Hello and welcome or welcome back to my channel.
2
I'm Claire, a native speaker from the United States and an English teacher.
3
Today's video is a huge request.
4
It's another shadowing practice video.
5
And if you are interested in seeing more videos like this, I have a shadowing practice playlist here on my channel.
6
So you can find more shadowing practice videos there.
7
And there's even more to come because they have been such a big request from you all.
8
If this is your first time selecting a shadowing practice video and you're not sure what to expect, it's pretty simple.
9
Shadowing helps you improve your pronunciation and intonation and overall fluency of the language by mimicking a native speaker,
10
myself, and by doing so it instills in you good pronunciation habits and how to phrase certain things,
11
the inflection and tone of our voice when speaking a language
12
that is not our own is really important to being understood by other people.
13
So it's not so much about getting rid of any accent you may have, although this will help you if you want to achieve an American accent,
14
but it's more about improving your overall pronunciation of English so that you can become more fluent,
15
you can be understood by other people, and you can feel confident speaking in English yourself.
16
For today's shadowing practice I took a request from one of my channel members
17
and that is to focus on contractions with the word would.
18
So the story
19
that we're going to shadow together today has several contractions of pronouns with the word would that you can practice pronouncing.
20
If you have a burning request of anything that you want me to focus on in an upcoming shadowing practice, write it in the comments.
21
Of course, my channel members get priority reply to their comments.
22
So I always read those ones first.
23
If you're interested in joining, click the join button below.
24
So I'm going to read through a short story that has, as I said, multiple contractions with pronouns and would.
25
And after each phrase or sentence, I'm going to pause, give you time to repeat after me.
26
I'll take some time to point out certain pronunciations to you, and then we'll shadow the whole story together.
27
So you will say it at the same time as me.
28
All right, let's get started.
29
English made easy with Claire.
30
When I was a kid, you repeat.
31
When I was a kid,
32
my family and I'd, my family and I'd spend every summer at my grandparents' house.
33
Spend every summer at my grandparents' house.
34
Good.
35
So we have our first contraction with would in this sentence.
36
I plus would becomes I'd.
37
I'd.
38
My family and I'd.
39
Let's say the whole sentence together.
40
So shadow me.
41
When I was a kid, my family and I'd spend every summer at my grandparents' house.
42
Every morning.
43
Every morning.
44
We'd wake up early.
45
We'd wake up early.
46
And my grandpa would make breakfast.
47
And my grandpa would make breakfast.
48
We have our second contraction with wood here.
49
We plus wood becomes weed.
50
Weed.
51
Now it would also be possible to contract wood with grandpa,
52
you could say, and my grandpa'd make breakfast.
53
You could actually contract would with a word that's not a pronoun.
54
So sometimes you might hear native speakers do that.
55
I personally would even in rapid speech, not make this contraction.
56
If I was telling a story, I'm pretty sure I would just say my grandpa would make breakfast, but you might hear it, or you might try it for yourself.
57
My grandpa'd make breakfast.
58
My grandpa'd make breakfast.
59
He'd usually make us pancakes.
60
He'd usually make us pancakes pancakes.
61
Good, so here we have he plus would becomes he'd.
62
He'd.
63
Okay, let's shadow these two sentences together.
64
Here we go.
65
Every morning, we'd wake up early, and my grandpa would make breakfast.
66
He'd usually make us pancakes.
67
After breakfast, after breakfast, we'd go for a walk in the woods with my grandma.
68
We'd go for a walk in the woods with my grandma.
69
She'd show us different plants and animal tracks.
70
She'd show us different plants and animal tracks.
71
Good.
72
She plus would becomes she'd.
73
She'd.
74
She'd show us.
75
She'd show us.
76
Okay, let's shadow this section together.
77
After breakfast, we'd go for a walk in the woods with my grandma.
78
She'd show us different plants and animal tracks.
79
In the evenings, in the evenings,
80
we'd sit on the porch, We'd sit on the porch
81
And they'd tell us stories until it got dark
82
And they'd tell us stories until it got dark
83
they plus would becomes they'd.
84
They'd.
85
Pay attention to when I link words like for example until it got dark.
86
Until it got dark.
87
That whole phrase you can combine in your brain as one inflection.
88
So try and mimic the inflection that I say it in.
89
Until it got dark.
90
Until it got dark.
91
So the T's at the end of it and got become stopped.
92
So we don't hear them very much.
93
Or it sounds like a D sound maybe.
94
Until it got dark.
95
Got, got, got dark.
96
Especially with the D of dark coming after the word got, you can think of it as dropping that T completely.
97
Got dark.
98
So we just have that D sound and we've dropped the T.
99
But like I said, it might be easier to think in one fluid phrase until it got dark.
100
And you can practice that exact inflection.
101
And you can do that for a lot of the phrases that I go through on your own.
102
You can pay attention to the way I say it and my inflection and mimic that exactly.
103
So repeat these parts of the video as many times as you need to really match that.
104
Okay, let's say this sentence together, shadow me.
105
In the evenings, we'd sit on the porch and they'd tell us stories until it got dark.
106
Those summers were some of the best times of my life.
107
Those summers were some of the best times of my life.
108
I'd give anything to relive just one of those days.
109
I'd give anything to relive just one of those days.
110
Another phrase you can completely think of linked together is one of those,
111
one of those days, one of those days, one of those days.
112
So we can link the ending of one to the beginning of of because it starts with a vowel.
113
And then we can drop the v sound at the end
114
of of as we often do in rapid speech to link with the next word.
115
One of those days.
116
One of those days.
117
And the same goes for the phrase in the sentence before, some of the, some of the.
118
We can drop the v sound in of.
119
Some of the best times of my life, of my life.
120
There we do have the v sound.
121
Now I naturally pronounce the v sound in of with the phrase of my life,
122
but it wouldn't be unheard of to hear a my life to also drop that sound.
123
But basically it wouldn't be wrong if you pronounce that.
124
If you said some of the, some of the, and you did pronounce the sound or just one of those,
125
one of those days, obviously it wouldn't be wrong.
126
But if you do find that sound particularly difficult or you want to achieve this natural linked speech,
127
That's definitely one of the sounds you can drop.
128
Okay, let's say this final section all together.
129
Those summers were some of the best times of my life.
130
I'd give anything to relive just one of those days.
131
So the contractions with would are pretty simple
132
because it's basically just adding a d sound to the end of the pronoun
133
and the pronoun keeps its same pronunciation that it would have without the contraction at the end.
134
So I becomes I'd, we becomes we'd, he he'd, she she'd, they they'd.
135

137
Now let's say the whole story together without stopping.
138
You are going to shadow me.
139
When I was a kid, my family and I'd spend every summer at my grandparents' house.
140
Every morning, we'd wake up early and my grandpa would make breakfast.
141
He'd usually make us pancakes.
142
After breakfast, we'd go for a walk in the woods with my grandma.
143
She'd show us different plants and animal tracks.
144
In the evenings, we'd sit on the porch, and they'd tell us stories until it got dark.
145
Those summers were some of the best times of my life.
146
I'd give anything to relive just one of those days.
147
All right, guys, so repeat
148
that part of the video as many times as you like until you feel confident
149
and comfortable getting out all those phrases and pronouncing those contractions correctly.
150
Let me know in the comments how it went for you and I will see you in the next shadowing practice.
151
Bye for now!
