The older I get, the more I understand my parents.

I'm not a parent myself,

but is it just me or are all of the little things parents used to say and do starting to make sense?

Like, turn your socks right side out before you put them in the laundry.

I used to think to myself, why does that matter?

You just flip it right side out once it's done drying

and washing and now that I'm older and washing laundry myself I'm realizing

that it's so the exterior part that touches your shoes gets thoroughly washed clean

and it's such a small thing but I think that's what's interesting about growing up

when you're a child you experience the care without really understanding the thought behind

it you only see the action not the reason

Or another example is the way they show love, like spending forever deseeding your pomegranate.

I never really thought about how much time it took.

I only knew about eating a bowl of perfectly peeled pomegranate seeds that would appear in front of me.

And now looking back, I realized there were probably so many things my parents did

that I never considered to be acts of love because they were just part of my everyday life.

Some other examples of my parents showing love or care would sound something like bring a jacket when you go out, don't stay up too late,

text me when you get there, or eat something before you leave.

Growing up, some of it sounded like nagging.

I would brush it off like it was just another unnecessary comment, but it's much more than that.

Now that I'm more aware and older and more mature,

I'm starting to see the invisible effort behind the things I once took for granted

and as a child I only saw the bowl of pomegranate seeds

but now I see the hands

that prepared them love doesn't always announce itself as love it's usually hidden inside the most ordinary things repeated

so many times

that you stop noticing them growing older is realizing it was never just about the pomegranate seeds

or the socks it was love.
