1
Hey everybody, my name is Andrew.
2
And my name is Morag.
3
And you are listening to Q-Lips.
4
Hey Morag.
5
Hey Andrew, how's it going?
6
I'm pretty good.
7
How about yourself?
8
I'm alright, but I have a new frustration.
9
A new frustration.
10
What is this frustration that's new to you?
11
Well, for the past couple months,
12
there has been no one in the building I live in above me or below me.
13
So I am on the second floor and the third and first floors were vacant.
14
No one was living in them.
15
No one was living there?
16
That was very pleasant because you didn't have to worry about making noise and no one bothered you with noise.
17
Awesome.
18
Well, I have currently an infestation of French raver bros.
19
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
20
Okay, let's back it up.
21
Let's back it up.
22
That was an interesting sentence because this word infestation,
23
we usually use this word to talk about bugs or rodents
24
when they come into your house and they take over your house.
25
This is an infestation, but you don't have an infestation of cockroaches or ants or mice.
26
You have an infestation of French raver bros.
27
Yes, that is exactly correct.
28
That is how I think of them.
29
They're actually my downstairs neighbors,
30
but they're just as annoying as an infestation of insects or rodents.
31
There are five of them in a three-bedroom apartment.
32
Oh, no. They seem to be 18, maybe?
33
19?
34
And they constantly, constantly listen to bad dance music.
35
Bad dance music.
36
So you hear that bass drum, just the boom, boom, boom, boom.
37
Oh, drives me insane.
38
Yeah.
39
I'm curious, what is a raver bro?
40
Who is a raver bro?
41
Well, a bro is, that's a tough one.
42
A bro is a typically masculine guy, kind of like a jock.
43
A bro is, at least when you're calling somebody a bro in a negative way, it's just a guy that has a bad attitude that you don't like.
44
They're not a super terrible person, but they're still terrible enough.
45
And you just wish that you didn't have to interact with them.
46
Mm hmm.
47
And the raver part is they are very much into EDM electronic dance music and they seem to go dancing a lot.
48
And I saw them outside making friendship bracelets.
49
Cute.
50
Yeah.
51
And other things that you wear going dancing to electronic clubs and stuff.
52
So that's where that's coming from.
53
Well, Morag, it's very timely that these neighbors have moved into your building
54
because the topic for today's Simplified Speech episode is dancing.
55
Something that your neighbors probably know a lot about.
56
Yeah, yeah, yeah, too bad.
57
Can't have them up here.
58
If you don't know,
59
Simplified Speech is our series where we have natural conversations at a slower than usual conversational speed.

62
Okay, Morag, let's get into it a little bit.
63
We'll transition away from the French raver bro neighbors.
64
And we'll talk about us, okay?
65
All right, sounds good.
66
So dancing Dancing Do you like to dance, Andrew?
67
I do honestly enjoy dancing But I'm a terrible dancer I have two left feet That's a great expression
68
To have two left feet If somebody has two left feet It means they're just bad at dancing
69
I don't have two left feet,
70
but I'm not a big fan of dancing in public.
71
In public, so you're a private dancer?
72
Yeah.
73
It's fun to dance alone, like putting on music at home,
74
and if the mood strikes you, just, you know, dancing, jumping around, moving to the music.
75
But I'm not a big fan of dance moves, I guess.
76
Maybe I do have two left feet.
77
It's fun to move your body to music, but knowing how to dance is the other thing that's the real issue.
78
Yeah.
79
I recently became friends with a guy who's a really good dancer.
80
He went to a special high school, one of those art-focused high schools, and studied dancing in high school.
81
Wow.
82
So he could do all sorts of dance styles, but he was showing me some popping and locking and breakdance moves.
83
And I got to say, I was a little jealous.
84
Like, it looked pretty cool.
85
Yeah, it definitely can.
86
But I think that guy is in the minority.
87
I think most people seem to not know how to do dance moves.
88
Mm-hmm.
89
I think you can see that pretty well if you ever watch the dance floor at a wedding, say.
90
Dance floors at a wedding in Canada.
91
It's one of the funniest things you'll ever see because I think Canadians were just not good dancers.
92
Of course, I don't want to say everybody's a bad dancer in Canada up
93
but on the whole at least the weddings
94
that my family members go to like my cousin's wedding
95
that i went to a couple years ago seeing all of
96
my extended family dance a little bit painful i have to
97
be honest a little cringy very cringy maybe it's just watching older people dance though I think as you get older,
98
you lose some of the self-consciousness that would stop people from dancing.
99
You just don't care.
100
You just want to have fun.
101
So even if you look really silly, you'll still dance.
102
I'm okay with that.
103
It doesn't look good, but I think people should enjoy.
104
Yeah, I mean, it's a lot of fun.
105
You get to listen to music that you like.
106
Obviously, if you're dancing to it, the music is exciting to you. And it's great exercise.
107
It's good to move around.
108
Very true.
109
It's easy to sit on the sidelines and laugh at people on the dance floor at a wedding.
110
But, I mean, if you do that, you're kind of the loser in that situation.
111
It's true.
112
So that's why you go and you join and you laugh at yourself.
113
It's just more fun.
114
Now, another place you can go to dance is a nightclub, a dance club.
115
And I guess I used to do this occasionally when I was younger.
116
Haven't done it for a while now.
117
And I don't know if I would like to visit a nightclub now.
118
But yeah, I have in the past.
119
What about you, Borak?
120
Have you ever danced at a club, in the club?
121
Definitely have.
122
I have danced in the club, yep.
123
Also, when I was younger, that happened more often.
124
Although, funnily enough, I was at a club all the time last year because I was working at a club.
125
Right.
126
So I saw a lot of people dance, but I did not dance.
127
I liked it better that way.
128
Cultures around the world usually have a traditional dance style.
129
In Canada, our First Nations communities have, you know, lots of different styles of traditional dance.
130
And we both have Scottish heritage.
131
Families are from Scotland.
132
And Scotland has a really interesting style of traditional dance, Highland dance.
133
Have you ever tried to do Highlands dancing?
134
I didn't, although I have another friend who she and her sisters, all redheads.
135
Classic.
136
Yeah, their father is from Scotland and they all did Highland dancing.
137
It's really interesting.
138
It's very, very aerobic.
139
There's a lot of jumping.
140
It's interesting to think about dance styles from around the world.
141
And I kind of wish that Canada, we need to make a new dance for everybody in Canada.
142
This would be really cool.
143
That would be nice, but...
144
I don't see it happening.
145
Maybe we could adopt a dance that's popular.
146
Do you know, Andrew, are there any dance crazes sweeping the nation?
147
Ooh, that's a good question.
148
I don't know.
149
I think, at least from a Canadian perspective, we'd have to look to one of our pop superstars, like Justin Bieber or Drake.
150
You know, Drake had that one dance music video that came out a couple years ago.
151
And there's some pretty funny dance moves in that video.
152
Kind of went viral for a little bit.
153
Maybe we should take those Drake kind of grandpa dance moves on as our national dance.
154
I think I could get behind that.
155
If everybody does it, it's okay, I guess.
156
It's cool again.
157
Yeah, perhaps.
158
I don't know.
159
But guys, if you haven't seen the music video for One Dance by Drake, you've been living under a rock, first of all.
160
But second of all, you should go to YouTube and check
161
that video out to see the funny moves that we're talking about.
162
Check out a Canadian icon.
163
That's right.
164

  • Raver bro -
  • Bad dance music -
  • Boom, boom, boom -
  • Friendship bracelets -
  • Electronic dance music (EDM) -

Shadowing?
