There is / there are

用 there is / there are 表示某物存在或在某處——通常是第一次提到它的時候。

• There's a pharmacy near my house.

  我家附近有一家藥店。

• There are twelve students in my class.

  我們班有十二個學生。

• There's some rice in the cooker.

  電飯鍋裡還有點米飯。

💡中文的“有”既表示“擁有”也表示“存在”，所以容易說成 “In my town has a big market”，這是錯的。“My town has a big market” 可以，但表示某地有某物，最自然的說法是 There is a big market in my town。

動詞和它後面的名詞保持一致。

列舉多個事物時，日常口語通常跟第一個名詞保持一致：There's a desk and two chairs in the room.

• There isn't a lift in this building.

  這棟樓沒有電梯。

• There's no sugar left.

  糖用完了。

• Are there any good cafés around here?

  這附近有好的咖啡館嗎？

• How many people are there in your family?

  你家有幾口人？

只有 be 的部分變化，“there” 保持不變。

• There was a storm last night.

  昨晚有一場暴風雨。（過去，單數）

• There were a lot of people at the concert.

  音樂會上有很多人。（過去，複數）

• There will be a meeting on Friday.

  星期五有一個會議。

• There's going to be a test next week.

  下週會有一次考試。

• There has been an accident on the highway.

  高速公路上發生了一起事故。

第一次引出某物時用 there is / are。再次談到它時，用 it（單數）或 they（複數）。

• There's a new bakery on our street. It's really good.

  我們這條街新開了一家麵包店。它真的很好。

• There are two windows in my room, but they're very small.

  我房間有兩扇窗戶，但它們很小。

• ✗In my school has a big library.

  ✓There is a big library in my school.

  某地有某物 → 用 there is。

• ✗There is many shops.

  ✓There are many shops.

  複數名詞 → 用 there are。

• ✗There are some water.

  ✓There is some water.

  water 是不可數名詞 → 用 there is。

• ✗Is there any eggs?

  ✓Are there any eggs?

  eggs 是複數 → 用 are。
