Today I'm taking this ultra luxury Amazon River Cruise for the next 72 hours.

I'll show you exactly what it's like to live on board from the sweets

and fine dining to the ship's first class amenities.

We'll venture deep into the rainforest by high speed skiff encountering dolphins, sloths and lethal predators.

I'll fish for piranhas and track through dense leech infested jungle.

So with that let's pick up our story here in South America.

Well hello there and welcome back to the channel.

You join me here in a Ketos deep in the Peruvian Amazon and I'm joined by Dan.

Welcome.

Hi there.

How are we doing?

Yeah a bit warm.

It's a little bit different to what we expected isn't it?

It certainly is not Antarctica.

This trip was actually meant to be a cruise to the white continent

but that sailing was cancelled last minute due to bad weather

which left us with a week in South America and absolutely no plan.

So yesterday I did what anyone sensible would do.

I booked the last remaining suite on a brand new luxury Amazon cruise and flew to Peru.

We stayed here last night at the Hilton Doubletree

which also happens to be the meeting point for our expedition because today we're boarding Aquanera.

Down in the lobby the team greets us and helps us with our bags.

From there we're led outside to an awaiting minibus.

a short 10 minute transfer through the bustling streets of Iquitos.

To board our ship we head down to the banks of the Amazon River where we're met by tenders.

These are known as skiffs and will take us at high speed over to our ship.

builds as we glide across the water and within moments we spot aqua nearer.

In terms of size she measures 205 feet in length and carries just 40 guests across 20 cabins.

Embarkation is quick and seamless and we're soon introduced to the captain and the general manager.

The perspective we've boarded here on the port side of the ship and our suite is located just down the corridor.

Before we have a chance to check it out, we're notified of our imminent departure.

And just like that, the journey begins.

But where exactly are we going?

Over the next few days, we'll travel around 100 miles down the Amazon River, exploring its winding tributaries along the way.

Now to check out our room, the last remaining one I managed to grab yesterday.

Well, I'm very happy to welcome you to our new home.

Dad, what do you reckon?

It's fabulous.

It really is, isn't it?

These windows as well are, well, what are we going to see over the next few days?

Well, the view's amazing, so who knows?

First things first, we're going to take a proper look around our room, and then I think dinner is on the agenda.

Oh, yes, please.

This suite is far more spacious than I expected, coming in at 322 square feet.

You can have the beds arranged as twins like this, or combined to create a king-size setup.

Next to the bed sits your in-room phone, and strangely only a USB-A port.

There's a large chaise lounge and an armchair, perfect for sitting back and watching the Amazon drift by through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows.

There's a small dressing table boasting filtered water and welcome chocolates, along with a generously sized wardrobe.

Oh and Wi-Fi is included on board in form of Starlink.

The ensuite bathroom is spacious and modern, complete with a large vanity and a generous walk-in shower.

So now we're settled in, unpacked and very much on our way up the Amazon River, we need to think about dinner.

So dinner this evening is served upstairs in the dining room.

There isn't really a dress code per se, however I am going to get out of this active wear and into something a little smarter.

I was able to get a shirt ironed which is pretty good, super super quick and one thing to reference actually is that laundry is all included on board.

Now we head up to deck 2 where the dining room is located, we'll of course explore the rest of the ship in due course.

So the dining room you can choose between shared and private tables on a first-come first-served basis.

Shall we take a look at the menu?

It looks fab, though we have seen our first upcharge, but worry not there is inclusive house wine and that's also paired to each meal.

Service begins with freshly baked black olive bread and a delicate chicken consomme with vegetables.

Our mains arrive family style, grilled lamb loin, diced tomato risotto, pan seared Amazonian river fish and sautéed spinach.

It's all divine and a promising sign of what's to come.

Finally dessert arrives in the form of mancambo nougat and starfruit with Brazilian nut crumble.

Not something I'd usually order, but absolutely delicious.

Back at our suite it's been turned down beautifully and we even have a small gift waiting on our beds.

Well Dad, that's the end of day one.

It certainly is.

Yeah, although we have a pretty early start tomorrow I think don't we?

We do, 6 o'clock.

Yeah, dearie me.

Out on the skiffs.

Can't wait.

Looking at nature.

Well, I bet you best get your beauty sleep.

I need it.

Good morning.

It's time for our first expedition.

This morning includes wildlife spotting, but the real highlight for me will be fishing for piranhas.

The ship will continue on in our absence, but we'll wait for us further downstream, where we'll head back on board for a hearty breakfast.

We initially spot some river dolphins, gliding majestically through the morning haze.

Then as we move closer to the river bank we catch sight of our first sloths.

