What I need is…, It was X that…
Er zijn twee hoofdtypen: It + be + X + that / who… en What… + be + X. Uit Minh fixed the printer yesterday kun je elk deel naar voren halen:
| Nadruk op | Gekloofde zin |
|---|---|
| wie het deed | It was Minh who fixed the printer yesterday. |
| het ding | It was the printer that Minh fixed yesterday. |
| het tijdstip | It was yesterday that Minh fixed the printer. |
| de handeling | What Minh did yesterday was fix the printer. |
It was MINH who fixed it.
2.It + be + X + that / who
It is / It was + het deel met de nadruk + that / who + de rest.
- Personen: gebruik who of that — It was my aunt who / that taught me. Gebruik geen which voor personen.
- Dingen, tijden, plaatsen, redenen: het standaardwoord is that — It was in Hue that…, It was because of the rain that…. Gebruik na deze woordgroepen geen where / when / why.
- It krijgt altijd een werkwoord in het enkelvoud — It was my parents who… (niet: It were). Maar het werkwoord na who / that past zich aan X aan: It's the students who choose….
- Heden → It is / It's, verleden → It was. Ontkenningen en vragen: It wasn't me who…, Was it you who…?, Who was it that called?
- Met not until: It was not until midnight that the guests left = ze bleven tot middernacht en gingen pas toen weg.
- Voornaamwoorden: It was me who… is de normale vorm; It was I who… is heel formeel.
It was my grandfather who taught me to ride a motorbike.
Het was mijn opa die me leerde motorrijden.
It's the noise that keeps me awake, not the heat.

3.What … + be + X
| Voorbeeld |
|---|---|
| een zelfstandig naamwoord | What I miss most is my mum's fish soup. |
| een bijzin | What surprised me was how cheap everything was. |
| een grondvorm, met of zonder to (na do / did) | What I did was (to) call the bank. |
| -ing (als het eerste deel continuous is) | What we're doing now is packing. |
Na What … do / did + is / was gebruiken sprekers meestal de kale grondvorm (What I did was call…); met to is ook correct en iets formeler. Herhaal het onderwerp niet: niet “What I did was I called…”.

4.All…, The thing… en omgekeerde patronen
Een paar andere patronen doen hetzelfde werk:
- All + bijzin betekent “het enige…” en krijgt een werkwoord in het enkelvoud: All I want is…. Na All you have to do is… is de kale grondvorm gebruikelijk.
- The thing (that)… / The only thing… / The reason (why)… / The person who… + is / was + het deel met de nadruk.
- Omgekeerde patronen X + is + what / where / why…: That's what I mean. This is where I grew up. Hier zijn where / when / why heel normaal.

What I mean is…, The thing is…, What I'd like to know is… — zie de les “Zinsframes uit de spreektaal”.
