1
You need to improve your English speaking, but how can you do that without someone to speak to?
2
This is one of the most common questions I get when it comes to learning English and improving.
3
I think speaking is an area where we all need a bit more practice, but it's very difficult to get practice with other people.
4
So first of all, getting a teacher can be expensive.
5
It's difficult to find someone to talk with and pay them because it takes a lot of money.
6
Of course, I know that it is expensive.
7
It can be for sure.
8
And the other methods like language partners can be challenging.
9
I mean, to find a language partner might take a bit more work.
10
You might have to do more research, make those connections, make a good introduction and all this kind of stuff that you don't have to do when you're paying a teacher.
11
And of course, you may have to also spend time in your own language.
12
So most situations with language exchange partners might be 50 % in English and 50 % in your native language.
13
So therefore you're not really making the most of your time
14
because you have to use your own language quite a lot as well.
15
And of course it may just be quite hard to find
16
people in your area where you live it may be quite difficult to connect with people who speak English
17
and for all of these reasons and more speaking can be such a hard skill to practice.
18
So in today's episode I want to share something
19
that I've been practicing myself and this is a method to improve your speaking
20
and get some speaking practice all on your own.
21
Of course it's not generally going to be as good as with another person
22
if you're practicing with someone else you're getting live feedback you're getting listening practice as well
23
and there's a lot more
24
that goes into it i think we can all agree there's
25
a lot more in a conversation than just speaking there's also gestures
26
and facial expressions and all these different feelings and emotions that you don't get when you're speaking on your own.
27
Having said that, a huge amount of improvement can be seen
28
when you practice alone and that's exactly what I want to talk about today.
29
So recently I've been working on a website just for my own personal use to practice speaking in different languages
30
and I'm going to share that with you today.
31
This is one of the benefits of using AI these days is that you can code your own web page very easily.
32
And if you kind of use it well, this can be really, really effective to do many different things.
33
I think there are many things that you can do on a website
34
that would be much harder to do in a notebook or in a, you know, Google document or Word document, something like that.
35
So I'm going to show you what I made today
36
and I really hope it's going to be useful for you as well.
37
Maybe it will spark some ideas for you.
38
So just to give a bit of an overview, this is kind of the website I made for myself.
39
I am using it to practice my Chinese and my Japanese speaking
40
and it's been working so well for me
41
that I decided to just tweak it a little bit tweak means make a small change
42
and also make an English version just to show you as well.
43
To be honest, I haven't made this public yet.
44
Maybe I will when I edit the podcast.
45
I haven't decided yet.
46
I mean, if you would like to use this yourself, let me know.
47
You know, maybe I can add it to my website, but you have to let me know what you think about it. But basically,
48
I made this with claude claude is a one of the big ai kind of providers these days the llms
49
and claude is quite good at coding so it you may think you know
50
if you're not familiar with ai you may think oh it's
51
not for me it's way too difficult i could never make
52
a website this really just took i would say five messages to do.
53
So I wrote my idea to Claude.
54
I said, basically, I have an idea.
55
I want to make a website where I can practice my language speaking on my own.
56
And I said exactly what I want it to have.
57
I want it to have different question prompts.
58
So a prompt is something that kind of gives you an idea of what to speak about.
59
And each day there will be a new prompt to talk about
60
and it will challenge me to talk for you know maybe 10 minutes
61
or 20 minutes on a certain topic
62
and there's a recording button i also asked for an archive
63
so once i have recorded i can see history and archive of all of my previous
64
recordings there and also i want to have a streak system
65
so it will count how many days in a row i study so having
66
that little streak in there will encourage me to do it
67
every day i also said i don't think i have time on the weekend
68
so only do it monday to friday that's what i decided for myself
69
so it counts the streak from monday to friday
70
and that's what i started with that it took about three messages to get
71
that right you know he he made a website for me you know i say he it's an ai
72
but you know in my mind it's a man for some reason
73
but yeah claude made a website for me
74
and it was pretty good i sent another message just to
75
tweak some things can you make this look different can you
76
change this part about it oh this isn't working properly
77
and yeah just a couple messages i ended up with this
78
i'm showing it on the screen on the video version today
79
but if you don't want to look that's fine if you're listening
80
or you're driving that's totally fine it's not a big problem
81
if you can't see and then i had one more idea the next day
82
which was to add a vocabulary element too
83
so down below the recording i have a section called words to practice
84
so this is where i learn a new word from somewhere i'll add it to this list
85
and i have the idea to practice
86
so i've added a few words here like astounded flabbergasted there's some example words
87
that i can practice here and i can tick them off once i have practiced them
88
so that's a nice way for me to keep track of these words
89
and of course the more you practice
90
and the more you use them the easier they will be to remember in a real conversation
91
so yeah maybe i will just give you an example now
92
i thought for today we can do a few examples of this
93
and i want to show you
94
and demonstrate to you how this could work for you okay
95
so let's have a go at this first one here
96
and this first question says talk for 10 minutes on one
97
question what makes a good life now i'm going to keep
98
an eye on my vocab list at the bottom here uh what you know
99
so before i answer So I'm going to try and think what words might be useful.
