Well, hello and welcome to this English lesson about outdoor places.
2
The first outdoor place I want to help you learn about is called a campground.
3
If you look across the river behind me,
4
you will see a campground.
5
A campground is a place where you go to set up a tent
6
or where you bring your trailer to spend some time living in the great outdoors.
7
Maybe you'll go for a weekend,
8
maybe you'll go for a week or two in the summer.
9
You'll go to a campground to experience living in the great outdoors.
10
And here are the things that you would do at a campground.
11
You would go there to camp.
12
You might go there to hike.
13
You might go there to fish.
14
You might go there to spend some time with family and friends.
15
You might have a campfire.
16
So a campground is a place where you go to live in a tent
17
or to live in a trailer to spend some time in the great outdoors.
18
Before we go to the next place though,
19
I want to talk about an online place and the sponsor of this video.
20
This video is sponsored by Preply.
21
Preply is a place where you can go
22
if you want to find an English tutor to help you have great English conversations and to learn more English.
23
There's more information in the description below.
24
There's a link to Preply there,
25
and if you use that link you'll get 50% off your first lesson.
26
But I'll talk about that more later.
27
Right now I think we we should go to the next outdoor place.
28
This is a pier.
29
A pier is a walkway that goes out into a body of water.
30
This pier is rather large and it's made out of concrete,
31
but a pier can also be made out of wood.
32
When you come to a pier,
33
there's a few things that you can do.
34
You can come here to stroll.
35
You can come here to walk.
36
You can come here to fish.
37
You might even come here to dock your boat.
38
That's where you park your boat against the pier.
39
So this is a pier,
40
a walkway that goes out into a body of water.
41
A skate park is a place where you can go skateboarding,
42
a place where you can bring your inline skates and go skating.
43
I'm not super familiar with what to do at a skate park,
44
but I certainly know what a skate park looks like.
45
A skate park is usually in a town or city,
46
and it's built by the town or city so that teenagers and kids have something to do.
47
Apparently, if teenagers and kids don't have something to do,
48
Maybe they get up to no good.
49
So a skate park, a place where you can bring your skateboard.
50
Hopefully you're wearing a helmet and elbow pads and knee pads so that you have protection
51
and you can go skateboarding or
52
if you have inline skates you can put them on and you can do tricks here with them as well.
53
A forest is a place with a lot of trees and plants.
54
Sometimes we call it a wooded area meaning that there's lots of trees
55
and there's usually some wild animals and there's definitely lots of insects,
56
you might even see some today.
57
There's something you won't see very often in a forest though,
58
you usually don't see very many people.
59
But if you do go to a forest and if the law allows,
60
if it's allowed, you might go to the forest to hike,
61
you might go to the forest to camp,
62
or you might go to the forest to hunt.
63
So the forest is a wooded area,
64
a place with lots of plants and definitely lots of trees.
65
A vineyard is a place where grapes are grown.
66
Sometimes the grapes are for eating and sometimes the grapes are used to make wine.
67
The farmer who runs the vineyard does really two things.
68
They grow grapes.
69
I guess originally they would plant the grapes and then they also harvest the grapes.
70
A vineyard is a beautiful place to visit.
71
There are many vineyards in my area and I always enjoy driving past them.
72
So a vineyard is a place where they grow grapes.
73
This is a boardwalk and you might have guessed why it's called a boardwalk.
74
It's made out of boards and it's a place where you can go to walk.
75
A boardwalk leads to water or more commonly goes along the water,
76
along a river or a lake or another body of water.
77
If you go to a boardwalk,
78
there's a few things you can do.
79
You can go there to walk.
80
You can go there to run.
81
You can go there to jog.
82
You can go there sometimes to fish.
83
So this is a boardwalk.
84
It's made out of boards.
85
It's a place where you can go to walk.
86
It's a boardwalk.
87
This is a beach.
88
A beach is a sandy area,
89
sometimes a rocky area along a lake,
90
a sea or an ocean.
91
The beach is a great place to come to to see the sunrise or to see the sunset.
