1
Hey everybody!
2
My name is Andrew.
3
And my name is Morag.
4
And you are listening to Q-Lips.
5
Hey Morag.
6
Hey Andrew, how's it going?
7
I'm pretty good.
8
How about yourself?
9
I'm alright, but I have a new frustration.
10
A new frustration.
11
What is this frustration that's new to you?
12
Well, for the past couple months, there has been no one in the building I live in above me or below me.
13
So I am on the second floor and the third and first floors were vacant.
14
No one was living in them.
15
No one was living there.
16
That was very pleasant because you didn't have to worry about making noise.
17
And no one bothered you with noise.
18
Awesome.
19
Well, I have currently an infestation of French raver bros.
20
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
21
Okay, let's back it up.
22
Let's back it up.
23
That was an interesting sentence because this word infestation, we usually use this word to talk about bugs or rodents when they come into your house and they take over your house.
24
This is an infestation, but you don't have an infestation of cockroaches or ants or mice.
25
You have an infestation of French raver bros.
26
Yes, that is exactly correct.
27
That is how I think of them.
28
They're actually my downstairs neighbors, but they're just as annoying as an infestation of insects or rodents.
29
There are five of them in a three bedroom apartment.
30
Oh, no.
31
They seem to be 18, maybe 19.
32
And they constantly, constantly listen to bad dance music.
33
Bad dance music.
34
So you hear that bass drum just boom, boom, boom, boom.
35
Oh, drives me insane.
36
Yeah.
37
I'm curious, what is a raver bro?
38
Who is a raver bro?
39
Well, a bro is, that's a tough one.
40
A bro is a typically masculine guy, kind of like a jock.
41
A bro is, at least when you're calling somebody a bro in a negative way, it's just a guy that has a bad attitude that you don't like.
42
They're not a super terrible person, but they're still terrible enough, and you just wish that you didn't have to interact with them.
43
Mm-hmm.
44
And the raver part is they are very much into EDM, electronic dance music, and they seem to go dancing a lot.
45
And I saw them outside making friendship bracelets.
46
Cute.
47
Yeah.
48
And other things that you wear going dancing to electronic clubs and stuff.
49
So that's where that's coming from.
50
Well, Morag, it's very timely that these neighbors have moved into your building because the topic for today's Simplified Speech episode is dancing.
51
Something that your neighbors probably know a lot about.
52
Yeah, yeah, yeah, too bad.
53
Can't have them up here.
54
if you don't know simplified speech is our series where we have natural conversations at a slower than usual conversational speed and if you want to really maximize your time studying here today guys check out our website culips.com c-u-l-i-p-s.com to download the study guide for this episode okay morag let's get into it a little bit we'll transition away from the french raver bro neighbors yeah and we'll talk about us okay all right sounds good so dancing Dancing.
55
Do you like to dance, Andrew?
56
I do honestly enjoy dancing, but I'm a terrible dancer.
57
I have two left feet.
58
That's a great expression.
59
To have two left feet.
60
If somebody has two left feet, it means they're just bad at dancing.
61
I don't have two left feet, but I'm not a big fan of dancing in public.
62
In public.
63
So you're a private dancer.
64
Yeah.
65
It's fun to dance alone, like putting on music at home.
66
and if the mood strikes you, just, you know, dancing, jumping around, moving to the music.
67
But I'm not a big fan of dance moves, I guess.
68
Maybe I do have two left feet.
69
It's fun to move your body to music, but knowing how to dance is the other thing that's the real issue yeah i i recently became friends with a guy who's a really good dancer he went to a special high school one of those art focused high schools and studied dancing in high school and so he could do all sorts of dance styles but he was showing me some popping and locking and break dance moves and I gotta say I was a little jealous like it looks pretty cool yeah it definitely can but I think that guy is in the minority I think most people seem to not know how to do dance moves Mm-hmm.
70
Mm-hmm.
71
I think you can see that pretty well if you ever watch the dance floor at a wedding say.
72
Dance floors at a wedding in Canada?
73
It's one of the funniest things you'll ever see because I think Canadians were just not good dancers.
74
Of course I don't want to say everybody's a bad dancer in Canada but on the whole at least the weddings that my family members go to like my cousin's wedding that i went to a couple years ago seeing all of my extended family dance a little bit painful i have to be honest a little cringy very cringy maybe it's just watching older people dance though it's a I think as you get older, you lose some of the self-consciousness that would stop people from dancing.
75
You just don't care.
76
You just want to have fun.
77
So even if you look really silly, you'll still dance.
78
I'm okay with that.
79
It doesn't look good, but I think people should enjoy.
80
Yeah, I mean, it's a lot of fun.
81
You get to listen to music that you like.
82
Obviously, if you're dancing to it, the music is exciting to you.
83
And it's great exercise.
84
It's good to move around.
85
Very true.
86
It's easy to sit on the sidelines and laugh at people on the dance floor at a wedding.
87
But I mean, if you do that, you're kind of the loser in that situation.
88
It's true.
89
So that's why you go and you join and you laugh at yourself.
90
It's just more fun.
91
Now, another place you can go to dance is a nightclub, a dance club.
92
And I guess I used to do this occasionally when I was younger.
93
Haven't done it for a while now.
94
And I don't know if I would like to visit a nightclub now.
95
But yeah, I have in the past.
96
What about you, Borak?
97
Have you ever danced at a club, in the club?
98
Definitely have.
99
I have danced in the club, yep.
100
Also, when I was younger, that happened more often.
101
Although, funnily enough, I was at a club all the time last year because I was working at a club.
102
Right.
103
So I saw a lot of people dance, but I did not dance.
104
I liked it better that way.
105
Cultures around the world usually have a traditional dance style.
106
And Canada, our First Nations communities have, you know, lots of different styles of traditional dance.
107
And we both have Scottish heritage.
108
Families are from Scotland and Scotland has a really interesting style of traditional dance, Highland dance.
109
Have you ever tried to do Highlands dancing?
110
I didn't, although I have another friend who she and her sisters, all redheads.
111
Classic.
112
Yeah, their father is from Scotland and they all did Highland dancing.
113
It's really interesting.
114
It's very, very aerobic.
115
There's a lot of jumping.
116
Yeah, it's interesting to think about dance styles from around the world.
117
And I kind of wish that, you know, Canada, we need to make a new dance for everybody in Canada.
118
This would be really cool.
119
That would be nice, but...
120
I don't see it happening.
121
maybe we could adopt a dance that's popular like do you know andrew are there any dance crazes sweeping the nation oh that's a good question i don't know i think at least from a canadian perspective we'd have to look to one of our pop superstars like justin bieber or drake You know, Drake had that one dance music video that came out a couple years ago.
122
And there's some pretty funny dance moves in that video.
123
Kind of went viral for a little bit.
124
Maybe we should take those Drake kind of grandpa dance moves on as our national dance.
125
I think I could get behind that.
126
If everybody does it, it's okay, I guess.
127
It's cool again.
128
Yeah, perhaps.
129
I don't know.
130
But guys, if you haven't seen the music video for One Dance by Drake, you've been living under a rock, first of all.
131
But second of all, you should go to YouTube and check that video out to see the funny moves that we're talking about.
132
Check out a Canadian icon.
133
That's right.
134
