2
One way we can separate a solution is through a process called distillation.
3
Let's take a look at this process in action.
4
Step 1.
5
Set up the distillation apparatus.
6
The typical distillation apparatus consists of a burner, a distillation flask containing the substance we want to distill,
7
a thermometer, a condenser, a receiving flask, and some corks to connect the components.
8
Step 2.
9
Cool the condenser.
10
Cool water is fed into and out of the condenser to keep it at a low temperature.
11
This is essential for condensing the vapour back into a liquid.
12
Step 3.
13
Heat the substance.
14
The burner is used to heat the substance we wish to distill in the distillation flask.
15
As the temperature rises, keep an eye on the thermometer to monitor the boiling point of the substance.
16
Step 4.
17
Vaporisation As the substance is heated, it begins to evaporate and boil,
18
causing vapour to rise from the liquid in the distillation flask.
19
Step 5.
20
Vapour enters the condenser The vapour passes through the neck of the distillation flask and enters the condenser.
21
The condenser is kept cool by the circulating water, which causes the vapour to cool and condense back into a liquid.
22
Step 6.
23
Collection of the distillate The condensed liquid,
24
known as the distillate, drips from the condenser into the receiving flask.
25
This distillate is the purified substance that we aimed to separate from the mixture in the distillation flask.
26
Step 7.
27
Completion of distillation
28
the distillation process continues until all of the desired substance has been vaporized
29
and condensed into the receiving flask the substance remaining in the distillation flask
30
which has a higher boiling point is called the residue
31
or the still bottom by carefully controlling the temperature
32
and collecting the distillate at the appropriate boiling point we can separate
33
and purify the desired substance from a mixture using the distillation apparatus.
34
This method is widely used for various purposes, such as purifying water, perfumery and the production of essential oils.

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "Separating Solutions – Distillation" using the Shadowing technique — a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker — not just repeating words. With 15–30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
