Hello.
2
My name is Evie from the YouTube channel English with Evie.
3
And you are listening to The English Podcast, a podcast designed to make English a part of your life.
4
Today, we are going to be talking all about personality types.
5
Personality types in particular being an introvert versus being an extrovert.
6
This podcast is designed for English learners to use while they are doing other things.
7
So listen to this while you are cleaning your bedroom, while you are walking the dog, listen to this podcast while you are on the way to work.
8
I want you to practice listening.
9
Practice listening while you are doing other things.
10
We're studying right now, okay?
11
This counts as homework.
12
All right.
13
I have brought a coffee with me today for the podcast.
14
So I have a I have an iced coffee with me.
15
And I thought it could be really interesting to speak about the idea of being an introvert versus being an extrovert.
16
So introverts and extroverts.
17
This might be a term that you are familiar with already.
18
I know some people are interested in like personality tests and things like this.
19
But just in case you do not know what is an introvert or an extrovert, you haven't heard these terms before.
20
It's basically a way of describing how outgoing somebody is, how much they like to be around people.
21
So, If you are extroverted, it means that you are somebody who loves to be surrounded by people.
22
Hanging out with people, it gives you energy, it makes you super happy.
23
Extroverts are usually very confident and they have lots of friends and they love being at like a house party.
24
If they could walk into a room full of people that they don't know, For them, that's like the dream, okay?
25
Meanwhile, for introverts, The association is that they are more, a little bit more shy, I suppose.
26
Maybe more reserved, we would say.
27
They...
28
maybe prefer to be with people who they know very, very well.
29
And often introverts really like to be by themselves.
30
If they are under stress or if an introvert feels like everything in the world is too much,
31
they're maybe more likely to spend some time alone as opposed to seeking out lots of people,
32
trying to find lots of people to hang out with.
33
I think this is a really
34
A really interesting topic because there's lots of tests and things
35
that you can do to work out if you as a person are more introverted or more extroverted.
36
For example, you can just do like a full -on personality.
37
test.
38
There's one which is really, really popular called the Myers -Briggs.
39
Is it the Myers -Briggs?
40
Oh, it's a, it's an MBTI.
41
It's an MBTI test or the website is called 16 personality types test.
42
I will link it below if you want to have a go.
43
And it's basically a test that you can do to see like exactly what your personality type is is.
44
So if you do this test, it will tell you whether you are introverted or extroverted.
45
These tests are really interesting.
46
I know that in some countries they are sort of valued or better known than in other countries.
47
So lots of my Korean friends and Korean students, they all know their personality type from this test.
48
So I did that test.
49
and I'll tell you what mine was.
50
I was an INFJ.
51
The other way that people say you can tell whether you are more introverted
52
or extroverted as a person is if you go and hang out with like a big group of people.
53
You know, maybe some of them are your friends, but some of them are new people, and you're socializing with loads of people during an evening.
54
Does that experience Does it give you energy or does it take energy away?
55
So if you are an introvert, if it drains you, if you feel like, okay, that social interaction was like really fun,
56
but now I need to recharge, then probably you are more of an introvert.
57
But if you go to that event and you literally leave it feeling on top of the world,
58
if you feel like you have so much energy, you feel great, that was the best thing, it refreshed you, then you are an extrovert.
59
So the idea that if socializing gives you energy, then you're an extrovert.
60
And if it takes energy away, then you are an introvert.
61
I am an introvert.
62
I know that maybe that's surprising.
63
I think whenever I tell people I'm an introvert, they're like, Go.
64
No way.
65
But I actually, I think I probably am.
66
I did do the Myers -Briggs personality type thing, the 16 personality types test,
67
and I was 53 % introverted.
68
So I think I'm like...
69
I'm half and half, you know?
70
Half introverted, half extroverted, I think.
71
I know there are some people who call this like At the borderline,
72
we would say that like at the borderline, 50 % around this sort of area, if you're on the borderline with these things,
73
then you are an ambivert.
74
So you're not an introvert, you're not an extrovert, you're an ambivert.
75
Um, And I think I can... be extroverted.
76
Like I really enjoy speaking with people.
77
I enjoy like
78
spending time with people like I love it I love talking obviously this is like my job is just um talk
79
but I think that for me personally I I you know, I do lose energy from socializing.
80
I think for me, I do lose energy from socializing in some ways.
81
Like I, if I get really stressed, For me, the best way to recover is like,
82
I'm gonna sit on my own in my room and I'm gonna like watch...
83
like a documentary.
84
You know, I love being with my friends and my friends really don't drain me.
85
But if I go to a house party, if I were to like meet loads of new people
86
I honestly would need to like sit in a dark room and just... and recover.
87
That's insane.
88
But I, you know, I'm not one of those people who My dream night out is like spending time speaking to strangers.
89
I just...
90
I'm a little bit more introverted, I think.
91
And yeah, I don't mind public speaking.
92
Like I used to be a tour guide.
93
So I would speak to people all the time.
94
I then became an English teacher online.
95
And that's a lot of conversation.
96
But I love one on one.
97
like one on one conversation.
98
I can do that all day.
99
And I really, really, really enjoy it.
100
But that's the thing.
101
Whenever I go to like a house party, I don't really go to house parties anymore.
102
But when I used to go to house parties, I would always end up.
103
sat in a room with like one person and they would just be telling me their life story.
104
They would be like, yeah, you know, like when I was eight, my parents got divorced and I'll be like, oh, wow.
105
Like, how was that for you?
106
I always have questions.
107
I'm nosy.
108
Maybe it's just I'm nosy.
109
I like knowing other people's business.
110
I'm a gossip.
111
I don't know.
112
I just actually thought of like a bit of slang.
