Lição 120 · Etapa 10: Estruturas avançadas
Orações com particípio
AvançadoParticiple clauses
Forma e uso
Having finished…, Looking at…
| Forma | Sentido | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| V-ing | ativo; ao mesmo tempo, logo em seguida, ou um motivo | Hearing the doorbell, she ran downstairs. |
| Having + V3 | ativo; terminou antes da ação principal | Having packed her bags, Linh called a taxi. |
| V3 (particípio passado) | passivo | Built in 1926, the station still has its original clock. |
| Having been + V3 | passivo, terminou antes | Having been warned about the traffic, we left early. |
| Not + particípio | negativo | Not knowing the way, we asked a taxi driver. |
Uma oração com particípio no início é seguida de vírgula, sem and / so / but entre as duas partes: Picking up my bag, I ran… (não: Picking up my bag, and I ran…).
2.Quando usar
She sat by the window reading a novel.
Walking home, I bumped into an old classmate.
2. Algo acontece durante outra ação
He cut his finger chopping onions.
Ele cortou o dedo picando cebola. (= while he was chopping)
Don't text while driving.
Não mande mensagem enquanto dirige.
Having locked the door, he realised his keys were still inside.
After finishing dinner, we went for a walk by the lake.
4. Um motivo — no lugar de because / as / since
Feeling sick, Nam stayed home from school.
Not having a car, we rely on buses to get around.
Having grown up by the sea, Huy is a great swimmer.
5. Sentido passivo — V3 ou Having been + V3
Written in simple English, the book is perfect for learners.
Shocked by the news, she couldn't say a word.
Having been rejected twice, he almost gave up.
Na conversa, as pessoas geralmente usam uma oração completa: When I got home…, Because I felt sick….
- After / Before / Since / While / When + -ing: after finishing, before leaving, since moving here, while waiting, when using. After, before e since também são preposições, por isso vêm seguidas de -ing (veja a lição “Preposição + -ing”).
- having + V3 é possível depois de after (after having finished), mas geralmente é desnecessário, porque after já mostra a ordem.
- If / Unless / Once / When / Although / Until + V3 dá sentido passivo — muito comum em rótulos e instruções.
- Não coloque um V2 / V3 ativo logo depois da conjunção: after finished ✗, when arrived ✗ → after finishing, when we arrived / arriving.
Turn off the lights before leaving the room.
Since moving to Da Nang, she has taken up surfing.
Once opened, keep the jar in the fridge.
(= once it has been opened)
Although injured, he finished the race.
Mesmo machucado, ele terminou a corrida.
4.Orações relativas reduzidas
Um particípio também pode vir depois de um substantivo, substituindo who / which + verbo (veja a lição “Orações relativas”): -ing é ativo, V3 é passivo.
The woman sitting next to me kept talking on the phone.
(= who was sitting)
Most of the phones sold here are second-hand.
(= which are sold)
Anyone wanting a refund should keep the receipt.
Quem quiser reembolso deve guardar o recibo.
The old bridge, built in 1902, is still in use.
Mas para uma única ação concluída no passado, mantenha a oração relativa: the man who stole my bag — “the man stealing my bag” significaria que ele estava pegando a bolsa naquele exato momento.
| Corrigido |
|---|---|---|
| Driving along the coast, the sea looked beautiful. | o mar estava dirigindo | As we drove along the coast, the sea looked beautiful. |
| Having finished my homework, my mum let me watch TV. | minha mãe fez a lição de casa | Having finished my homework, I was allowed to watch TV. |
| Cooked for too long, I couldn't eat the noodles. | eu fui cozido por tempo demais | Cooked for too long, the noodles were too soft to eat. |
Exceção: algumas expressões fixas funcionam como advérbios e não precisam de um sujeito correspondente: generally speaking, strictly speaking, judging by / from, considering, given, assuming. Por exemplo: Judging by the clouds, it's going to rain.
6.Erros comuns
After finished lunch, we went back to work. After finishing lunch, we went back to work. / Having finished lunch, …
After pede -ing; ou use having + V3 sem after.
Having took the wrong bus, we arrived late at the wedding.Having taken the wrong bus, we arrived late at the wedding.
Having + V3 (taken), e não o passado simples.
Having bitten by a dog as a child, Hung is afraid of dogs.Having been bitten by a dog as a child, Hung is afraid of dogs.
Opened the fridge, I found nothing to eat.Opening the fridge, I found nothing to eat.
Fui eu que abri → -ing ativo; V3 é passivo.
Picking up my bag, and I ran to the bus stop.Picking up my bag, I ran to the bus stop.
When arrived at the station, we called a taxi. When we arrived at the station, we called a taxi. / Arriving at the station, …
