Never have I…, Had I known… — กริยาช่วยมาก่อนประธานเพื่อเน้น
1.รูปประโยค
การสลับตำแหน่ง (inversion) เกิดขึ้นเมื่อย้ายคำหรือวลีที่มีความหมายปฏิเสธหรือจำกัด (never, rarely, only then, not until…) ไปไว้ต้นประโยคเพื่อเน้น ส่วนที่เหลือของประโยคจะใช้ลำดับแบบคำถาม: กริยาช่วย + ประธาน + กริยาหลัก ความหมายไม่เปลี่ยน — แค่ฟังดูเป็นทางการหรือหนักแน่นขึ้น

เลือกกริยาช่วยแบบเดียวกับตอนตั้งคำถามทุกประการ: ถ้ามีอยู่แล้ว (have, be, can, will, should…) ก็ย้ายมันไปข้างหน้า ถ้าเป็น Present Simple / Past Simple ให้ยืม do / does / did และใช้กริยาหลักเป็นรูปเดิม
สลับตำแหน่งเฉพาะเมื่อคำปฏิเสธอยู่ต้นประโยคเท่านั้น ถ้าอยู่ตำแหน่งปกติ ใช้ลำดับปกติ: I have never seen…, We rarely eat out และถ้า only / hardly ไปขยายประธาน ก็ไม่ต้องสลับ: Only my brother knows the password. Hardly anyone came.
2.หลังคำปฏิเสธและคำที่มีความหมายจำกัด
1. Never / Rarely / Seldom / At no time / Nowhere / Never again
Seldom have I felt so welcome in a new city.
น้อยครั้งที่ฉันจะรู้สึกได้รับการต้อนรับขนาดนี้ในเมืองใหม่
At no time did anyone tell us the flight was cancelled.

การแข่งขันเพิ่งเริ่มได้ไม่ทันไร ฝนก็เทลงมา (no sooner คู่กับ than ส่วน hardly คู่กับ when)
3. Only when / Only after / Only if / Only then / Not until — การสลับตำแหน่งเกิดในประโยคหลัก ไม่ใช่ในอนุประโยค when / after / if / until
Only when the lights came on did we see the mess.
พอไฟติดเท่านั้นแหละ เราถึงได้เห็นความเละเทะ
Not until I moved abroad did I appreciate my mum's cooking.

4. Little / Under no circumstances / On no account / Not only
Little did he know that his friends were planning a surprise.

On no account should you share your password.
ไม่ว่ากรณีใดก็ตาม คุณไม่ควรบอกรหัสผ่านให้ใครรู้
Not only was the hotel noisy, but it was also dirty.

3.สลับตำแหน่งแทน if
ในภาษาอังกฤษแบบทางการ ตัด if ออกแล้ววาง had / should / were ไว้หน้าประธานได้ ใช้ได้แค่สามคำนี้เท่านั้น ดูบทเรียน “เงื่อนไขแบบที่ 3” และ “เงื่อนไขแบบที่ 2” ด้วย

ระดับภาษาต่างกัน: Should you… พบบ่อยมากในอีเมลธุรกิจและประกาศ Had I known… ใช้ในภาษาพูดได้ด้วย ส่วน Were I… ค่อนข้างทางการ ถ้าใช้ในบทสนทนาจะฟังดูเป็นภาษาหนังสือ
ในรูปปฏิเสธ not อยู่หลังประธาน และไม่ใช้รูปย่อ: Had it not rained… / Were it not for… — ไม่ใช่ “Hadn't it rained…”
4.การสลับตำแหน่งในภาษาพูดทุกวัน
การสลับตำแหน่งไม่ได้เป็นทางการเสมอไป บางแบบได้ยินทุกวัน:
I'm starving. — So am I.
ฉันหิวจะตายอยู่แล้ว — ฉันก็เหมือนกัน (ดูบทเรียน “So do I” / “I think so”)
Lan didn't enjoy the film, and neither did her husband.
ลานไม่ชอบหนังเรื่องนั้น สามีของเธอก็ไม่ชอบเหมือนกัน

ในบทสนทนา ลำดับปกติ (I've never seen anything like it) ฟังเป็นธรรมชาติกว่า การสลับตำแหน่งแบบทางการเวลาคุยเล่นจะฟังดูเกินจริงหรือเหมือนพูดเล่น ส่วนในเรียงความ IELTS หรือจดหมายทางการ การสลับตำแหน่งที่วางถูกที่สักหนึ่งหรือสองครั้งจะทำให้งานเขียนหนักแน่นขึ้น — แค่อย่าใช้มากเกินไป
6.ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย
