Leçon 118 · Étape 10: Structures avancées
L'inversion
AvancéInversion
Forme et emploi
Never have I…, Had I known… — l'auxiliaire avant le sujet pour insister
1.Formation
L'inversion se produit quand un mot ou une expression négative ou restrictive (never, rarely, only then, not until…) est placé en tête de phrase pour insister.
| Ordre normal | Inversion |
|---|---|
| I have never tasted coffee this strong. | Never have I tasted coffee this strong. |
| He seldom calls his brother. | Seldom does he call his brother. |
| I didn't realise until later. | Not until later did I realise. |
| The film had hardly begun when my phone rang. | Hardly had the film begun when my phone rang. |
| You must not touch this switch under any circumstances. | Under no circumstances must you touch this switch. |
À sa place habituelle, on garde l'ordre normal : I have never seen…, We rarely eat out. Et quand only / hardly porte sur le sujet, il n'y a pas d'inversion : Only my brother knows the password. Hardly anyone came.
2.Après les mots négatifs et restrictifs
1. Never / Rarely / Seldom / At no time / Nowhere / Never again
Seldom have I felt so welcome in a new city.
At no time did anyone tell us the flight was cancelled.
Never again will I lend him money.
Nowhere else can you see so many motorbikes at once.
2. Hardly / Scarcely … when et No sooner … than — une chose se produit juste après une autre, généralement avec had + V3
Hardly had I closed my eyes when the alarm went off.
No sooner had the match started than the rain came down.
(no sooner va avec than, hardly avec when)
3. Only when / Only after / Only if / Only then / Not until — l'inversion se fait dans la proposition principale, pas dans la proposition en when / after / if / until
Only when the lights came on did we see the mess.
Not until I moved abroad did I appreciate my mum's cooking.
Only if you book early will you get a discount.
Only then did I realise how lucky I was.
Ce n'est qu'à ce moment-là que j'ai compris la chance que j'avais.
4. Little / Under no circumstances / On no account / Not only
Little did he know that his friends were planning a surprise.
On no account should you share your password.
Not only was the hotel noisy, but it was also dirty.
(voir la leçon « Not only … but also »)
| Type | Avec if | Avec inversion |
|---|---|---|
| Type 3 : had | If we had left earlier, we would have caught the train. | Had we left earlier, we would have caught the train. |
| Type 2 : were | If the shop were closer, I'd go there more often. | Were the shop closer, I'd go there more often. |
| Type 1 : should | If you have any questions, please contact us. | Should you have any questions, please contact us. |
| Négation | If it hadn't been for your help, we'd have failed. | Had it not been for your help, we'd have failed. |
Elles n'ont pas le même registre : Should you… est très courant dans les e-mails professionnels et les avis ; Had I known… passe très bien à l'oral aussi ; Were I… est assez soutenu et fait livresque dans la conversation.
À la forme négative, not se place après le sujet et ne se contracte pas : Had it not rained… / Were it not for… — pas « Hadn't it rained… ».
I'm starving. — So am I.
Je meurs de faim. — Moi aussi. (voir la leçon « So do I » / « I think so »)
Lan didn't enjoy the film, and neither did her husband.
Lan n'a pas aimé le film, et son mari non plus.
I can't swim. — Nor can I.
Je ne sais pas nager. — Moi non plus.
Look, here comes the bus!
5.Registre
| Registre | Structures |
|---|---|
| Langue de tous les jours | So am I, Neither did I, Nor can I, Here comes the bus |
| Emphatique, passe aussi à l'oral | Never again will I…, Not only…, Little did I know…, Had I known… |
| Soutenu : écrit, informations, discours | Rarely / Seldom…, At no time…, Only when / after…, Not until…, Hardly … when, No sooner … than |
| Avis, lettres professionnelles | Should you…, Under no circumstances…, On no account… |
| Très soutenu, littéraire | Were I…, Scarcely had…, So + adjective + was … that… |
Never I will forget your kindness.Never will I forget your kindness.
Never en tête → on inverse l'auxiliaire.
Rarely we eat out during the week.Rarely do we eat out during the week.
Au présent simple, on emprunte do pour faire l'inversion.
Only after I paid did I realised the price was wrong.Only after I paid did I realise the price was wrong.
Après did, on emploie la base verbale.
Not until I got home I realised I had lost my wallet. Not until I got home did I realise I had lost my wallet.
Hadn't it rained, we would have gone to the beach.Had it not rained, we would have gone to the beach.
Hardly had we started eating than the lights went out.Hardly had we started eating when the lights went out.
Hardly … when, no sooner … than.
Exemples
- Never have I seen such a beautiful sunset.
- Rarely is the bus on time in the rainy season.
- Hardly had I sat down when the phone rang.
- Not until I got home did I realise I had lost my wallet.
