There is / there are

Débutant

Forme et emploi

there is/are + nom — dire que quelque chose existe ou se trouve quelque part

1.À quoi ça sert

On utilise there is / there are (= « il y a ») pour dire que quelque chose existe ou se trouve quelque part — en général quand on le mentionne pour la première fois.

  • There's a pharmacy near my house.

Il y a une pharmacie près de chez moi.

  • There are twelve students in my class.

  • There's some rice in the cooker.

N'utilise pas have pour dire que quelque chose existe dans un lieu : « My town has a big market » est correct, mais « In my town has a big market » est faux. Dis plutôt There is a big market in my town.

2.Is ou are ?

Le verbe s'accorde avec le nom qui vient après lui (alors que « il y a » ne change jamais en français).

S'emploie avecExemple
there is (there's)noms au singulier, noms indénombrablesThere's a problem. There's some milk.

Dans une énumération, à l'oral, on accorde généralement avec le premier nom : There's a desk and two chairs in the room.
