Never have I…, Had I known… —
1.형태
도치는 부정이나 제한의 뜻을 가진 단어나 어구(never, rarely, only then, not until…)
|---|---|
| I have never tasted coffee this strong. | Never have I tasted coffee this strong. |
| He seldom calls his brother. | Seldom does he call his brother. |
| I didn't realise until later. | Not until later did I realise. |
| The film had hardly begun when my phone rang. | Hardly had the film begun when my phone rang. |
| You must not touch this switch under any circumstances. | Under no circumstances must you touch this switch. |
조동사는 의문문을 만들 때와 똑같이 고릅니다: 이미 조동사(have, be, can, will, should…)
I have never seen…, We rarely eat out. Only my brother knows the password. Hardly anyone came.
1. Never / Rarely / Seldom / At no time / Nowhere / Never again
Seldom have I felt so welcome in a new city.
At no time did anyone tell us the flight was cancelled.
Never again will I lend him money.
Nowhere else can you see so many motorbikes at once.
2. Hardly / Scarcely … when과 No sooner … than — 한 일이 일어나자마자 다른 일이 일어남, 보통 had + V3와 함께
Hardly had I closed my eyes when the alarm went off.
No sooner had the match started than the rain came down.
(no sooner는 than과, hardly는 when과 짝)
3. Only when / Only after / Only if / Only then / Not until — 도치는 when / after / if / until 절 안이 아니라 주절에서 일어남
Only when the lights came on did we see the mess.
Not until I moved abroad did I appreciate my mum's cooking.
Only if you book early will you get a discount.
Only then did I realise how lucky I was.
4. Little / Under no circumstances / On no account / Not only
Little did he know that his friends were planning a surprise.
On no account should you share your password.
Not only was the hotel noisy, but it was also dirty.
(「“not only … but also”」 레슨 참고)
3.if 대신 쓰는 도치
격식 있는 영어에서는 if를 빼고 had / should / were를 주어 앞에 둘 수 있습니다.
|---|---|---|
| 3형식: had | If we had left earlier, we would have caught the train. | Had we left earlier, we would have caught the train. |
| 2형식: were | If the shop were closer, I'd go there more often. | Were the shop closer, I'd go there more often. |
| 1형식: should | If you have any questions, please contact us. | Should you have any questions, please contact us. |
If it hadn't been for your help, we'd have failed. | Had it not been for your help, we'd have failed. |
Were I…
Had it not rained… / Were it not for… — “Hadn't it rained…”
I'm starving. — So am I.
(「“So do I” / “I think so”」 레슨 참고)
Lan didn't enjoy the film, and neither did her husband.
I can't swim. — Nor can I.
Look, here comes the bus!
Here it comes(Here comes it이 아님).
|---|---|
So am I, Neither did I, Nor can I, Here comes the bus |
Never again will I…, Not only…, Little did I know…, Had I known… |
Rarely / Seldom…, At no time…, Only when / after…, Not until…, Hardly … when, No sooner … than |
Should you…, Under no circumstances…, On no account… |
Were I…, Scarcely had…, So + adjective + was … that… |
(I've never seen anything like it)이 더 자연스럽고, 수다 중에 격식 있는 도치를 쓰면 과장되거나 장난스럽게 들립니다.
Never I will forget your kindness.Never will I forget your kindness.
Rarely we eat out during the week.Rarely do we eat out during the week.
Only after I paid did I realised the price was wrong.Only after I paid did I realise the price was wrong.

Hadn't it rained, we would have gone to the beach.Had it not rained, we would have gone to the beach.

Hardly … when, No sooner … than입니다.
