How do you answer the most common IELTS Speaking Part 1 questions in 2025?
2
Are you ready to find out?
3
Hello, it's Keith from the Keith Speaking Academy, here to help you become a more confident speaker of English.
4
Today, I'm going to show you how to answer some of the most common IELTS Speaking Part 1 questions this year.
5
You may have seen me do some reels and shorts, giving some sample answers at different levels.
6
Well, today I'm going to go even deeper.
7
I'm going to give you a simple answer and then an even better answer.
8
But I'm going to explain why it's better
9
and how you can make your answers much better so you can get a higher score in the IELTS speaking test.
10
Okay, let's look at the first topic, which is talking about where you live.
11
Okay, now remember, in part one, you want to give short answers, but develop a little bit, maybe two to three sentences,
12
and you're talking about you, your life, your experience.
13
Okay, so let's have a look at the question.
14
First, I'll show you a simple answer, and then an even better answer.
15
So, do you live in a house or an apartment?
16
I live in an apartment.
17
It's on the seventh floor and it's in the city centre.
18
There's lots of space and also we are close to a park.
19
Okay, a nice, simple, correct answer.
20
Now let's see an even better answer.
21
So, I live in an apartment with my family.
22
we actually live on the seventh floor of a high-rise building right in the city centre.
23
It's really spacious and there's a great balcony overlooking our local park.
24
Okay, so what made this second answer even better?
25
First thing is connectors.
26
Simple connectors like So, just connecting.
27
Secondly, I use what I call emphasis words.
28
Words like actually.
29
So instead of we live on the seventh floor, we actually live on the seventh floor.
30
Right?
31
Just emphasizing.
32
Right.
33
Right in the city center.
34
The house is right in the city center.
35
That right is emphasizing.
36
Thirdly, topic-specific vocabulary.
37
The examiner wants to know if you can talk about this topic of houses and where you live with that specialised vocabulary.
38
So use one or two words if you can.
39
Here, I've got high-rise building, balcony, topic-specific vocabulary.
40
Fourth, adjectives.
41
They really embellish your answers.
42
Words like spacious, having a lot of space.
43
Finally, five adverbs.
44
Adverbs, again, will just enrichen your communication, right?
45
Here I said, it's really spacious.
46
Really, right?
47
Adverbs like pretty, really, fairly, quite, and so on.
48
Okay, that is how we've made our first answer even better.
49
Let's move on.
50
Okay, the next question is about the city where you live.
51
Let's see a simple answer.
52
Tell me about the city where you live.
53
Well, I live in Manchester, which is a big city.
54
There's a lot of traffic.
55
And to be honest, I find it too noisy.
56
Now, let's see how we can make it even better.
57
I live in a pretty big city, Manchester, which is up in the north of England.
58
There's an awful lot of traffic and traffic jams, especially in the rush hour.
59
For me, it's far too noisy.
60
I think I prefer to live in the countryside.
61
Okay, so what made this second answer even better?
62
Again, first of all, notice the adverbs and adjectives, right?
63
I said I live in a pretty big, pretty big, it just gives it a richer sense, right?
64
There's an awful lot of traffic, right?
65
There's traffic, okay.
66
There's a lot of traffic?
67
Good.
68
There's an awful lot of traffic, even better.
69
In addition, we've got, again, topic-specific vocabulary.
70
So vocabulary related to the city where I live.
71
Words like traffic jam, rush hour.
72
Simple, just one or two, but it shows the width, great word, the width of vocabulary I have.
73
Finally, I make a comparison.
74
But not only a simple comparison, instead of saying it's too noisy, I say it's far too noisy.
75
So it's exaggerating or emphasizing the comparison, right?
76
It's easy.
77
It's far too easy.
78
It's far too noisy.
79
Really nice.
80
Let's move on.
81
Okay, let's look next at the topic of personal routine and preferences.
82
Very often in part one, you may be asked, do you prefer A or B?
83
Okay, so let's have a look at the question about mornings or evenings and a simple answer first.
84
Do you prefer mornings or afternoons?
85
I prefer the mornings.
86
I have more energy and I can get more things done in the mornings.
87
I usually feel too tired to do anything in the evenings.
88
Nice.
89
Let's see how I make it even better.
90
Well, I'm definitely an early bird.
91
I mean, I've always been an early riser.
92
so I usually get up when the sun rises without even setting my alarm clock.
93
I just feel much more energetic and productive in the mornings,
94
especially compared to the evenings when I feel drained and I just want to disconnect in front of the TV.
95
Okay, so what makes the second one an even better answer?
96
First of all, again, topic-specific vocabulary.
97
Things like an early bird or an early riser.
98
Okay.
99
Setting my alarm clock.
100
Notice when you're learning vocabulary to focus on the collocation, to set your alarm clock.
101
Right.
102
It's to set the time.
103
So when you're using new vocabulary, think about the collocation.
104
What are the words that go together?
105
Right.
106
Setting my alarm clock.
107
also here i use very very powerful way of making an answer better
108
and it's to use a present perfect tense after the present simple super easy
109
but super effective okay using different tenses overall is good right
110
but here i say i am an early bird present simple i've always been an early riser Present perfect,
111
which means something that I began years ago and continue until today.
112
I have always been an early riser.
113
It's easy.
114
Present simple, then the present perfect.
115
This is the state now, and this is from the past to now.
116
Okay.
117
Well, I'm definitely an early bird.
118
I've always been an early riser.
119
And notice when you're speaking, we often make the contraction.
120
I've been.
121
You don't have to, but it's nice.
122
Secondly, thirdly, speaking fillers.