92
It's a great place to come on the weekend
93
or to come during the week whenever you want to hear the sound of the waves.
94
The types of things that people do at the beach,
95
people come to the beach to go swimming,
96
people come to the beach to suntan if you're into that sort of thing,
97
people come to the beach to play beach volleyball or to play frisbee.
98
It's a place to relax.
99
So this is a beach.
100
I love coming to the beach because I love the sound of the waves.
101
Before we go to the next outdoor place,
102
I want to take a minute to talk about Preply,
103
the sponsor of this video.
104
As many of you know,
105
I think it's extremely important that you find an English tutor to take your English learning to the next level,
106
and I think Preply is a great place to find one.
107
If you use the link in the description below and visit Preply,
108
you will find so many tutors ready to create personalized one-on-one lessons just for you.
109
And I think meeting with an actual person has so many benefits.
110
I mean, there are a lot of ways to practice English.
111
You can watch YouTube videos and use apps,
112
but I think a person is just more helpful.
113
And I think you will make a great duo as you continue to learn English.
114
If you're interested, there's a link in the description below.
115
And the bonus is if you use that link,
116
you'll get 50% off your first lesson at Preply.
117
So I think you should do it.
118
Click the link below, visit Preply,
119
find a tutor and take your English learning to the next level.
120
This is a bandshell.
121
We sometimes call it a bandstand.
122
A bandshell or bandstand is a place where you can come to see outdoor performances or to see outdoor concerts.
123
It's kind of like a stage, but it's built outside.
124
it's nice to see concerts inside but in the summer it's nice to come and see them outdoors.
125
When you come to a bandstand or bandshell you come here to listen to music,
126
you might come here to see a performance or you might come here to see your favourite band.
127
So this is a bandstand or bandshell,
128
it's a place you come to see an outdoor performance and to listen to some music.
129
So there's no outdoor market here today and by the way if an outdoor market is mostly farmers,
130
we call it a farmer's market.
131
There isn't one today but this is where we come to sell our flowers in the summer
132
and so I'll find some footage from last summer to show you.
133
An outdoor market or farmer's market is obviously a place where vendors can set up their booth
134
or stall and where customers can come
135
and enjoy the beautiful clear fresh outdoor air while they shop for the things they need.
136
So an outdoor market is simply a place to buy things,
137
but it happens to be outside.
138
The area you see behind me now is called a pasture.
139
A pasture is a large grassy area where a farmer will put their animals to graze.
140
So if you have sheep or goats or cows or horses,
141
you might put them in your pasture so that they can eat grass.
142
And when cows eat grass and when animals eat grass,
143
we call this grazing.
144
So this large area behind me is called a pasture.
145
It's a place where you put farm animals so that they can graze.
146
Behind me you can see a field.
147
A field is a large open area where a farmer will grow crops.
148
The crop in this field is winter wheat.
149
It's early spring here in Ontario,
150
Canada, and that's the crop that is currently growing.
151
All of the other fields still need to be planted.
152
There are three things a farmer will do in their field.
153
They will plant crops, they will grow crops,
154
and they will harvest crops.
155
So this is a field,
156
it's a large open area where a farmer will grow crops.
157
This is a playground.
158
A playground is a place where kids come to play.
159
Jen and I don't come to playgrounds very often anymore because our kids are getting a lot older.
160
this is a playground, a place where kids would come to play.
161
When you go to the playground,
162
you might go on the slide,
163
you might go on a swing,
164
you might go on the teeter totters,
165
and all of those things are lots of fun for kids.
166
So this is a playground,
167
a place where kids come to play.
168
This is a park.
169
A park is a large public area with grass, trees, and paths.
170
A park is a great place to come to when you have a day off.
171
When you go to the park you can lay on a blanket and read a book.
172
You can come to the park to have a picnic.
173
You can come to the park to relax.
174
So this is a park,
175
a large public area with trees and grass and paths and picnic tables and benches.
176
It's a great place to come when you want to relax.
