L'inversione
AvanzatoInversion
Forma e uso
Never have I…, Had I known… — l'ausiliare prima del soggetto per enfasi
1.Forma
| Ordine normale | Inversione |
|---|---|
| I have never tasted coffee this strong. | Never have I tasted coffee this strong. |
| He seldom calls his brother. | Seldom does he call his brother. |
| I didn't realise until later. | Not until later did I realise. |
| The film had hardly begun when my phone rang. | Hardly had the film begun when my phone rang. |
| You must not touch this switch under any circumstances. | Under no circumstances must you touch this switch. |
Scegli l'ausiliare esattamente come faresti in una domanda: se ce n'è già uno (have, be, can, will, should…), spostalo; al present simple / past simple, prendi in prestito do / does / did e metti il verbo principale alla forma base.
Nella sua posizione normale, l'ordine resta normale: I have never seen…, We rarely eat out. Only my brother knows the password. Hardly anyone came.
2.Dopo parole negative e limitative
1. Never / Rarely / Seldom / At no time / Nowhere / Never again
Seldom have I felt so welcome in a new city.
At no time did anyone tell us the flight was cancelled.
Never again will I lend him money.
Non gli presterò mai più soldi.
Nowhere else can you see so many motorbikes at once.
In nessun altro posto puoi vedere così tanti motorini tutti insieme.
2. Hardly / Scarcely … when e No sooner … than: una cosa succede subito dopo un'altra, di solito con had + V3
Hardly had I closed my eyes when the alarm went off.
No sooner had the match started than the rain came down.
(no sooner va con than, hardly con when)
3. Only when / Only after / Only if / Only then / Not until: l'inversione è nella frase principale, non nella frase con when / after / if / until
Only when the lights came on did we see the mess.
Not until I moved abroad did I appreciate my mum's cooking.
Solo dopo essermi trasferito all'estero ho apprezzato la cucina della mamma.
Only if you book early will you get a discount.
Solo se prenoti in anticipo avrai uno sconto.
Only then did I realise how lucky I was.
Solo allora ho capito quanto ero fortunato.
4. Little / Under no circumstances / On no account / Not only
Little did he know that his friends were planning a surprise.
On no account should you share your password.
Not only was the hotel noisy, but it was also dirty.
(vedi la lezione “Not only … but also”)
3.Inversione al posto di if
Nell'inglese formale puoi togliere if e mettere had / should / were prima del soggetto.
| Tipo | Con if | Con inversione |
|---|---|---|
| Terzo tipo: had | If we had left earlier, we would have caught the train. | Had we left earlier, we would have caught the train. |
| Secondo tipo: were | If the shop were closer, I'd go there more often. | Were the shop closer, I'd go there more often. |
| Primo tipo: should | If you have any questions, please contact us. | Should you have any questions, please contact us. |
| Negativa | If it hadn't been for your help, we'd have failed. | Had it not been for your help, we'd have failed. |
Cambia il registro: Should you…
Were it not for…, non “Hadn't it rained…”.
I'm starving. — So am I.
Sto morendo di fame. — Anch'io. (vedi la lezione “‘So do I’ / ‘I think so’”)
Lan didn't enjoy the film, and neither did her husband.
I can't swim. — Nor can I.
Non so nuotare. — Neanch'io.
Look, here comes the bus!
Guarda, ecco l'autobus! (si sposta il verbo principale stesso, senza do)
Con Here / There + un verbo di movimento, non invertire quando il soggetto è un pronome: Here it comes (non: Here comes it).
5.Registro
| Registro | Schemi |
|---|---|
| Parlato di tutti i giorni | So am I, Neither did I, Nor can I, Here comes the bus |
| Enfatico, va bene anche nel parlato | Never again will I…, Not only…, Little did I know…, Had I known… |
| Formale: scritto, notizie, discorsi | Rarely / Seldom…, At no time…, Only when / after…, Not until…, Hardly … when, No sooner … than |
| Avvisi, lettere commerciali | Should you…, Under no circumstances…, On no account… |
| Molto formale, letterario | Were I…, Scarcely had…, So + adjective + was … that… |
6.Errori comuni
Never I will forget your kindness.Never will I forget your kindness.
Never all'inizio → inverti l'ausiliare.
Rarely we eat out during the week.Rarely do we eat out during the week.
Il present simple prende in prestito do per l'inversione.
Only after I paid did I realised the price was wrong.Only after I paid did I realise the price was wrong.
Dopo did si usa la forma base.
Not until I got home I realised I had lost my wallet. Not until I got home did I realise I had lost my wallet.
È la frase principale che si inverte.
Hadn't it rained, we would have gone to the beach.Had it not rained, we would have gone to the beach.
Not va dopo il soggetto, senza contrazione.
Hardly had we started eating than the lights went out.Hardly had we started eating when the lights went out.
Hardly … when, no sooner … than.
Esempi
- Never have I seen such a beautiful sunset.
- Rarely is the bus on time in the rainy season.
- Hardly had I sat down when the phone rang.
- Not until I got home did I realise I had lost my wallet.
