There is / there are

there is / there are は、何かが存在すること、どこかにある・いることを表します。ふつうは、それを初めて話題に出すときに使います。

• There's a pharmacy near my house.

  家の近くに薬局があります。

• There are twelve students in my class.

  私のクラスには生徒が12人います。

• There's some rice in the cooker.

  炊飯器にご飯が少しあります。

💡「ある場所に何かがある」と言うときに have を使うのは間違いです。「My town has a big market」は正しいですが、「In my town has a big market」は誤りです。There is a big market in my town と言いましょう。

動詞は、その後ろに来る名詞に合わせます。

いくつか並べるとき、日常会話では最初の名詞に合わせるのがふつうです：There's a desk and two chairs in the room.

• There isn't a lift in this building.

  この建物にはエレベーターがありません。

• There's no sugar left.

  砂糖がもう残っていません。

• Are there any good cafés around here?

  この辺りにいいカフェはありますか？

• How many people are there in your family?

  何人家族ですか？

変わるのは be の部分だけで、「there」はそのままです。

• There was a storm last night.

  昨夜、嵐がありました。（過去・単数）

• There were a lot of people at the concert.

  コンサートにはたくさんの人がいました。（過去・複数）

• There will be a meeting on Friday.

  金曜日に会議があります。

• There's going to be a test next week.

  来週テストがあります。

• There has been an accident on the highway.

  高速道路で事故がありました。

何かを初めて話題に出すときは there is / are を使います。2回目からは it（単数）や they（複数）で受けます。

• There's a new bakery on our street. It's really good.

  うちの通りに新しいパン屋ができました。とてもおいしいです。

• There are two windows in my room, but they're very small.

  私の部屋には窓が2つありますが、とても小さいです。

• ✗In my school has a big library.

  ✓There is a big library in my school.

  ある場所に何かがある → there is。

• ✗There is many shops.

  ✓There are many shops.

  複数名詞 → there are。

• ✗There are some water.

  ✓There is some water.

  water は数えられない名詞 → there is。

• ✗Is there any eggs?

  ✓Are there any eggs?

  eggs は複数 → are。
