Forma e uso
What I need is…, It was X that…
Ci sono due tipi principali: It + be + X + that / who… e What… + be + X. Partendo da Minh fixed the printer yesterday, puoi mettere in risalto ciascuna parte:
| In risalto | Frase scissa |
|---|---|
| chi l'ha fatto | It was Minh who fixed the printer yesterday. |
| la cosa | It was the printer that Minh fixed yesterday. |
| il momento | It was yesterday that Minh fixed the printer. |
| l'azione | What Minh did yesterday was fix the printer. |
It was MINH who fixed it. La struttura e l'intonazione lavorano insieme.
2.It + be + X + that / who
It is / It was + la parte in risalto + that / who + il resto.
- Persone: usa who o that: It was my aunt who / that taught me. Non usare which per le persone.
- Cose, momenti, luoghi, motivi: la parola standard è that: It was in Hue that…, It was because of the rain that…. Non usare where / when / why dopo queste espressioni.
- It vuole sempre il verbo al singolare: It was my parents who… (non: It were). Ma il verbo dopo who / that concorda con X: It's the students who choose….
- Presente → It is / It's, passato → It was. Negative e domande: It wasn't me who…, Was it you who…?, Who was it that called?
- Con not until: It was not until midnight that the guests left = gli ospiti sono rimasti fino a mezzanotte, e solo allora sono andati via.
- Pronomi: It was me who… è la forma normale; It was I who…

It's the noise that keeps me awake, not the heat.

3.What … + be + X
What + frase significa “la cosa che”. Tutta la parte What… è un soggetto singolare, quindi vuole is / was, e l'informazione importante va alla fine.
| Dopo is / was viene… | Esempio |
|---|---|
| un sostantivo | What I miss most is my mum's fish soup. |
| una frase | What surprised me was how cheap everything was. |
| una forma base, con o senza to (dopo do / did) | What I did was (to) call the bank. |
What we're doing now is packing. |
Dopo What … do / did + is / was, di solito si usa la forma base senza to (What I did was call…); aggiungere to è corretto e un po' più formale. Non ripetere il soggetto: niente “What I did was I called…”.

4.All…, The thing… e le strutture rovesciate
Alcune altre strutture fanno lo stesso lavoro:
- All + frase significa “l'unica cosa…” e vuole il verbo al singolare: All I want is…. Dopo All you have to do is…, di solito si usa la forma base senza to.
- The thing (that)… / The only thing… / The reason (why)… / The person who… + is / was + la parte in risalto.
- Strutture rovesciate X + is + what / where / why…: That's what I mean. This is where I grew up. Qui where / when / why sono del tutto normali.

What I mean is…, The thing is…, What I'd like to know is…. Vedi la lezione “Formule del parlato”.
