Forma y uso
What I need is…, It was X that…
Hay dos tipos principales: It + be + X + that / who…
|---|---|
| quién lo hizo | It was Minh who fixed the printer yesterday. |
| la cosa | It was the printer that Minh fixed yesterday. |
| el momento | It was yesterday that Minh fixed the printer. |
| la acción | What Minh did yesterday was fix the printer. |
It was MINH who fixed it. La estructura y el acento trabajan juntos.
2.It + be + X + that / who
It is / It was + la parte en foco + that / who + el resto.
- Personas: usa who o that: It was my aunt who / that taught me. No uses which para personas.
- Cosas, momentos, lugares, razones: la palabra estándar es that: It was in Hue that…, It was because of the rain that…. No uses where / when / why después de estas expresiones.
- It siempre lleva el verbo en singular: It was my parents who… (no: It were). Pero el verbo que va después de who / that concuerda con X: It's the students who choose….
- Presente → It is / It's, pasado → It was. Negativas y preguntas: It wasn't me who…, Was it you who…?, Who was it that called?
- Con not until: It was not until midnight that the guests left = los invitados se quedaron hasta medianoche y solo entonces se fueron.
- Pronombres: It was me who… es la forma normal; It was I who… es muy formal.
It was my grandfather who taught me to ride a motorbike.
It's the noise that keeps me awake, not the heat.

Was it you who left the window open?
¿Fuiste tú quien dejó la ventana abierta?
3.What … + be + X
| Después de is / was va… | Ejemplo |
|---|---|
| un sustantivo | What I miss most is my mum's fish soup. |
| una oración | What surprised me was how cheap everything was. |
| un verbo en forma base, con o sin to (después de do / did) | What I did was (to) call the bank. |
| -ing (cuando la primera parte es continua) | What we're doing now is packing. |
Después de What … do / did + is / was, normalmente se usa la forma base sola (What I did was call…); añadir to también es correcto y un poco más formal. No repitas el sujeto: no “What I did was I called…”.
What I love about Hue is the slow pace of life.
What we need is more time, not more money.

4.All…, The thing… y estructuras al revés
Algunas otras estructuras hacen lo mismo:
- All + oración significa “lo único que…” y lleva el verbo en singular: All I want is…. Después de All you have to do is…, lo normal es la forma base sola.
- The thing (that)… / The only thing… / The reason (why)… / The person who… + is / was + la parte en foco.
- Estructuras al revés X + is + what / where / why…: That's what I mean. This is where I grew up. Aquí where / when / why son totalmente normales.
All I want is a quiet weekend at home.

Muchas formas habituales de empezar una frase al hablar son en realidad oraciones escindidas: What I mean is…, The thing is…, What I'd like to know is…; mira la lección “Moldes de frase del habla”.
5.Errores comunes
