Cleft sentences

What I need is…, It was X that…

It + be + X + that / who… และ What… + be + X จากประโยค Minh fixed the printer yesterday เราเน้นแต่ละส่วนได้ดังนี้:

It was Minh who fixed the printer yesterday.
It was the printer that Minh fixed yesterday.
It was yesterday that Minh fixed the printer.
What Minh did yesterday was fix the printer.

It was MINH who fixed it.

2.It + be + X + that / who

It is / It was + ส่วนที่เน้น + that / who + ส่วนที่เหลือ ส่วนที่เน้นอาจเป็นคน สิ่งของ เวลา สถานที่ เหตุผล หรือวลีบุพบทก็ได้

  • คน: ใช้ who หรือ that — It was my aunt who / that taught me อย่าใช้ which กับคน
  • สิ่งของ เวลา สถานที่ เหตุผล: คำมาตรฐานคือ that — It was in Hue that…, It was because of the rain that… อย่าใช้ where / when / why หลังวลีเหล่านี้
  • It ใช้กริยาเอกพจน์เสมอ — It was my parents who… (ไม่ใช่: It were) แต่กริยาหลัง who / that ผันตาม X: It's the students who choose…
  • ปัจจุบัน → It is / It's อดีต → It was ปฏิเสธและคำถาม: It wasn't me who…, Was it you who…?, Who was it that called?
  • กับ not until: It was not until midnight that the guests left = แขกอยู่จนถึงเที่ยงคืน แล้วถึงค่อยกลับ
  • สรรพนาม: It was me who… เป็นรูปปกติ ส่วน It was I who…
  • It was my grandfather who taught me to ride a motorbike.

  • It's the noise that keeps me awake, not the heat.

  • It was in Hoi An that my parents first met.

  • It wasn't until I moved out that I learned to cook.

  • Was it you who left the window open?

3.What … + be + X

ทั้งส่วน What…

หลัง is / was เป็น…
What I miss most is my mum's fish soup.
What surprised me was how cheap everything was.
กริยารูปเดิม จะมี to หรือไม่ก็ได้ (หลัง do / did)What I did was (to) call the bank.
-ing (เมื่อส่วนแรกเป็นรูป continuous)What we're doing now is packing.

What … do / did + is / was ผู้พูดมักใช้กริยารูปเดิมไม่มี to (What I did was call…) ถ้าเติม to ก็ถูกและฟังทางการขึ้นเล็กน้อย อย่าใส่ประธานซ้ำ: ไม่ใช่ “What I did was I called…”

  • What I love about Hue is the slow pace of life.

  • What we need is more time, not more money.

  • What she did was call the airline directly.

  • What happened was the taxi never showed up.

4.All…, The thing…

และใช้กริยาเอกพจน์: All I want is… All you have to do is…
  • The thing (that)… / The only thing… / The reason (why)… / The person who… + is / was + ส่วนที่เน้น
X + is + what / where / why…: That's what I mean. This is where I grew up. ตรงนี้ใช้ where / when / why ได้ตามปกติ
  • All I want is a quiet weekend at home.

  • All you have to do is press this button.

  • The reason I called is that I need your help.

  • That's what I was trying to say!

  • This is where I grew up.

What I mean is…, The thing is…, What I'd like to know is…

    คน → who / that

It was because I was ill that I missed the exam.

  • It is the students who chooses the topic each week.

It is the students who choose the topic each week.

    กริยาหลัง who ผันตาม the students (พหูพจน์)

  • What I did was I called the police.

What I did was call the police.

    หลัง What … did was ใช้กริยารูปเดิม (มีหรือไม่มี to ก็ได้) — ไม่ต้องมีประธานตัวที่สอง

  • All I want for my birthday is a new phone.
  • What I love about Da Lat is the cool weather.
