1
There is a tendency that I'm seeing more often in my work as a counselor.
2
It's concerning.
3
It's this tendency of having very, very little tolerance for how long people are willing to suck at something.
4
You know, a very low tolerance for how long they're willing to kind of struggle
5
and toil and fail in their attempt to attain a certain goal.
6
so i make this video because it's it's such a concerning uh predicament
7
because i want to talk about what i think they're losing
8
when they forego that experience of the toil and struggle
9
and failure but also too i want to talk about why i think it's
10
so easy to perpetuate and why i so fully understand
11
and empathize with where they're coming from
12
so first let's start
13
there like looking at looking at this situation like trying to picture myself as a 15 year old
14
or something being told hey read catcher in the rye
15
and i want you to write
16
this five paragraph essay on it i certainly can understand being
17
like uh no guy why do i want to sit there
18
and read this book words on a page boring the piss out of me
19
and then try to sit here in front of a blank page
20
and write five pages worth of material about what I thought on it.
21
Yeah.
22
Kick rocks.
23
Chachi BT's got me.
24
AI exists.
25
Get away from me.
26
I get it.
27
I understand where they're coming from, right?
28
Same thing with sports.
29
Like why would I want to join this team?
30
Everybody else is already close -knit.
31
They're friends.
32
They've been on this team for two years.
33
They're looking at me like, who's this guy and and i suck i'm throwing the ball like an absolute idiot
34
and everybody's looking at me
35
and i don't like how this makes me feel why would i do this
36
when i could just go play video games it's much more fun why am i going to go talk to
37
that girl and try to get a girlfriend
38
when i've got a simulated version of that right here in my pocket
39
and that'll take care of what i'm looking for at least for now at least for this moment
40
and that's kind of the issue
41
we are sacrificing a piece of ourselves on the altar of convenience every time
42
we take the counterfeit version right i'm going to take counterfeit version
43
i'm going to take counterfeit version that's going to satiate this feeling right now
44
and there's major issue with that because we're not even realizing uh
45
that we're on a steady diet of this counterfeit bullshit
46
because we don't have enough time away from our phones in
47
general to have intentionality to have deep insightful thought in our own lives
48
you know um contemplating what am i doing am i is
49
this how i want to do things not having any perspective on ourselves or our lives because we're just in it
50
piece by piece moment by moment eating the counterfeit
51
um and so that's kind of the why i'm saying i understand why this is
52
so concerning and social media exacerbates and kind of facilitates this environment of the perceived of the aesthetic of
53
just do the surface level just shine
54
that surface just make it presentable boom just fix it quick fix all about the looks
55
that is why i get the concern and i empathize with it
56
but i don't think we put
57
so much thought into how deeply uh detrimental it is to us
58
i don't have a good word for our understanding of exactly what it is we're leaving behind maybe
59
you do what we're leaving behind when we forgo that that time of toil and struggle but it's like
60
when you read that book and you're bored and you don't know
61
if you can get to it you're learning something about discipline
62
and how you how you push yourself and what does motivate you
63
and what do you really want out of this life
64
and then you're sitting there with the blank page
65
and you're thinking about the book and you're actually being honest
66
and earnest in your attempt to to pull something from who you are
67
and what you understand what you make of this place
68
and the words uh that were written on the page
69
and you're kind of coming up with something brand new with the synergy of those two those two concepts
70
and you're making something new all your own your fresh own ideas on the page there's something
71
so beautiful and transcendent and
72
improving about that that they're just leaving on the table
73
it's like there's this whole garden in you that can grow
74
and you can be this incredibly enriched person
75
but the soil the enriched soil that is needed for
76
that kind of internal garden only comes from
77
that time under tension
78
it only comes from being the new guy in the boxing gym who doesn't know how to throw a punch
79
and is embarrassed as the guy next to him makes the bag sound like it's a war zone
80
you know what i mean there's something in that that you learn
81
and i don't mean just oh i'm learning the skill of boxing and now i'm a better boxer i mean
82
Why am I insecure?
83
Oh, I'm learning about brotherhood.
84
I'm learning about camaraderie.
85
There's these internal things that will happen to these,
86
these things that will happen to you that pull on all of these existential questions left, right and center.
87
And you're going to go, wow, I know myself so much better.
88
But what in the world is AI going to teach you about yourself?
89
What in the world is the video game going to teach you about yourself?
90
And maybe that one has a little bit more merit than I'm giving.
91
I'm not a video game person, but there's probably more merits in the video games.
92
But with the videos on your phone, what is that going to help you with?
93
What's it going to give you like, you know, that's true here?
94
I don't know.
95
I don't think a whole lot.
96
I don't think a whole lot.
97
And I worry about that tendency for kids,
98
younger individuals, and even older individuals and even myself to just give up more of who we could be
99
and just handing it over to convenience for the perception,
100
for the aesthetic, for the sheen on top to just get us to the next hit.
101
I guess that's just a life dictated by dopamine or something, you know?
102
And it's not a life I want to live.
103
So I'm trying to break out of it for myself and do more that pushes me out of my comfort zone,
104
that teaches me more about myself.
105
I don't do enough of it.
106
And I'm trying to help with these clients to understand the benefit of that toil.
107
Anyway, what do you guys think about that?
108
And what are we leaving behind when we say, I'm just going to hit the convenient button?
109
That was easy.
110
You know, what are we giving up?
111
I'm curious.
112
Okay, turn off.
