Forma e uso
Having finished…, Looking at…
| Forma | Significato | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| V-ing | attivo; nello stesso momento, subito dopo, o un motivo | Hearing the doorbell, she ran downstairs. |
| Having + V3 | attivo; concluso prima dell'azione principale | Having packed her bags, Linh called a taxi. |
| V3 (participio passato) | passivo | Built in 1926, the station still has its original clock. |
| Having been + V3 | passivo, concluso prima | Having been warned about the traffic, we left early. |
| Not + participio | negativo | Not knowing the way, we asked a taxi driver. |
Una proposizione participiale all'inizio è seguita da una virgola, senza and / so / but tra le due parti: Picking up my bag, I ran… (non: Picking up my bag, and I ran…).
2.Quando si usa
She sat by the window reading a novel.
Walking home, I bumped into an old classmate.
2. Una cosa succede durante un'altra azione
He cut his finger chopping onions.
(= while he was chopping)
Don't text while driving.
Non scrivere messaggi mentre guidi.
Having locked the door, he realised his keys were still inside.
After finishing dinner, we went for a walk by the lake.
4. Un motivo: al posto di because / as / since
Feeling sick, Nam stayed home from school.
Sentendosi male, Nam è rimasto a casa da scuola.
Not having a car, we rely on buses to get around.
Having grown up by the sea, Huy is a great swimmer.
5. Significato passivo: V3 o Having been + V3
Written in simple English, the book is perfect for learners.
Shocked by the news, she couldn't say a word.
Having been rejected twice, he almost gave up.
3.Congiunzione + participio
- After / Before / Since / While / When + -ing: after finishing, before leaving, since moving here, while waiting, when using. After, before e since sono anche preposizioni, quindi sono seguite da -ing (vedi la lezione “Preposizione + -ing”).
- having + V3 è possibile dopo after (after having finished), ma di solito non serve, perché after indica già l'ordine.
- If / Unless / Once / When / Although / Until + V3 dà un significato passivo: molto comune sulle etichette e nelle istruzioni.
- Non mettere un V2 / V3 attivo subito dopo la congiunzione: after finished ✗, when arrived ✗ → after finishing, when we arrived / arriving.
Turn off the lights before leaving the room.
Since moving to Da Nang, she has taken up surfing.
Once opened, keep the jar in the fridge.
(= once it has been opened)
Although injured, he finished the race.
Anche se infortunato, ha finito la gara.
4.Frasi relative ridotte
The woman sitting next to me kept talking on the phone.
(= who was sitting)
Most of the phones sold here are second-hand.
(= which are sold)
Anyone wanting a refund should keep the receipt.
The old bridge, built in 1902, is still in use.
“The man stealing my bag” vorrebbe dire che me la stava prendendo in quel preciso momento.
| Corretto |
|---|---|---|
| Driving along the coast, the sea looked beautiful. | il mare stesse guidando | As we drove along the coast, the sea looked beautiful. |
| Having finished my homework, my mum let me watch TV. | la mamma abbia fatto i compiti | Having finished my homework, I was allowed to watch TV. |
| Cooked for too long, I couldn't eat the noodles. | io sia stato cotto troppo a lungo | Cooked for too long, the noodles were too soft to eat. |
Eccezione: alcune espressioni fisse funzionano come avverbi e non hanno bisogno di un soggetto corrispondente: generally speaking, strictly speaking, judging by / from, considering, given, assuming. Per esempio: Judging by the clouds, it's going to rain.
6.Errori comuni
After finished lunch, we went back to work. After finishing lunch, we went back to work. / Having finished lunch, …
After vuole -ing; oppure usa having + V3 senza after.
