Sherlock?
2
Sherlock?
3
There is nothing wrong with me!
4
Do you understand?
5
You want me to prove it, yes?
6
Looking for a dog, yes?
7
Great big dog.
8
That's your brilliant theory.
9
Good, excellent.
10
Yes, where shall we start?
11
Good, excellent.
12
Yes, where shall we start?
13
Looking for a dog, yes, great big dog, that's your brilliant theory.
14
Cheshire, monsieur.
15
Good, excellent.
16
Yes, where shall we start?
17
How about them?
18
The sentimental widow and her son, the unemployed fisherman.
19
The answer's yes.
20
Yes?
21
She's got a west side interior called whiskey, not exactly what we're looking for.
22
Sherlock, for God's sake.
23
Look at the jumper he's wearing, hardly worn.
24
Clearly he's uncomfortable in it.
25
Maybe it's because of the material, more likely the hideous pattern suggests it's a present, probably Christmas.
26
So he wants into his mother's good books.
27
Why?
28
Almost certainly money.
29
He's treating her to a meal, but his own portion is small.
30
That means he wants to impress her, but he's trying to economise on his own food.
31
Well, maybe he's just not hungry.
32
No, small plate starter.
33
He's practically licked it clean.
34
She's nearly finished her pavlova.
35
If she treated him, he'd have as much as he wanted.
36
He's hungry all right and not well off, you can tell that.
37
But instead of his cuffs and shoes.
38
How do you know she's his mother?
39
Who else would give him a Christmas present like that?
40
Well, could he be an aunt or an elder sister?
41
But mother's more likely.
42
Now, he was a fisherman.
43
Scarring batten on his hands, very distinctive fish hooks.
44
They're all quite old now.
45
I would suggest he's been unemployed for some time.
46
Not much industry in this part of the world, so he turned to his widowed mother for help.
47
Widowed?
48
Yes, obviously.
49
She's got a man's wedding being on a chain around her neck.
50
Clearly her late husband's are too big for her finger.
51
She's well dressed, but her jewelry's cheap.
52
She could afford better, but she's kept it sentimental.
53
Pow, the dog.
54
Tiny little hairs all over the leg from where it gets a little bit too friendly.
55
No hairs above the knees, suggesting it's a small dog.
56
Probably a terrier.
57
In fact, it is a West Island Terrier called Whiskey.
58
How the hell do you know that, Sherlock?
59
Because she was on the same train as us, and I heard her calling its name, and that's not cheating.
60
That's listening.
61
I use my senses, John, unlike some people.
62
So you see, I am fine, but I've never been better.
63
So just leave me alone.
64
Yeah.
65
Okay.
66
Okay.
67
Now why would you listen to me?
68
I'm just your friend.
69
I don't have friends.
70
No. I wonder why.
71
It's a bit small on that screen.
72
Can you read it?
73
Yes.
74
Code, obviously.
75
I had one of the best cryptographers in the country take a look at it, though he was mostly upside down, as I recall.
76
Couldn't figure it out.
77
What can you do, Mr. Holmes?
78
Go on.
79
Impress a girl.
80
There's a margin variable, and I'm pretty sure there's a 747 leaving Heathrow tomorrow at 6.30 in the evening for Baltimore.
81
Apparently it's going to save the world.
82
Not sure how that could be true, but give me a moment.
83
I've only been in the case for eight seconds.
84
Oh, come on, it's not code.
85
These are seat allocations on a passenger jet.
86
Look, there's no letter I because it can be mistaken for a one.
87
No letters past K.
88
Within the plane is the limit.
89
The numbers always appear randomly and not in sequence.
90
But the letters have little runs of sequence all over the place.
91
Families and couples sitting together.
92
Only a jumbo is wide enough to need a letter K or a row's past 55, which is why there's always an upstairs.
93
There's a row 13, which eliminates the more superstitious airlines.
94
Then there's a star of the flight number 007 that eliminates a few more.
95
And assuming a British point of origin, which would be logical considering the original source of the information, and assuming from the increased pressure on you lately that the crisis is imminent, the only flight
96
that matches all the criteria into parts within the week is the 6.30 to Baltimore tomorrow evening from Heathrow Airport.
97
Please, I feel obliged to tell me that was remarkable or amazing.
98
John's expressed that thought in every possible variant available to the English language.
99
Thank you.
