1
I've been thinking a lot lately about the frequency illusion.
2
This is probably something you've experienced before.
3
It's the phenomenon where you learn something new
4
and then all of a sudden you start seeing it everywhere in the world around you.
5
It's a form of selective attention.
6
Once something's on your mind, you're much more likely to notice it.
7
You might have heard it described as the red car theory because the classic example is, imagine you decide to buy a red car,
8
all of a sudden you start seeing red cars on the road everywhere.
9
It's not that there are actually more red cars, though it might feel that way, it's that you're more likely to notice them.
10
People sometimes point to this idea in the self-development space as evidence
11
that you can train your attention toward the things that you desire to encounter them more frequently.
12
you're focused on seeing opportunities for example you're more likely to notice them when they appear.
13
An example for me would be learning to forage for mushrooms which I realize is kind of a dorky hobby.
14
Before that was something that I was thinking about and putting effort into, I would go hiking or go camping and be out in the woods
15
and I would see mushrooms but they would barely register in the background.
16
I would notice it walk away and it wouldn't connect to anything else, and so I would almost immediately forget it.
17
The more I learned about mushrooms, the easier they were to find.
18
My eyes got more practiced and I started recognizing patterns around
19
when and where certain mushrooms appeared and which ones I often found together.
20
I've wondered how many times I've walked right past something
21
that I'd be excited to find today simply because I didn't yet know what I was looking at.
22
By refocusing your attention, you're not literally changing the world around you, but you are changing your perception.
23
And I think you could argue that distinction doesn't really matter.
24
I think there's definitely value to that, but I've been thinking about it a little bit further
25
and thinking about the way that we learn and the way
26
that we perceive depth and detail in the world around us
27
and how that can lead to just a richer experience in life.
28
When someone's an expert in something, they perceive layers of detail and meaning that other people don't notice.
29
For example, a musician can hear harmony and chord progressions where where someone else simply hears a song.
30
We are experiencing the same stimulus, but the knowledge allows one of us to hear more of it.
31
When we don't know what to look for, a lot of detail passes below our perception and gets missed.
32
I've been thinking about that especially as it relates to the natural world and getting to know the woods here.
33
Nature is full of relationships between organisms, seasons, weather, geography, and more.
34
A forest like this one has layers of information to reveal, and a lot of it's still invisible to me.
35
Take this thought experiment for example.
36
Imagine two people standing right here at this creek bed.
37
They're looking at exactly the same place, but they're not seeing the same thing.
38
A deer hunter notices tracks, browse lines, and the trails animals use through the woods.
39
A bird watcher notices nesting habitat and can guess the species that are likely to be nearby.
40
So for people like this, because they've developed this level of knowledge, they notice things others don't see and they can read meaning from it.
41
And I think that makes the world a much more interesting place.
42
As we gain experience, new observations stop feeling like isolated pieces of information and begin connecting to things we've already learned,
43
including personal experiences and memories.
44
A single mushroom isn't just a mushroom anymore.
45
It tells you something about the trees nearby, the weather, the season, and the ecology of the forest.
46
The more fluent and knowledgeable you become in a domain the more detail and depth you can notice
47
for example I think it would be really cool to come out in the woods
48
and be able to identify bird species around me just by listening to song
49
because it would add a whole new layer of information
50
and honestly I just think that's really interesting the world is so interesting
51
and rich with so much color and depth and most of it passes beyond our perception.
52
We just can't.
53
There's a deer over there.
54
It feels a little bittersweet to think about how many beautiful or fascinating details I must be overlooking all the time.
55
I know there's so much I'll probably never see or understand, but at the same time it's encouraging to think that there's always more out there to discover.
56
By being more intentional about what I give my attention to and by leaning into curiosity, I find my life feels fuller.
57
There's a lot to uncover by taking a closer look at the ordinary things around us.
58
On this channel, I explore the natural world and reflect on what it teaches us about being human.
59
If that interests you, I hope you'll subscribe and I'll see you in the next one.