100
I might come up with for, pray to, and groggy.
101
I'm going to try and use these words.
102
So, okay, what makes a good life?
103
Let me talk.
104
I'm not going to talk for 10 minutes, probably, but let me just have a go.
105
Give you an example so in my opinion there are many things
106
that can contribute to a good life i believe
107
that a good life is often one that has uh
108
that is focused on health so
109
if you look after your body then you will have a better life
110
if you feel good and you look good especially feel is more important then I believe you can have a good life.
111
If you exercise and you walk every day,
112
if you avoid junk food and you eat relatively healthily,
113
I believe these things can have a huge impact on your life.
114
I also think similarly, sleep has a big impact as well.
115
Just the quality of your sleep really affects how you feel the next day.
116
If you don't have a good night's sleep you will wake up feeling very groggy.
117
Groggy is that grumpy feeling in the morning when you're sleepy.
118
If you can get your sleep to a healthy level you will wake up feeling good.
119
Actually I forgot to start recording so let me record here.
120
It's recording me now but yeah you will wake up feeling good and not groggy if you get a good night's sleep.
121
And I just know from personal experience, if I don't sleep well,
122
I feel miserable for the whole day.
123
So that definitely has a huge impact on a good life.
124
I also think two big things that come to mind are hobbies and social connection.
125
So to tackle the first one, if you don't have any hobbies,
126
I don't see how you could live a meaningful, fulfilled life.
127
Just doing things that you love that make you happy every day, to me, that plays a huge role in my enjoyment of life.
128
And I would say.. if I ever feel sad, it might be because I don't have enough hobbies.
129
So that could be one possible reason for not having a good life.
130
And as I said, loneliness could be another one.
131
So social connection is hugely important.
132
If you are surrounded by friends and family, this can make you feel happy and satisfied.
133
However, if you are isolated, you don't have good friends
134
and you spend a lot of time on your own i
135
think over time this can have a bad effect on you
136
and people who fall prey to this kind of temptation of
137
spending time alone will end up being less happy right
138
so fall prey to something is another one of my new words i wanted to practice
139
but to fall prey to is to be a victim to something to accidentally have something happen
140
so i fell prey to
141
not making friends it's very easy not to make friends
142
and live a life alone but this is something we should avoid
143
and not let that not let that problem overtake us
144
so there we go there was my answer
145
if i stop recording here i can i can save it
146
and it takes a second yeah then it says saved nice work today and then if I go to my archive page
147
I can see the question and my answer is here
148
and the date right so this also allows me to go back through time
149
and hopefully see my improvements
150
so let's imagine I'm doing this for one year i can listen to my answer today
151
and to my answer one year ago and hopefully i can hear
152
that difference i can see or hear the improvements in my speaking
153
and i think
154
that will be really motivating once you start to hear your
155
confidence growing i've only been doing this for a few days myself
156
so i haven't got to that point yet
157
but i really hope that's going to be a factor in the future as well.
158
And by the way, if you stick around until the end of this episode, I will tell you how you can make your own website like this for yourself.
159
I'll explain more about that at the end.
160
And if some of you may already be quite familiar with how to use AI and technical stuff like this, but maybe some of you are not.
161
So I'll try to explain it at the end of this episode.
162
And just for this example, I've also allowed myself to go through different days.
163
So if we go through to tomorrow we can have a look at tomorrow's prompt here so
164
if i wake up tomorrow this would be what it said
165
describe your ideal day what time do you wake up where do you go what makes it enjoyable hmm
166
so this one is a little bit easier than before perhaps but describe your ideal day.
167
I might want to use come up with for this one and astounded.
168
So let's use these two in this answer.
169
So start recording here.
170
So while thinking about what my perfect day would look like, quite a few things are coming to me.
