Inversão
AvançadoInversion
Forma e uso
Never have I…, Had I known… — auxiliar antes do sujeito para dar ênfase
1.Forma
|---|---|
| I have never tasted coffee this strong. | Never have I tasted coffee this strong. |
| He seldom calls his brother. | Seldom does he call his brother. |
| I didn't realise until later. | Not until later did I realise. |
| The film had hardly begun when my phone rang. | Hardly had the film begun when my phone rang. |
| You must not touch this switch under any circumstances. | Under no circumstances must you touch this switch. |
Escolha o auxiliar exatamente como faria numa pergunta: se já existe um (have, be, can, will, should…), mova-o; no presente simples / passado simples, pegue emprestado do / does / did e coloque o verbo principal na forma base.
Na posição normal, mantenha a ordem normal: I have never seen…, We rarely eat out. E quando only / hardly pertence ao sujeito, não há inversão: Only my brother knows the password. Hardly anyone came.
2.Depois de palavras negativas e restritivas
1. Never / Rarely / Seldom / At no time / Nowhere / Never again
Seldom have I felt so welcome in a new city.
Raramente me senti tão bem recebido numa cidade nova.
At no time did anyone tell us the flight was cancelled.
Never again will I lend him money.
Nunca mais vou emprestar dinheiro para ele.
Nowhere else can you see so many motorbikes at once.
2. Hardly / Scarcely … when e No sooner … than — uma coisa acontece logo depois da outra, geralmente com had + V3
Hardly had I closed my eyes when the alarm went off.
Mal eu tinha fechado os olhos, o despertador tocou.
No sooner had the match started than the rain came down.
Mal a partida tinha começado, a chuva desabou. (no sooner vai com than, hardly vai com when)
3. Only when / Only after / Only if / Only then / Not until — a inversão fica na oração principal, e não dentro da oração com when / after / if / until
Only when the lights came on did we see the mess.
Not until I moved abroad did I appreciate my mum's cooking.
Only if you book early will you get a discount.
Only then did I realise how lucky I was.
4. Little / Under no circumstances / On no account / Not only
Little did he know that his friends were planning a surprise.
On no account should you share your password.
Not only was the hotel noisy, but it was also dirty.
(veja a lição “Not only … but also”)
3.Inversão no lugar de if
No inglês formal, você pode tirar o if e colocar had / should / were antes do sujeito. Só essas três palavras funcionam assim. Veja também as lições “Terceira condicional” e “Segunda condicional”.
| Tipo | Com if | Invertida |
|---|---|---|
| Terceira: had | If we had left earlier, we would have caught the train. | Had we left earlier, we would have caught the train. |
| Segunda: were | If the shop were closer, I'd go there more often. | Were the shop closer, I'd go there more often. |
| Primeira: should | If you have any questions, please contact us. | Should you have any questions, please contact us. |
| Negativa | If it hadn't been for your help, we'd have failed. | Had it not been for your help, we'd have failed. |
Elas diferem no registro: Should you… é muito comum em e-mails profissionais e avisos; Had I known… funciona bem também na fala; Were I… é bastante formal e soa livresco numa conversa.
Na negativa, o not vem depois do sujeito e não é contraído: Had it not rained… / Were it not for… — e não “Hadn't it rained…”.
4.Inversão na fala do dia a dia
Nem toda inversão é formal. Alguns tipos aparecem todos os dias:
I'm starving. — So am I.
Estou morrendo de fome. — Eu também. (veja a lição “‘So do I’ / ‘I think so’”)
Lan didn't enjoy the film, and neither did her husband.
I can't swim. — Nor can I.
Eu não sei nadar. — Nem eu.
Look, here comes the bus!
5.Registro
| Registro | Padrões |
|---|---|
| Fala do dia a dia | So am I, Neither did I, Nor can I, Here comes the bus |
| Enfático, funciona bem também na fala | Never again will I…, Not only…, Little did I know…, Had I known… |
| Formal: escrita, notícias, discursos | Rarely / Seldom…, At no time…, Only when / after…, Not until…, Hardly … when, No sooner … than |
| Avisos, cartas comerciais | Should you…, Under no circumstances…, On no account… |
| Muito formal, literário | Were I…, Scarcely had…, So + adjective + was … that… |
6.Erros comuns
Never I will forget your kindness.Never will I forget your kindness.
Never no início → inverta o auxiliar.
Rarely we eat out during the week.Rarely do we eat out during the week.
O presente simples pega emprestado do para inverter.
Only after I paid did I realised the price was wrong.Only after I paid did I realise the price was wrong.
Depois de did, use a forma base.
Not until I got home I realised I had lost my wallet. Not until I got home did I realise I had lost my wallet.
Quem fica invertida é a oração principal.
Hadn't it rained, we would have gone to the beach.Had it not rained, we would have gone to the beach.
Hardly had we started eating than the lights went out.Hardly had we started eating when the lights went out.
Hardly … when, no sooner … than.
Exemplos
- Never have I seen such a beautiful sunset.
- Rarely is the bus on time in the rainy season.
- Hardly had I sat down when the phone rang.
- Not until I got home did I realise I had lost my wallet.