177
This is a sports field.
178
A sports field is a large grassy area where you can play outdoors sports.
179
I say grassy but this one also has quite a few dandelions.
180
They're white now but a week ago they were all yellow.
181
I thought it was quite beautiful.
182
The types of things you would do on a sports field.
183
You might come here to play soccer or in your country you might come here to play football.
184
You might also come here to play other outdoor sports like American football or American rules football.
185
So this is a sports field.
186
It's a large outdoor grassy area where you can come to to play sports.
187
A hiking trail, or what we also call a hiking path,
188
is simply a trail or path that goes through nature.
189
If you want to enjoy the outdoors and you want it to be easy to walk,
190
you would find a hiking trail or hiking path.
191
And there's really only two things you can do.
192
You can come here to hike,
193
you can use a hiking trail to hike,
194
or you can use a hiking trail to walk your dog.
195
So this is a hiking trail.
196
This is a hiking path.
197
It is a beautiful trail or path that goes through nature.
198
An orchard is a place where you will find fruit trees.
199
It is a place where a farmer will grow fruit.
200
When you come to an orchard,
201
you sometimes see blossoms early in the season,
202
and later you will see fruit,
203
like apples and pears and peaches.
204
At least that's what they grow in our area.
205
So there are three things that a farmer can do in an orchard.
206
They can grow fruit, they can pick fruit,
207
and sometimes we use the verb to harvest.
208
They can go to the orchard to harvest fruit.
209
So an orchard is a place where a farmer grows fruit.
210
This is the town square in my local town.
211
A town square is an area where you're not allowed to drive your car.
212
It's only for pedestrians.
213
only allowed to walk in a town square,
214
at least in most towns and cities.
215
The town square is usually near the centre of town
216
or right in the centre of town and it's a great place to come to do a few things.
217
You might come here to eat your lunch if you're on a lunch break.
218
You might come here to people watch if you like watching people.
219
That's kind of a strange thing but people do do that.
220
Or you might simply come here to sit and read a book or to sit and relax.
221
So a town square, a place in the center of town or near the center of town where cars are not allowed.
222
I know there's cars going by on the street but they're not allowed right here,
223
where you're only allowed to walk and sit and enjoy yourself.
224
A backyard is a private grassy area behind a house.
225
It's the opposite of a front yard which is a grassy area in front of the house but it's not as private.
226
A backyard is a really nice place to relax.
227
It's your own little piece of the outdoors that you don't have to share with anyone else.
228
You might have a small shed,
229
you might have a patio,
230
you might have some patio chairs or some lawn chairs
231
and you might just sit out there on a nice day to enjoy yourself.
232
So a backyard, a nice private grassy area,
233
that's your own little piece of the outdoors.
234
A picnic area is a place where you can have a picnic.
235
Usually you'll find a picnic area in a forest or in a park
236
And it's a place that either has large trees or in this case, a pavilion.
237
This picnic area hasn't been here for very long,
238
so the trees aren't very big yet.
239
But a picnic area is a place with large trees or a pavilion or other places where you can sit.
240
You can even put a blanket on the grass and have a picnic there.
241
It's a really nice place to come in the summer to enjoy time with family and to have a picnic.
242
A garden is a place where people grow plants.
243
They grow things like flowers or vegetables.
244
Jen has several flower gardens because she grows lots of flowers for our local market.
245
Although when someone says garden,
246
I usually think of vegetable garden,
247
a place where someone might grow carrots or beans or tomatoes.
248
A garden is a great place to experience being outside.
249
In fact, they say working in the soil and growing plants is really good for your body because it makes you stronger,
250
but it's also good for your mind because it's relaxing.
251
So, a garden is a large outdoor area where people grow things like flowers,
252
or mostly I think they grow vegetables.
253
Well, hey, thank you so much for watching this English lesson about outdoor places.

  • Вопросительные предложения: Структуры, подобные "What can you do there?", добавляют интерактивности и вовлеченности в ваш разговор.

Shadowing?
