6
For this video, I am in Northern California, and I'm on the coast of Northern California.
7
I'm in a place called Bodega Bay.
8
This behind me, this is the bay.
9
This is a lookout point here at Bodega Bay.
10
You can see there's a parking lot behind me full of about 40 cars, I would say.
11
40 trucks and cars.
12
There's also a bathroom right here.
13
This little building is a bathroom.
14
And I actually enjoyed a nice picnic with my family before filming this here.
15
There are some places for people to stand, read some signs with information about this place,
16
and enjoy the beautiful view of the ocean.
17
There's also some really beautiful cliffs behind us
18
and you can see the waves crashing down against the cliffs and it creates this seafoam,
19
this white foam that is the result of the waves crashing.
20
It creates the seafoam.
21
I saw a seal swimming over there earlier.
22
He was swimming and catching some fish in that area.
23
I don't know if you can see in the hills, but there are actually a lot of families
24
that are hiking up there there are groups of people walking along the paths on the hill
25
and there's also some picnic benches that's where i had lunch with my family earlier we brought some sandwiches
26
and we sat at those picnic benches
27
and then once we were done we decided to go whale watching and keep exploring down the trail.
28
We had a beautiful view while we were eating our lunch at the picnic tables.
29
there are trails all around these cliffs for people to walk on
30
so most people they might stay down near the parking lot
31
and take some pictures enjoy the view but
32
if you want to go hiking
33
or walking there are some trails all throughout these hills
34
and cliffs and actually my family is far away on the other side of this
35
they're probably all the way over here by now because I stayed behind to record this video.
36
The reason that we came out here today was not just to enjoy the view and enjoy picnic lunch.
37
We also came out here for one specific activity, whale watching.
38
Just a few minutes earlier, we sat down right here in this spot and we looked out at the ocean behind us.
39
Further off into the distance, we actually had to look at the horizon right here.
40
The horizon is where the sky meets the ocean.
41
There we saw some whales.
42
Now, we didn't see the entire whale.
43
We didn't see the whales jumping out of the water.
44
No, we didn't even really see their body we did not
45
see their whole body the only thing we saw was them spouting water out of their blowhole they'd go
46
and then a big spout of water would go up straight into the air that's what we could see
47
on the horizon In order to see the whales, we used binoculars.
48
You can sometimes see the whales spouting without binoculars, but you have to have really good eyes.
49
Really good eyes.
50
My brother -in -law, he was able to see it with just his eyes.
51
Everybody else, we needed binoculars.
52
These are binoculars.
53
You use binoculars like this.
54
You put them up to your eyes and then you look out.
55
You look out into the distance with them.
56
That way you can zoom in on something really far away.
57
that's how you can see with binoculars so
58
if you want to do an activity like whale watching you need to bring some binoculars
59
and maybe even a chair to sit for a while
60
because you have to have a lot of patience my niece was with us my niece is with us
61
but she's only six years old She's a little kid, so she is very excited to see whales, but she's not very patient.
62
Her expectation was she would see the entire whale jumping out of the ocean with no binoculars, but that's not what happened.
63
We told her she has to try to use the binoculars, and even when you use them you only see the spout of water going into the air.
64
It's very rare that you'll see the tail or the fins of the whales.
65
I got lucky.
66
I actually saw a little bit of the whale's back.
67
I saw a humpback whale and I saw the hump on his back.
68
But I just got lucky.
69
I was looking at the right place at the right time.
70
So you have to have a lot of patience to go whale watching.
71
Down there, there are a lot of birds.
72
There are a lot of seabirds sitting on this rock.
73
You can see probably at least a hundred birds are sitting on this rock.
74
And they're not scared of the waves.
75
They do this every day.
76
And down here, there's probably some tide pools.
77
There are probably some sea urchins, anemones, and different animals.
78
Crabs, they live in the shallow water here that's close to the land, close to the cliffs.
79
They live in those rocks, and that's exactly why those birds are theirs.
80
They probably get a lot of their food on these rocks with all of the little sea creatures that live there.
81
But out there in the distance is where you find your bigger animals.
82
These birds are flying together in a flock.
83
They're flying together and landing on the rock.
84
That's sea foam.
85
Seafoam is that white -colored water.
86
It gets stuck there because there aren't a lot of big waves to wash the seafoam away.
87
I'm following the path on top of the cliff.
88
I'm gonna make it to my family.
89
They're waiting for me further down this path.
90
I'm approaching a fork in the road.
91
When you're on a path and it splits into two different directions, this is called a fork in the road.
92
And you have to make a decision
93
if you're gonna to go to the left or you're going to go to the right at the fork in the road.
94
Now I see my family further up the trail to the right so I'm going to take a right.
95
This is a memorial.
96
It's at the top of the cliff, and it's a memorial made out of stone.
97
And there is a plaque here that explains who the memorial is for.
98
It says, this site was created as a tribute to our men
99
and women who make their living from the sea and a memorial to those who have lost their lives to it.
100
Bodega Bay Auxiliary for Fisheries.
101
So this is a memorial for the people who fish in the ocean.
102
They make their living by going out in boats
103
and ships and they catch fish
104
and bring it back to the land for the fish to be eaten as food
105
and it can be a very dangerous job it can be a very dangerous job because the ocean is dangerous
106
there can be a storm a storm can be very difficult to navigate safely and reach land again
107
you also have to make sure you don't go too close to the edge of the cliff
108
or you definitely will fall it can be very dangerous there's no rail here There's no handles.
109
There's no sign that says, warning, don't step too close to the edge.
110
You have to know.
111
You have to be responsible when you come to a place like this to not go too close to the edge,
112
or you will definitely fall into the ocean.
113
There are sharp rocks.
114
There's strong waves.
115
It's a beautiful place, it's a beautiful view,
116
but it's not a very safe place.
117
You have to be very careful coming to a place like this.
118
Now I'm going to go catch up to my family.
119
My family is somewhere up here.
120
they're up on that cliff somewhere
121
and i need to go i need to go catch up to them they're probably looking at these rocks
122
those are some really sharp rocks
123
and boulders there's no way to get down there there's no path to go to those rocks.
124
It would be very dangerous to go down to that area.
125
You can see a small boat is making its way across the ocean back into the bay.
126
It's traveling eastward.
127
My camera right now is facing south.
128
It's showing the California coast from the north facing south and
129
that boat is traveling east to get back to the bay
130
where they have a marina where a bunch of boats are parked.
131
You see this man is taking a beautiful picture of the cliffs and the rocks.
132
I see two people trying to go down to the beach.
133
they're trying to climb down the side of the cliff to the beach but
134
the path gets really steep over here I don't think they're
135
gonna be able to make it all the way down to the beach they're trying though
136
and I hope that they stay safe I hope nobody falls and gets hurt.
137
Thank you for joining me on this trip to Bodega Bay in Northern California.
138
Let me know in the comments if you learned any new words from this video, and I'll see you in the next video.
139
Bye -bye.