171
It's difficult to come up with, that means think about a perfect day because I have
172
so many different ideas in my mind of what could contribute to
173
that perfect day but to get more specific I think I would wake up quite early
174
because recently I have found that you know waking up early makes my day feel longer and therefore I can extract,
175
take more happiness out of my day.
176
In fact when I first started waking up early I was astounded by just how much I could achieve in the day.
177
Astounded means surprised.
178
I was really astounded by just how much I accomplished in one day
179
and I realized before I was just sleeping too much
180
and therefore I didn't have enough time to do everything I wanted to do
181
so I would definitely wake up early
182
and in regards to where I would go I might like
183
to explore some new area for me seeing something different having
184
a new environment is a big part in the enjoyment of
185
my day it plays a big role in how much I enjoy the day
186
so I probably would just pick somewhere on the map where I haven't explored before and see what it's like.
187
It's a bit of a mystery of course because it might be terrible
188
and boring and ugly but it also might be beautiful and peaceful. and exciting.
189
So I don't know what I'm expecting, but I think the surprise is part of the excitement to me.
190
And yeah, what makes it enjoyable?
191
Well, I kind of already explained that the unknown aspect of where I'm going is what makes it enjoyable.
192
But I think the key thing is that I'm doing something new and I'm doing it with people I like.
193
I know that sounds simple, but I think at the end of the day
194
if you're surrounded by friends
195
that you enjoy spending time with you will have a good day
196
so yeah that could be my answer there stop recording save recording
197
if we go back to the archive now you will see Thursday
198
and Friday both of these recordings are archived and recorded there
199
and I don't know about you
200
but for me recording my practice really makes a big difference
201
so the reason why I made this website is
202
because I was just kind of talking to myself before I would sit down on my at my desk
203
and I would look at some words I want to practice
204
or maybe some grammar and I would just talk I would talk on my own
205
and there would be no way to record it
206
and even though this might be quite useful I just found
207
it it felt very pointless it felt very silly I'm just talking to myself
208
and there's no way to show how I've spent my time I don't know
209
if you agree with me
210
but for some reason recording my practice in like this kind
211
of an archive of everything I do how much time I'm spending on it this really helps motivate me
212
because i can see how much work i've put into it
213
and it's also nice to track each day as well
214
so there's something about
215
that for me that's just recording what i'm doing is more motivating maybe you feel the same
216
and if so
217
if you are like me maybe you can think about other ways you can record what you do i think
218
when it comes to language study i tend to record everything
219
so I've got data on everything I do and
220
that makes it more motivating for me to continue
221
but yeah maybe that's just me but I wonder if
222
if other people are the same as well let me know
223
if you are let's go to Saturday now well actually no this will go ahead so this might be Monday now Anyway,
224
it doesn't really matter.
225
But the next day says, tell the story of a memorable trip.
226
What happened?
227
Why do you still remember it?
228
And what would you do differently now?
229
By the way, I should say, all of these questions, they're not my questions.
230
I just asked Claude to give a list of questions.
231
I think I described what kind of questions to use, like kind of just give everyday questions
232
that would be useful in a prompt not too easy not too difficult
233
and this is these are the questions
234
that claude came up with all on its own i didn't give any really ideas
235
or examples so it's quite impressive that it's got a huge list of questions
236
and i suppose eventually i'm going to finish all of them
237
and at that point i can just give another message to Claude and ask for some more questions, maybe 100 more questions for the next 100 days.
238
That should take a few seconds, right?
239
So yeah, to me, this is a very effective way to use AI.
240
Let's continue until I've finished all of my new words.
241
So a memorable trip, I want to use flabbergasted and irate.
242
These are both adjectives here.
243
Okay, start recording.
