1
You can't master the American accent without mastering the dark L sound.
2
If you've never heard this term before, dark L, I'm not surprised.
3
If you look these words up in a dictionary, they'll all have the same phonetic symbol for L, but they're not the same sound.
4
These L's are light L's.
5
And these L's are dark L's.
6
They're made completely differently.
7
I'm Rachel, and I've been teaching the American accent for over 20 years.
8
I've never met a student who naturally had this dark L sound.
9
We've always had to work at it.
10
But when my students master this sound, it brings a truly natural and relaxed quality to their voices.
11
I've developed an extremely effective method for mastering the American accent.
12

14
What's the difference between these L's and these?
15
How do you know when to make an L a light L and when to make it a dark L?
16
It has to do with where it comes in the syllable.
17
If it comes before the vowel or diphthong sound, it's a light L.
18
When we write the word phonetically, you'll see either a space between syllables or mark like this or this.
19
So remember, you're looking at where the L comes in the syllable.
20
So if it's not at the beginning of the word or the end of the word,
21
you'll have to know how the word is broken up into syllables.
22
Long.
23
It's before the AW vowel, believe.
24
It's before the EE vowel, clean.
25
Before the EE vowel, these are all light L's.
26
Feel, it comes after the E.
27
Valley, it comes after the AA vowel.
28
Example, it comes after the schwa at the end of the word.
29
These are all dark L's.
30
The most important thing for you to know about the dark L sound is you don't lift your tongue tip up.
31
This is probably the exact opposite of what you've learned, but what you've learned is the light L.
32
Let's compare the light L to the dark L just by listening.
33
I'm going to go back and forth.
34
You can also look at the difference in the mouth position, but focus mainly on what you hear.
35
Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh.
36
Ll.
37
So for the dark L, the tongue tip is down, and the back part of the tongue pushes down and back a little bit,
38
narrowing the space here.
39
That makes this dark sound.
40
The pitch is low, the vibration is low here in my chest.
41
Try to imitate this sound right now with me.

133
It's hard to see because of the lips, but the tip of the tongue is still forward.
134
Notice that the lips are relaxed.
135
Let's compare the dark L to the mouth at rest.
136
The tongue tip is down, touching the back of the bottom front teeth,
137
and the back part of the tongue is stretching back a bit to make this part of the throat a little narrower.
138
That creates the dark sound.
139
Jaw doesn't drop much and the lips are relaxed.
140
That's an important note.
141
The lips are relaxed.
142
Some of my students, I'm thinking especially of my Vietnamese students, want to round the lips.
143
That totally changes the sound.
144
We don't want to do that.
145
E -mail, e -mail.
146
L, l, l.
147
Look what happens if I round my lips.
148
E -mail, e -mail.
149
We do not want lip rounding, we want relaxed lips.
150
Email.
151
L, L, L.
152
You know, this really feels more like a vowel than a consonant.
153
L, L, L.
154
I've seen so many students struggle because the habit to lift the tongue tip for the L is so strong.
155
Just practice the dark sound, feel the tongue tip touching the backs of the bottom front teeth.
156
Ll, ll.
157
Feel what you have to do to your throat, ll, to get that sound down into your chest.
158
Lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll part of the word comes at the end as the pitch falls down.
159
Feeel, feel, feel.
160
When you do it slowly, you can focus on how the tongue moves from the E position to the dark sound.
161
Feeel, by relaxing and then pressing down and back a little bit in the back.
162
Feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee feel.
163
Now a dark L, feel.
164
The sound and vibration really comes down lower to bring that dark sound into my chest.
165
Feel.
166
But there's no symbol for this.
167
In the dictionary, you'll see the word like with a light L with this symbol, and you'll see the word feel with the same symbol,
168
but we know that's not right.
169
I wish there was another symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet for the dark L that was used regularly.
170
I don't know why there isn't one.
171
Other dark L words?
172
Pool.
173
Smile.
174
The sound itself is tricky to get, but you can get it.
175
Expose yourself to the sound enough times and your body will pick it up.
176
That's exactly what we do in Rachel's English Academy me.
177
You get so much exposure and audio training that your body naturally picks it up and makes it a habit.
178
There's one other tricky thing to know about the dark L.
179
You already know tongue tip down.
180
Sounds more like a vowel than a consonant.
181
But what about when the next sound is a vowel?
182
Then after the dark sound, we do lift the tongue tip to separate it from the next vowel.
183
So, dark sound, lift the tongue tip, and connect into the next vowel.
184
Do not leave out the dark sound.
185
We know the word feel, L has a dark sound, but let's look at the word feeling.
186
The L comes after the E vowel in the first syllable, so it's still a dark L, but the next sound is a vowel,
187
the beginning of the ING ending.
188
I'm going to say it slowly.
189
Feeling.
190
Feeling.
191
I have the F, the E vowel, the dark sound.
192
Then I lift my tongue tip and go into the ING ending.
193
Feeling.
194
Feeling.
195
Feeling.
196
Let's look at another example.
197
He He fell in love.
198
Fell in.
199
F -ell -en.
200
F consonant, eh sound, dark sound, lifting the tongue tip quickly, and the word in.
201
Fell in.
202
Fell in.
203
He fell in love.
204
What does it sound like without the dark sound?
205
It sounds like this.
206
Fell in, fell in.
207
No dark sound.
208
Fell.
209
I want that dark sound.
210
It's so important in American English.
211
Fell, fell in, fell in.
212
He fell in love.
213
I'll say it again.
214
If it's a dark L, make that dark sound, L, even if you're linking into a vowel and need to lift your tongue tip.
215
In Rachel's English Academy, I have students really lock in the dark sound before moving on to this idea of linking into another word.
216
L is what's most important.
217
Let's work on that one more time.
218
Now I want you to be repeating out loud with me.
219
L. L.
220
Feel.
221
Feel.
222

Что такое техника Shadowing?
