me like...
185
Juicy lemongrass pork belly.
186
Dip it in this...
187
Sweet sauce Wow That's good the pork has like the perfect amount of fat to like lean meat
188
And then the lemongrass very fragrant the sauce is kind of like a spicy sweet chili
189
Oh, this is good.
190
Haimayo!
191
Special dish wrapped in foil.
192
They're unboxing it.
193
Oooh!
194
It's like mixed veggies.
195
Melt in your mouth.
196
Egg tofu.
197
Okay.
198
Mixed veggies, tofu.
199
Oooh!
200
I feel like it's kind of buttery, melting your mouth.
201
It's sweet.
202
I thought it was salted egg, but it's just like tofu egg.
203
It's got like a skin around it.
204
We're looking quite dewy.
205
Local restaurants like this are usually where locals hang out with their friends after work.
206
They eat, they drink, and sometimes they even play games.
207
Our guide taught us one.
208
This is a game that tests your chopstick and teamwork skills.
209
We split up into two groups and first group to pick up 10 peanuts and pop it in the bottle wins.
210
It sounds easy but it's a lot harder than it looks because the other team can sabotage you.
211
Can you guys guess who won?
212
Let's just say it wasn't me.
213
But I'm totally not mad.
214
Then we enjoyed the rest of the fruit from the market.
215
Nom nom nom nom nom nom nom nom nom.
216
The sun went down and we took a little cruise around the narrow streets of D4.
217
The streets here are very tight, but oh so lively.
218
Like there's restaurants, shops and little street stalls all along the side.
219
It was a vibe.
220
This is our last food spot for the night.
221
Located in District 4, which used to be known as the Gangster District of Ho Chi Minh City
222
But since then it's cleaned up and people like coming here for their seafood
223
and night vibes I think it's like rated in Time Out magazine as one of the top 10 or top 11 neighbourhoods
224
And we got cream
225
This is very new to me because I'm usually in bed by this time
226
But I'm out like
227
It's like peanutty, you've got the spring onions, you've got the fish sauce
228
Adds that like sweetness spiciness.
229
There's nothing better than freshly grilled seafood
230
Crab already peeled.
231
Yes, bit of lemon pepper chili.
232
Okay, cheers It's sweet guys
233
It's got that sweet juice crumb meat and it's so much better when someone else pulls it for you.
234
We're spoiled for today today.
235
Not only do they serve seafood they also serve like a stir -fried rice cake with eggs
236
and you dip it in a special soy sauce.
237
It looks like a Singaporean dish right?
238
It looks like carrot cake.
239
Carrot cake.
240
It kind of does it looks like carrot cake.
241
There's like papaya shreds and then the thick soy sauce.
242
Cheers.
243
it's got a nice like crunch to it on the outside it's got okay it's a simple dish
244
but it's a yummy one we finished the night off with two desserts a sweet
245
and savory coconut sticky rice had a very interesting taste
246
and then a rich creamy cheese yogurt which is very popular in vietnam
247
and that was our last stop of the night honestly this is one of my favorite ways to experience saigon you
248
You get on the back of a bike, weave through parts of the city you probably wouldn't find on your own,
249
you eat way too much food, and somehow still make room for two desserts.
250
So I'd say today was a success.
251
We're full, slightly sweaty, and borderline food -combed.
252
That's it for this video.
253
Thanks for tuning in to your Kitchen Queens of Chaos.
254
We're out the kitchen this time.
255
We're out of the kitchen, but it's still chaotic.
256
