Lección 120 · Etapa 10: Estructuras avanzadas
Oraciones de participio
AvanzadoParticiple clauses
Forma y uso
Having finished…, Looking at…
| Forma | Significado | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| V-ing | activa; al mismo tiempo, justo después, o una causa | Hearing the doorbell, she ran downstairs. |
| Having + V3 | activa; terminada antes de la acción principal | Having packed her bags, Linh called a taxi. |
| V3 (participio) | pasiva | Built in 1926, the station still has its original clock. |
| Having been + V3 | pasiva, terminada antes | Having been warned about the traffic, we left early. |
| Not + participio | negativa | Not knowing the way, we asked a taxi driver. |
Una oración de participio al principio va seguida de una coma, sin and / so / but entre las dos partes: Picking up my bag, I ran… (no: Picking up my bag, and I ran…).
2.Cuándo se usa
She sat by the window reading a novel.
Walking home, I bumped into an old classmate.
2. Algo que pasa durante otra acción
He cut his finger chopping onions.
Se cortó el dedo picando cebolla. (= while he was chopping)
Don't text while driving.
No escribas mensajes mientras conduces.
Having locked the door, he realised his keys were still inside.
After finishing dinner, we went for a walk by the lake.
4. Una causa: en lugar de because / as / since
Feeling sick, Nam stayed home from school.
Not having a car, we rely on buses to get around.
Having grown up by the sea, Huy is a great swimmer.
5. Significado pasivo: V3 o Having been + V3
Written in simple English, the book is perfect for learners.
Shocked by the news, she couldn't say a word.
Having been rejected twice, he almost gave up.
Al hablar, se suele usar una oración completa: When I got home…, Because I felt sick….
- After / Before / Since / While / When + -ing: after finishing, before leaving, since moving here, while waiting, when using. After, before y since también son preposiciones, así que van seguidas de -ing (mira la lección “Preposición + -ing”).
- having + V3 es posible después de after (after having finished), pero normalmente no hace falta, porque after ya indica el orden.
- If / Unless / Once / When / Although / Until + V3 da un significado pasivo; es muy común en etiquetas e instrucciones.
- No pongas un V2 / V3 activo justo después de la conjunción: after finished ✗, when arrived ✗ → after finishing, when we arrived / arriving.
Turn off the lights before leaving the room.
Since moving to Da Nang, she has taken up surfing.
Once opened, keep the jar in the fridge.
(= once it has been opened)
Although injured, he finished the race.
The woman sitting next to me kept talking on the phone.
(= who was sitting)
Most of the phones sold here are second-hand.
(= which are sold)
Anyone wanting a refund should keep the receipt.
The old bridge, built in 1902, is still in use.
| Corregido |
|---|---|---|
| Driving along the coast, the sea looked beautiful. | el mar iba conduciendo | As we drove along the coast, the sea looked beautiful. |
| Having finished my homework, my mum let me watch TV. | mi madre hizo los deberes | Having finished my homework, I was allowed to watch TV. |
| Cooked for too long, I couldn't eat the noodles. | a mí me cocieron demasiado tiempo | Cooked for too long, the noodles were too soft to eat. |
Excepción: algunas expresiones fijas funcionan como adverbios y no necesitan un sujeto que coincida: generally speaking, strictly speaking, judging by / from, considering, given, assuming. Por ejemplo: Judging by the clouds, it's going to rain.
6.Errores comunes
After finished lunch, we went back to work. After finishing lunch, we went back to work. / Having finished lunch, …
After va con -ing; o usa having + V3 sin after.