244
today i want to talk about a memorable trip
245
that i have taken and the first one
246
that comes to my mind is one of my probably my most recent trip besides going back to the uk
247
and that was my trip to south korea now the reason this was memorable for me is
248
because i embarked on a big adventure my goal was to
249
cycle from Seoul in the north to Busan in the south
250
and I can cut to the end of the story now
251
I was successful I successfully crossed the entire country by bicycle
252
and of course it goes without saying
253
that this was a memorable trip what happened on the trip
254
you might be wondering well it's hard to summarize in just a few
255
sentences because so many things happened it was a huge adventure
256
but basically I woke up every day and I got on my bike
257
and I cycled according to the plan
258
that I had made before the plan I had the route on my phone
259
and there were a few things
260
that surprised me about South Korea i think one thing where
261
i felt kind of flabbergasted is just how empty the country
262
seemed i flabbergasted it's a very funny word to me
263
but it kind of just means yeah really surprised or shocked
264
or amazed i flabbergasted whoa that's incredible um it's quite strong word
265
so maybe it's not really appropriate here
266
but i was really flabbergasted i was like speechless with shock almost
267
so yeah maybe it's too strong for this example but anyway I want to talk about
268
when I think of South Korea I think of you know
269
Seoul a big city like many Asian countries I think of like a big population like you might in China
270
or Japan you know lots of people in in one place
271
but what really surprised me was just how rural the country
272
seemed you know as I cycled through I didn't see
273
that many towns or cities there was so much countryside
274
so many mountains and forests and that was a big shock to me
275
and the reason why I remember it now is firstly
276
because it was still quite a recent trip
277
so it's still somewhat fresh in my mind but I think also
278
because it was so different it's not every day you cycle across a whole country
279
and for that reason it's something that I doubt I will be forgetting very soon.
280
What would I do differently now, you ask?
281
That's a good question.
282
What would I do differently now?
283
Let me have a think about it.
284
I would say one area that I wasn't totally prepared for was the food aspect.
285
There were some days where it was very difficult to find food again
286
because it was so rural and I found myself getting more
287
and more grumpy because as I ran out of food I would get angry
288
and I'd have to work really hard and say something went wrong I would just get really irate.
289
Irate means angry by the way.
290
I would get really irate.
291
So say I was cycling, I got off my bike and then the pedal hit my shin, it hit my leg and it really hurt.
292
If I felt normal, if I had breakfast and I had lunch, I wasn't hungry, I would be like, ouch, that hurts, that's painful.
293
But because I was so hungry, I got really irate and I got really angry because not only was I in pain,
294
but I was also very hungry as well
295
and i think i know you can relate to
296
that feeling right it's a horrible feeling so
297
if i could go back in time i would probably prepare some more food to bring
298
and that would allow me to keep going despite uh despite the hunger
299
and also also some more water bottles as well okay you know how it works now as you can see
300
if you do it every day you will have that streak here.
301
I did notice that it has included Saturday, which I think is something I would need to fix on my website
302
because I decided I don't want to study on Saturday.
303
So that's a problem, but it's only an example today, isn't it?
304
And then once again on the archive page, I now have some nice history here that I can compare to.
305
But yeah, I think that's basically it.
306
Oh, Also, I had ponder.
307
So, OK, let me do 30 seconds more.
308
Talk about a mistake that you made. So ponder.
309
Hmm.
310
OK, let me ponder this question for a while.
311
Hmm.
312
Ponder means think about, think about something.
313
If I really ponder on this question, I might talk about the time where I booked,
314
I missed my flight and I had to pay for a new flight home
315
that was a very big mistake that I won't be making again
316
if you want to hear more mistakes
317
that I've made recently I actually did record a full private podcast all about this last week
318
so you can hear my episode on mistakes on levelupenglish .school
319
but yeah anyway that's basically it
320
so it's quite a simple episode today I wanted to showcase my idea to practice your speaking
321
and let me know what you think.
322
this is the part now where I can kind of tell you how you can make this yourself
323
so as I said I used Claude sometimes I do pay for Claude you can pay monthly
324
or annually and I do find it is useful
325
if you're building a big website
326
if you're just building one web page like this I think
327
you can use it for free probably at the moment
328
and it might you know you might use up your usage message temporarily
329
but then if you wait six hours you can send another message and try again
330
and yeah I think you can probably make it for free again
331
if you do it correctly it might just take five messages to get the final code
332
so it will make a code for you
333
that you can use on a website
334
and this code can be opened on your computer
335
but i think one thing we want to do is make sure you can save your data
336
so my website is also saving my vocabulary it's also saving my streak
337
and more importantly my audio files of course these audio files take up space
338
so because of that i've hosted it on my website
339
but what some of you may not know is you can get a free hosting platform so
340
if it's only for personal use there are some places where
341
you can make a website maybe you can just type in something like make website for free online
342
and you can sign up and you don't have to pay for any host
343
or any domain name you don't need to have you know michael .com for example i don't have
344
that on mine it's just a random
345
a few letters and numbers
346
but yeah i think there are some services where you can do it for free
347
and then you can host it on their website and
348
if you're not using too much memory you should be able
349
to do it for free on some of them i mean this is also another thing
350
that honestly you could ask ai as well
351
so once you've made the website you could say now can
352
you tell me can you explain very very simply how can i host this website
353
so i can use it for personal use i think you would have to make it clear
354
that i don't want to share it with anyone i don't
355
need it to be public i i'm going to be the only user
356
but i need the data to be saved every time i visit
357
so that's what you need to say and yeah
358
if you do get confused i think ai should be able to help with
359
that as well
360
so I know some of you I'm sure you can make
361
a website many of you can't that's why I'm trying to
362
explain it in a way to those of you who who don't know how really
363
but I think a lot of you would be surprised just how easy this would be
364
so for me I already have a website host
365
that I pay for of course because I host Level Up English my main website
366
so I'm just kind of using a different website on the same host for this kind of personal private one
367
and that works well for me but yeah i haven't paid anything to make this
368
and i do think there are ways we could improve it too i always think
369
when it comes to language learning there's almost like a balance
370
between how much time you want to spend on setting up your learning materials
371
and how much time you should actually spend learning.