113
for that, but when I'm in like a house party and people are telling me
114
their life story and they're telling me like everything that's ever happened to them.
115
Some people call that trauma dumping.
116
This is like slang.
117
If you speak to like a 50 year old Brit, they're not going to know what that is.
118
But like the youth, the young people are saying trauma dumping these days.
119
It means like...
120
Someone is dumping all their trauma on you.
121
They're just like telling you every bad thing that has ever happened. to them
122
and that's what happens to me at a house party is
123
I sit down they find me like other introverts find me
124
and they tell me their life story and that's just what happens at a house party.
125
But honestly one of the reasons why I thought this was an interesting topic
126
obviously because this personality type thing is is relevant to everyone.
127
But also because I have been reading some papers recently on linguistics.
128
like applied linguistics.
129
I've been interested in like the science behind language learning.
130
And something really, really interesting is that students who are more confident and not anxious people and are like outgoing, Allegedly.
131
according to the papers, I'll link them below too.
132
You can fact check me if you want.
133
I'll put the page.
134
I'll put the page on screen and everything.
135
Um, but apparently students who are more self -confident,
136
who feel less anxious in social situations, They learn languages better. So, This technically means
137
that extroverts can learn how to speak in a language faster than like somebody who's super shy or super introverted.
138
And I think that makes sense because So much of language learning is just just doing the damn thing.
139
Like, if you want to sit down and write, I mean, I don't mean this,
140
I hate studying grammar but some people actually love studying grammar and they really genuinely
141
learn languages by sitting down and like studying a textbook.
142
I have a friend like this, she speaks like four languages and she loves,
143
she loves to read a textbook and study grammar, she's insane but she is a really great linguist.
144
So I'm not going to say that doing that doesn't work, but she is also very confident.
145
Like even though she might not have the best linguistic abilities, if she meets somebody who speaks French,
146
for example, you know 100 % she is going to speak French.
147
and she's so extroverted she doesn't care that she's making mistakes she'll just "I'm gonna speak French to you." And she goes.
148
And I think it's one of the things that makes her so amazing at learning.
149
a language because she goes I can do this and she just does it.
150
And that means that she gets so many more opportunities.
151
She gets so many more opportunities to practice and improve and build confidence because So much of speaking well,
152
is related to confidence.
153
It's not actually to do with linguistic ability.
154
For example, when I get nervous.
155
So I am British.
156
I'm a British person.
157
I grew up in the UK.
158
My family are British.
159
I, at least until very recently, I only spoke English.
160
But I will make grammatical mistakes when I get nervous.
161
When I get nervous, I make grammatical mistakes.
162
in my native language.
163
And I'm sure this happens to you. as well.
164
If you're you know, public speaking, sometimes you can hear yourself.
165
Fuck up.
166
It happens.
167
It happens to everybody.
168
Like we get nervous.
169
We have a word for it.
170
We call it tongue tied.
171
You get tongue tied when you're nervous and you start...
172
stuttering, you start making mistakes, your sentences are not ordered correctly, it's really common.
173
So if you are somebody who is naturally more confident, of course your, your language is going to sound so much better.
174
Um, I'm not telling you this.
175
because I want to make you feel depressed if you are an introvert.
176
If you are introverted, that does not mean that you cannot learn a language.
177
Like, duh, how many introverts learn languages all the time?
178
I'm an introvert and every time I meet anybody new who speaks Spanish I can promise you
179
that I don't say a single word.
180
Everyone's like "Evie make a video speaking Spanish girl No,
181
because I'm so scared of making mistakes in front of people because I think I'm probably Like a little bit, I'm a little bit shy.
182
But it's true that if I speak I just get better.
183
The reason why I'm saying this, I mean, obviously you can feel nervous about speaking in English,
184
if you are an extrovert or if you are an introvert, it doesn't matter.
185
Everybody feels nervous sometimes, especially speaking in another language.
186
It's scary, okay?
187
It's scary as hell. But...
188
push through it.
189
I would encourage you to, you know, be confident if you are somebody who you get the opportunity to speak English.
190
Speak up.
191
Speak up, do it.
192
Go on, if you are somebody who plays video games online, turn your mic on, you know?
193
Nobody is going to be rude to you.
194
Well, they might, but do it anyway.
195
Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
196
You know, I sometimes see people write comments down below and sometimes people, they use an AI to like check their answers.
197
Don't do it.
198
Don't do it.
199
I mean, do it if you want, but just
200
comment and make mistakes because you will look back on these comments
201
and see the progress that you've made
202
and it will allow you to you know when you mess up your brain is just developing
203
more and more of these sort of roots that will help you speak better and feel more confident so
204
Really go for it.
205
Really go for it.
206
I think you should.
207
I also think if you can change your mentality to feel more confident, to be willing to make more mistakes,
208
to speak up, that's gonna be great for you.
209
And be careful because there's a lot of content trending at the moment of people saying things like, Don't say this in English.
210
If you want to sound native, you have to say this and never say that.
211
try and be careful with that sort of content because the more of these like negative associations you build in your brain, you're going to start hesitating before you speak.
212
So, Just be willing to Make mistakes.
213
Don't be afraid to, you know, fuck up.
214
Just...
215
Just do it.
216
You're doing great.
217
I'm going to wrap this podcast up here because I am literally yabbering away.
218
I am going to be uploading two videos this week.
219
This podcast is going to be one of the videos and there's going to be another one at my regular
220
scheduled time as well But I really hope that you found this video interesting.
221
And hopefully we've been able to explore a little bit why being extroverted can help you with language learning.
222
And hopefully these words have stuck in your brain as well.
223
So that just leaves me to say thank you so, so much for listening to this podcast.
224
And I will see you in the next one.
225
Have a wonderful rest of your day.
226
Bye.