123
Words like, well, I mean, you know, just.
124
So here I said, I mean, I'm definitely an early bird.
125
I mean, I've always been an early riser.
126
And then I use the word just.
127
And just is kind of what we call a hedging word.
128
It makes it a bit softer.
129
So instead of saying, I feel more energetic, I just feel more energetic.
130
I just feel more energetic.
131
It doesn't really mean anything, but it's one of these speaking filler words, which is really powerful, right?
132
I think I use it later.
133
I say, I just want to disconnect.
134
I just want to disconnect.
135
Finally, notice the adverbs and adjectives.
136
Here, adjectives I'm using.
137
Energetic, productive, drained, tired, really tired.
138
Really nice adjectives.
139
Again, they kind of embellish the answer.
140
Lovely.
141
Let's move on.
142
Okay, the next question is about free time, hobbies.
143
Let's look at a simple answer.
144
What do you do in your free time?
145
I try to relax.
146
I like walking.
147
I go to the park with my dog.
148
We walk around.
149
Yeah, I like it a lot.
150
Very nice.
151
Let's make it even better.
152
So whenever I get free time, I tend to take my dog for a walk in the local park.
153
We'll stroll around for half an hour or so, or until he gets too tired.
154
He is getting on a bit.
155
Yeah, so that's my favourite way to spend my free time and unwind.
156
Okay, so what made it better?
157
A lot of the same things.
158
One of the first things is very often we say, I usually do this.
159
I usually do that.
160
You can change that.
161
You can say, I tend to.
162
I tend to.
163
I tend to take my dog for a walk or I typically take my dog for a walk.
164
OK, just a nice variation.
165
Again, topic specific vocabulary about free time.
166
Stroll.
167
Unwind to relax.
168
OK, nice, easy to use words here.
169
One of the techniques I use in this answer is to add extra information.
170
When you're speaking, it's different from writing.
171
There's less structure.
172
So we tend to say something and then add something, then add something and add something.
173
And so it becomes a complex sentence as we're adding bits of information.
174
Here, I say, we'll stroll around.
175
We will, as in habit, we will stroll around for half an hour or so.
176
And then I add, or until he gets too tired.
177
And then I add more.
178
He's getting on a bit.
179
He's getting on means he's getting old.
180
So it's just simple adding information.
181
it actually, in spoken English, this is creating more complex structures, okay?
182
Really easy to do.
183
Add bits of information.
184
Don't worry too much about linking.
185
If you can, it's good, but you don't always have to.
186
All right, great.
187
Let's move on to our final topic.
188
Okay, another very, very popular common topic, work or study, okay?
189
here's a question and a really nice simple answer.
190
What do you do?
191
Do you work or are you a student?
192
I'm a student.
193
I'm studying French at the university.
194
I'm in my first year.
195
It's an interesting course and the teachers are really good.
196
Yeah.
197
Okay, now let's level up the answer.
198
So I'm an undergraduate student at Manchester University.
199
I'm studying French, as a matter of fact.
200
I've been on this course for around six months now, and I'm loving it.
201
I mean, it's challenging for sure.
202
But the teachers, even though they're pretty strict, are really supportive.
203
So how have we made this even better?
204
We're doing a lot of the tricks that we've talked about so far.
205
Let's have a look we're using these speaking fillers
206
or what i sometimes call emphasis words like as a matter of fact yeah i can say i'm studying french
207
or i'm studying french as a matter of fact just emphasizing i mean i use for sure
208
and these are They're all kind of simple speaking fillers.
209
They're helping connect.
210
They're making it sound like natural spoken English.
211
This is where you become more natural and not just robotic, okay?
212
I also do this thing with present simple, present perfect.
213
Different tenses.
214
I'm studying French.
215
I've been on this course for six months.
216
I have been on this course for six months.
217
I'm studying and then you kind of go back in time.
218
I started six months ago until now.
219
I've been contraction.
220
I've been on this course for six months.
221
Also, I do something here about adding information.
222
Do you remember last time I talked about adding information?
223
Here, we do it particularly with a relative clause, right?
224
So it's the teachers, comma, are really supportive.
225
The teachers are really supportive.
226
The bit in commas is the extra information.
227
The teachers, even though they're pretty strict, are really supportive.
228
Okay.
229
It's a more complex way of adding information, but it's easy to do written.
230
It's a little more challenging spoken because you need to be more fluent to make it work.
231
The teachers, even though they're pretty strict, are really supportive.
232
If you say this slowly, you would have to put they at the end.
233
But the teachers, even though they're pretty strict, they are really supportive.
234
So you can add the they at the end if you feel you're going too slowly.
235
The important thing is extra information, extra language for the examiner to see how good you are, how good you really are in English.
236
Great.
237
So today I've shown you how to make your IELTS speaking part one answers even better
238
so you can show the examiner just how good you really are.
239
So just to remind you the different things you can do, you can use simple connectors.
240
So, well, emphasis words, speaking fillers.
241
I mean, as a matter of fact, you can use or think about topic-specific vocabulary.
242
Think about adjectives and adverbs.
243
Pretty good, fairly good, an awful lot of traffic.
244
Think about different tenses, especially the present simple and the present perfect.
245
I'm a teacher.
246
I've been doing this job for donkey's years.
247
Think about adding extra information and also making comparisons.
248
All of these, of course, don't do all of them in one answer, but use them and think about them as you're practicing
249
and then you'll really be able to show off the language you've got to the IELTS speaking examiner.
250
Build your confidence.
251
That's it.
252
If you want all of this information, kind of a summary, there is a PDF you can download for free from the website.
253

258
Join the membership.
259