372
Now, you could spend a long time buying a comfortable chair, a desk, getting loads of notebooks, making the perfect study environment.
373
But of course, in that time, you're not studying at all.
374
It's kind of wasting time.
375
So there's definitely a balance here.
376
You want to have something that you can use, but don't fall into the trap or don't fall prey to wasting time on things
377
that aren't so important but if i'm looking at this website maybe one area
378
that could be added i think could be quite fun
379
and motivating is a bit of uh what could we say it's kind of like gamification
380
or some more statistics that are recorded like imagine a thing at the top
381
that said you know this year you have spoken english for five hours
382
and you oh that's nice and maybe there's a goal
383
that says you know speak for 50 hours in one year that's one hour a week roughly
384
so that would be a good goal
385
and then you can see your progress as you work towards
386
that goal that could be a really fun addition to motivate you to work a bit harder
387
and you know what just came to my mind what would be really fun is
388
if you could publish this website and share it with friends.
389
That would be amazing, right?
390
Imagine you could do this
391
and you can compete with your friends to see who has done the most speaking practice in the week.
392
Maybe that's a bit too complicated
393
but I think there are many ways you could improve it
394
with just a few messages you can make a website that works for you.
395
But I guess the final thing I'll say is it doesn't have to be this technical.
396
If some of you are very kind of anti -AI
397
or you're just not good with this stuff at all then of course you can do it manually.
398
What I used to do is just record on my phone
399
and store all of my recordings in a folder on my computer
400
that was kind of the basic way this way is just a bit more streamlined
401
which means kind of faster and tidier basically there are different ways you could do it
402
but for those who don't know i just wanted to share
403
that method today of using ai to benefit your own learning
404
but yeah i think i'll end my rant there about ai i hope you found that useful
405
and i do want to share one thank you now to
406
olive in the uk i wonder where olive is i wonder where you're
407
when you wait where are you writing from olive
408
but anyway olive left a lovely review on apple podcasts
409
and it reads i listen to this podcast regularly on my way to the office it helps a lot
410
and that would be good to do more episodes such as 388
411
or UK slang
412
so I can use it in daily life in the UK
413
thanks well thank you very much I'm glad to hear
414
that you like it and it's a nice uh addition on your commute
415
so hello Olive on your commute but yeah I'm really glad
416
that you find it useful and I like the suggestion about UK slang
417
i will consider that for a future episode i'll write it down
418
and see what i can do soon
419
so thank you very much for your review as well
420
and i also have a quote here from brian tracy
421
and this is one of the very worst uses of time is to do something very well
422
that need not be done at all this is quite a cool one
423
so it's such a waste of time to be really good at something
424
that doesn't need to be done what a waste that is
425
so yeah that could be relevant to today i think don't waste all your time on stuff
426
that isn't actually helping you maybe for some of you making this website would be one of them anyway well
427
if you want to hear more from me this week i'm
428
going to be doing more speaking prompts on the private podcast i'm going to be talking about some random questions
429
and answering them myself and hopefully this will give you some ideas on questions
430
that you could answer in your own english speaking practice as well
431
of course you can always submit your practice on the website too
432
if you want to get feedback from me so once again
433
if you want to hear the private podcast go to levelupenglish .school click join become a member
434
and you can hear hundreds of episodes there that you have never heard before.

Về Bài Học Này

Bạn đang luyện tập phát âm tiếng Anh với video "How to Improve Your English Speaking (Alone!)" bằng phương pháp Shadowing — kỹ thuật được Dr. Alexander Arguelles phổ biến rộng rãi.
