Forma e uso
What I need is…, It was X that…
Há dois tipos principais: It + be + X + that / who… e What… + be + X. A partir de Minh fixed the printer yesterday, você pode destacar cada parte:
| Foco em | Frase clivada |
|---|---|
| quem fez | It was Minh who fixed the printer yesterday. |
| a coisa | It was the printer that Minh fixed yesterday. |
| o momento | It was yesterday that Minh fixed the printer. |
| a ação | What Minh did yesterday was fix the printer. |
Ao falar uma frase clivada, dê ênfase à parte em foco: It was MINH who fixed it. A estrutura e a entonação trabalham juntas.
2.It + be + X + that / who
It is / It was + a parte em foco + that / who + o resto.
- Pessoas: use who ou that — It was my aunt who / that taught me. Não use which para pessoas.
- Coisas, momentos, lugares, motivos: a palavra padrão é that — It was in Hue that…, It was because of the rain that…. Não use where / when / why depois dessas expressões.
- It sempre leva o verbo no singular — It was my parents who… (não: It were). Mas o verbo depois de who / that concorda com X: It's the students who choose….
- Presente → It is / It's, passado → It was. Negativas e perguntas: It wasn't me who…, Was it you who…?, Who was it that called?
- Com not until: It was not until midnight that the guests left = os convidados ficaram até a meia-noite, e só então foram embora.
- Pronomes: It was me who… é a forma normal; It was I who… é muito formal.
It was my grandfather who taught me to ride a motorbike.
It's the noise that keeps me awake, not the heat.
It was in Hoi An that my parents first met.
It wasn't until I moved out that I learned to cook.
Was it you who left the window open?
Foi você que deixou a janela aberta?
3.What … + be + X
What + oração significa “a coisa que”. Toda a parte What… é um sujeito singular, então leva is / was, e a informação importante fica no final.
| Depois de is / was vem… | Exemplo |
|---|---|
| um substantivo | What I miss most is my mum's fish soup. |
| uma oração | What surprised me was how cheap everything was. |
| uma forma base, com ou sem to (depois de do / did) | What I did was (to) call the bank. |
| -ing (quando a primeira parte está na forma contínua) | What we're doing now is packing. |
Depois de What … do / did + is / was, os falantes geralmente usam a forma base sem to (What I did was call…); acrescentar to também está certo e é um pouco mais formal. Não repita o sujeito: nada de “What I did was I called…”.
What I love about Hue is the slow pace of life.
What we need is more time, not more money.
What she did was call the airline directly.
What happened was the taxi never showed up.
4.All…, The thing… e estruturas invertidas
Algumas outras estruturas fazem o mesmo papel:
- All + oração significa “a única coisa…” e leva o verbo no singular: All I want is…. Depois de All you have to do is…, o normal é a forma base sem to.
- The thing (that)… / The only thing… / The reason (why)… / The person who… + is / was + a parte em foco.
- Estruturas invertidas X + is + what / where / why…: That's what I mean. This is where I grew up. Aqui where / when / why são perfeitamente normais.
All I want is a quiet weekend at home.
All you have to do is press this button.
The reason I called is that I need your help.
(na fala você também vai ouvir is because; a escrita formal prefere is that)

This is where I grew up.
Foi aqui que eu cresci.
Muitos jeitos conhecidos de começar uma frase na fala são, na verdade, frases clivadas: What I mean is…, The thing is…, What I'd like to know is…