They're among the slowest animals on earth, spending most of their lives hanging quietly in the trees.

Now for a spot of fishing, for piranhas.

Our guide hooks strips of beef onto the lines as bait and we wait in anticipation.

After an obligatory look what I caught photo with dad, the piranha is thrown back into the Amazon.

Now to return to the Aquanera for breakfast.

Breakfast this morning is served outside on deck 3.

As you can see this deck is quite expansive, featuring a living room, swimming pool, games room and even a gym.

We'll explore all of it in just a moment but for now we'll focus on the aft sundeck.

Given our remote location it's impressive to have such a spread.

We've gone for a selection of fruit, sourdough, tapioca with cheese and a freshly made omelette.

I'm pleased to find the ship as a proper espresso machine, much needed after our early start.

Well I'm happy to report that breakfast was fabulous

but now it's time we take a proper look around the outside decks of this ship.

As we continue along the estuary, I see quite the array of bird life.

But what I'm really hoping to see is an Amazonian frog, quite a tall order when they're this tiny.

Now we begin to see the first signs of local life, marking our arrival at a small riverside village where we've been invited to take a look around.

In recent years Amazonian communities like this have become more open to visitors.

For villages this remote tourism provides an important source for income

while offering tourists like us a rare glimpse into their culture and way of life.

Take this home for example where lunch is being prepared consisting of plantain and piranha.

Back on board the skiff we're offered some refreshments as we make our way back towards Aquanera.

As we continue onwards and with our jungle track still coming later today, it's time to take a look around the inside of this ship.

We'll start here on deck 3 in the living room.

This is very much the social hub of the ship.

From daily briefings by the cruise director to cocktails at the bar,

live music and of Of course the occasional afternoon coffee.

Next up is the billiards room, featuring a full sized pool table.

Naturally some father son competition ensues.

Opposite the billiards room is the screening room, with comfortable seating and a large television for private viewings of up to 10 guests.

Now we're invited to a cooking demonstration of local food, some of which we'll actually be eating for lunch.

Let's take a seat at our usual table and see what else is on the menu.

To start we're served a heart of palm Chonta salad, something I've never tried before.

It's surprisingly delicate with a flavour a little like artichoke.

Now for a proper Peruvian feast, from stir-fried rice and beans, to plantain, and grilled tiger catfish, wrapped in a bajau leaf.

Quite the spread and absolutely divine.

To finish we both go for the three milk cake with roasted pineapple.

With lunch out of the way I must show you the gym back up on deck three.

There's a small free weights area, cardio machines and even a punching bag to work off some of that incredible food.

So there is actually one other area of the ship

that we've not had a chance to explore yet and

and have a 45 minute swedish massage the spa is located

on deck one just across from our cabin appointment times were pretty flexible

and this massage cost around a hundred dollars it's time to head out again

and this time with the promise of a jungle track.

I must admit I'm approaching it with a little trepidation.

My last jungle track in Malaysia a few years ago ended with leeches all up my legs.

We're going for a two-fold leech prevention method.

One these muck boots and two spraying a lot of deet.

We disembark the skiffs at what looks like a small opening in the jungle, making our way to a clearing where a local guide is waiting to lead us into the rainforest.

It's not long before we come across some activity, a tropical flat-backed millipede followed by a small tarantula.

We're also told there's a chance we may spot some primates deeper in the jungle.

And sure enough, look what we find in the canopy.

We make it back to the skiffs and I can confirm no leeches thank goodness.

As we glide back towards the ship we're handed ice cold beers, a fitting celebration.

As darkness begins to fall, we spot one final creature just beneath the water.

Back on board Aquanera, it's time to get changed for dinner.

However beforehand we're invited by the cruise director for drinks and live music.

It's also the perfect chance to sample a cocktail.

Now do bear in mind that these are not included in the cruise fare, which I do think is a bit of a shame.

So we've both opted for the fabulous local Peruvian speciality, the Pisco Sour.

For a change we've opted for a different table tonight.

It looks to be another extensive menu with a variety of sharing plates.

Yet again the food is presented family style from a creamed leek and potato gratin.

We finish proceedings with coconut tapioca and a mango sorbet which is phenomenal.

Back to our room we go where yet another gift awaits us on the bed.

As we glide slowly back into Iquitos, I reflect on our experience.

Aquanera has proven to be a fantastic way to explore the Amazon, combining incredible wildlife encounters with the comfort of a small luxury ship.

There are a few minor downsides, such as cocktails not being included, oh and the wine upsell at dinner, but overall it's been a remarkable experience.

This embarkation is efficient, and we walked past the incredible team of staff who made this experience just so special.
