Having finished…, Looking at…

Hearing the doorbell, she ran downstairs.
Having packed her bags, Linh called a taxi.
Built in 1926, the station still has its original clock.
Having been + V3수동, 먼저 끝남Having been warned about the traffic, we left early.
Not + 분사부정Not knowing the way, we asked a taxi driver.

Picking up my bag, I ran…(Picking up my bag, and I ran…

  • She sat by the window reading a novel.

  • Walking home, I bumped into an old classmate.

  • He cut his finger chopping onions.

(= while he was chopping)

  • Don't text while driving.

  • Having locked the door, he realised his keys were still inside.

  • After finishing dinner, we went for a walk by the lake.

4. 이유 — because / as / since 대신

  • Feeling sick, Nam stayed home from school.

  • Not having a car, we rely on buses to get around.

  • Having grown up by the sea, Huy is a great swimmer.

Having been + V3

  • Written in simple English, the book is perfect for learners.

  • Shocked by the news, she couldn't say a word.

  • Having been rejected twice, he almost gave up.

When I got home…, Because I felt sick…. 주절 뒤에 오는 -ing 절(sat there reading, cut his finger chopping onions)은 말할 때도 자연스럽습니다.

  • After / Before / Since / While / When + -ing: after finishing, before leaving, since moving here, while waiting, when using. after, before, since는 전치사이기도 해서 뒤에 -ing가 옵니다(「전치사 + -ing」 레슨 참고).
  • after 뒤에 having + V3를 쓸 수도 있지만(after having finished), after가 이미 순서를 보여 주기 때문에 보통은 필요 없습니다.
  • If / Unless / Once / When / Although / Until + V3
  • 접속사 바로 뒤에 능동의 V2 / V3를 두지 마세요: after finished ✗, when arrived ✗ → after finishing, when we arrived / arriving.
  • Turn off the lights before leaving the room.

  • Since moving to Da Nang, she has taken up surfing.

  • Once opened, keep the jar in the fridge.

(= once it has been opened)

  • Although injured, he finished the race.

  • The woman sitting next to me kept talking on the phone.

(= who was sitting)

  • Most of the phones sold here are second-hand.

(= which are sold)

  • Anyone wanting a refund should keep the receipt.

  • The old bridge, built in 1902, is still in use.

여기서 -ing 형태가 진행 중인 행동만 나타내는 것은 아닙니다: a road connecting two villages(= which connects). 하지만 과거에 한 번 일어나고 끝난 행동에는 관계절을 그대로 쓰세요: the man who stole my bag — “the man stealing my bag”이라고 하면 그 남자가 바로 그 순간 가방을 가져가고 있었다는 뜻이 됩니다.

Driving along the coast, the sea looked beautiful. As we drove along the coast, the sea looked beautiful.
Having finished my homework, my mum let me watch TV. Having finished my homework, I was allowed to watch TV.
Cooked for too long, I couldn't eat the noodles. Cooked for too long, the noodles were too soft to eat.

예외: 부사처럼 쓰이는 몇몇 고정 표현은 주어가 일치하지 않아도 됩니다: generally speaking, strictly speaking, judging by / from, considering, given, assuming. 예: Judging by the clouds, it's going to rain.
