Hoặc bạn có thể nói rằng...
12
Sup.

13
which is obviously short for What's up?
rõ ràng là viết tắt của câu "What's up?"
14
Again, those are very, very informal, so I wouldn't recommend using them at work or with a professor.
Một lần nữa, những cách nói này rất không trang trọng, nên tôi không khuyên bạn dùng chúng ở nơi làm việc hoặc khi nói chuyện với giáo sư.
15
On the more formal side of things, we have phrases like Good morning.
Về phía trang trọng hơn, chúng ta có những cụm từ như Chào buổi sáng.
16
Good afternoon.
Chào buổi chiều.
17
or "Good evening." Okay, those are standard phrases.
18
Native speakers don't Always use them in everyday casual conversation.
19
especially good evening, good afternoon, those are a bit more formal but we're totally fine to use in any situation.
20
So those are the basic greetings.
21
We have an English.
22
Now obviously if you meet somebody, you want to ask them what their name is.
23
and be very careful.
24
In English, we don't say How are you called?
25
How are you called?
26
That's completely...
27
Wrong.
28
I know in a lot of languages that's how you would create this Sentence is how you would structure it.
29
But in English we say "What is your name?" What is your name?
30
or if we're putting it together when we speak quickly we would say What's your name?
31
"What's your name?" The only correct response would be: My name is.
32
Or again, if we shorten it, my names.
33
For example, my name's Michael.
34
What's your name?
35
Now, if you have a nickname, A nickname is another name that is not your official name, But...
36
it's what you like to be called You can say: My name's Michael.
37
but I go by Mike For example, I go by Mike.
38
Or you could say, my name is Michael.
39
But I prefer to be called Mike.
40
I prefer to be called Mike. So, You've introduced yourself.
41
you've asked the other person what their name is, You can also say: "Pleasure to meet you !" Pleasure to meet you.
42
Nice to meet you.
43
Great to meet you.
44
And if you want to be really formal, you could say, "It's an honor." to meet you.

I can't really think of too many situations when you would use this Maybe if you met the president or somebody influential,
46
you could say it's an honor or a privilege.
47
to meet you.
48
Thank you.
49
And if you want to be really, really polite, If somebody says this to you, They say, It's a pleasure to meet you.
50
You could say, The pleasure is mine.
51
Again, that's really formal.
52
It's not super common, but it's Very diplomatic.
53
as we would say.
54
Of course, you can ask the question, where are you from?
55
Or where are you originally? from.
56
to which the answer is obviously I'm from this city or this country, I'm originally from this city, or this country.
57
but you could also answer in a bit more detail you could say: I was born in or I'm from,
58
I'm originally from, such and such city, But I grew up in...
59
a different place.
60
or I lived for several years in Another place.
61
And I have been living here four three months, six months, one year, whatever.
62
Now, I have been living here is the present Perfect.
63
Continuous.
64
Okay.
65
I have been living here.
66
It means you moved in the past.
67
but you are still living here.
68
Now.
69
I have been living here for three years or since 2021.
70
We use "for" for duration.
71
and sense for the starting point.
72
2021. Of course, if you want to ask somebody, why they're here in this specific place.
73
Maybe that's a city, a country, or Just...
74
the meeting, the event, or the party, you could say: "What brings you here?" What brings you here?
75
And to answer that question, you could say: "I'm here because..." I know...
76
the host, because I'm studying because I'm working,
77
etc, etc, etc. we have this phenomenon in English.
78
I'm sure it exists in other languages too.
79
It's called Smalltalk.
80
small Talk.
81
Now a lot of native speakers hate Smalltalk I don't like it too much either.
82
but we just accept it because it's so important to to meet new people.
83
You have to be good at small talk.
84
Small talk is just casual conversation, It's not too deep.
85
It's not too heavy.
86
It's quite basic.
87
That's...
88
maybe talking about the weather, talking about...
89
what's happening around you in the situation.
90
We use Smalltalk to Break the ice.
91
to break the ice.
92
That means to get into a deeper conversation or to get to know somebody a bit better.
93
Now, a classic Small talk.
94
Example would be talking about the weather.
95
For example, you could comment on what's happening outside.
96
You could say: It's a lovely day today.
97
Isn't it?
98
or it's a miserable day to day.
99
isn't it?
100
That's a very...
101
natural way of talking about the weather.
102
You could say, We've had great weather lately.
103
or we've not had great weather lately.
104
Now you can talk about the weather if you want, but as I said, Maybe you want to be a bit more personal.
105
So you can ask some questions about the other person's life.
106
Now, one common question that a lot of people like to ask is,
107
"What do you do for work?" Or what do you do for a living.
108
Be careful, we don't say what's your job.
109
Doesn't sound natural.
110
We say, "What do you do for work?" Or what do you do for a living.
111
So, I say you have to be careful with this question because in some places and in some communities it's considered rude.
112
It's considered a bit too invasive Personally, I don't see any problem with it.
113
But just so you know, you might want to be a bit cautious with this question.
114
And definitely do not ask anybody how much money they make.
115
That's a big no -no. You can ask somebody what they do for Work.
116
But if they ask you, what you do for work,
117
You could say: I work as a... and then your occupation.
118
I have been working as a Blank.
119
four x amount of years or x amount of months Or you could say, currently, I'm...
120
Looking for a job.
121
Currently I'm studying.
122
Currently, I am retired.
123
Okay, there are lots of different things.
124
You could say Apart from work, you can also talk about somebody's interests.
125
Maybe you're at a party, maybe you're at a social event.
126
you might want to connect with somebody on a bit of a deeper level.
127
Now obviously you can say what do you do in your free time, or what are your hobbies, That's totally okay.
128
But, You can also say What are you passionate about?
129
What are you interested in? at the moment.
130
Or how do you like to spend your free time.
131
So these are all alternatives that sound a bit more...
132
complex, they sound a bit more elegant perhaps.
133
But of course there's nothing wrong with
134
what do you do in your free time or what do you like to do as a hobby.
135
Thank you.
136
Now, If somebody asks you,
137
this question: You could say: I'm passionate about x, y, z.
138
I like to surf, I like to ski.
139
I like to read books.
140
Okay?
141
I'm interested in something I'm interested in something.
142
Careful.
143
It's always in.
144
It's never on or at or into.
145
It's always interested in something.
146
For example, I'm interested in...
147
I'm interested in playing, Piano?
148
Thank you.
149
Those are also...
150
great alternatives.
151
And lastly, if you are a guest, at somebody's house.
152
or you're a guest, you've been invited to a meeting to a conference,
153
and you're talking to somebody who invited you or who is hosting you, then you should say thank you so much.
154
for having me.
155
Thank you so much.
156
for having me.
157
Of course, you could also say "thank you for the invitation" Thank you four inviting me,
158
But it sounds very natural to say thank you for having me.
159
We've learned some phrases you can use to introduce yourself, to ask a few basic questions about other people.
160
and of course to share a bit more about yourself.
161
But, At the end of the day, Probably the most important thing is confidence.
162
When you're meeting somebody new, especially in American culture, in British culture too as well.
163
But I'm sure you're aware that confidence is a big thing in the United States.
164
It's important to smile, it's important to be open, it's important to have Open body language.
165
So don't cross your arms.
166
Keep them open like this.
167
Even if you don't feel confident inside, even if you feel shy, even if you feel anxious socially,
168
it's really, really important to at least try to fake it,

to try to make an effort to be sociable even if you don't feel fully confident with your English.
