分裂文

強調構文（分裂文）は、ふつうの文を2つに分けて、ある情報にスポットライトを当てる文です — たいていは新しい情報や、聞き手の思い込みの訂正です。主な形は2つあります：It + be + X + that / who… と What… + be + X です。Minh fixed the printer yesterday から、それぞれの部分に焦点を当てられます：

💡強調構文を言うときは、焦点の部分を強く読みます：It was MINH who fixed it. 文の枠組みと強勢がセットで働きます。

It is / It was + 焦点の部分 + that / who + 残りの部分。 焦点には人、物、時、場所、理由、前置詞句が入ります。

• 人：who か that を使います — It was my aunt who / that taught me. 人に which は使いません。
• 物・時・場所・理由：標準的なのは that です — It was in Hue that…、It was because of the rain that…。これらの語句の後ろに where / when / why は使いません。
• It の動詞はいつも単数です — It was my parents who…（It were ではない）。ただし who / that の後ろの動詞は X に合わせます：It's the students who choose…。
• 現在 → It is / It's、過去 → It was。否定文と疑問文：It wasn't me who…、Was it you who…?、Who was it that called?
• not until と一緒に：It was not until midnight that the guests left = 客は真夜中までいて、そこでやっと帰った。
• 代名詞：It was me who… がふつうの形で、It was I who… はとても改まった言い方です。

• It was my grandfather who taught me to ride a motorbike.

  私にバイクの乗り方を教えてくれたのは祖父でした。

• It's the noise that keeps me awake, not the heat.

  私を眠れなくしているのは暑さではなく、騒音です。

• It was in Hoi An that my parents first met.

  両親が初めて出会ったのは、ホイアンでした。

• It wasn't until I moved out that I learned to cook.

  一人暮らしを始めて初めて、料理を覚えました。

• Was it you who left the window open?

  窓を開けっぱなしにしたのはあなたですか？

What + 節 は「〜すること・〜するもの」という意味です。What… の部分全体が単数の主語なので is / was を使い、大事な情報は最後に来ます。この形は話し言葉でとてもよく使われ、聞き手に要点を受け止める準備をさせます。

What … do / did + is / was の後ろでは、ふつう to のない原形を使います（What I did was call…）。to をつけても正しく、少し改まった言い方になります。主語をくり返さないでください：「What I did was I called…」ではありません。

• What I love about Hue is the slow pace of life.

  フエで好きなのは、ゆったりした生活のペースです。

• What we need is more time, not more money.

  私たちに必要なのは、もっと多くのお金ではなく、もっと多くの時間です。

• What she did was call the airline directly.

  彼女がしたのは、航空会社に直接電話することでした。

• What happened was the taxi never showed up.

  何があったかというと、タクシーが結局来なかったんです。（話し言葉で話を始めるときによく使う言い方）

ほかにも同じ働きをする形がいくつかあります：

• All + 節 は「〜する唯一のこと」という意味で、単数の動詞を使います：All I want is…。All you have to do is… の後ろは、to のない原形がふつうです。
• The thing (that)… / The only thing… / The reason (why)… / The person who… + is / was + 焦点の部分。
• 逆向きの形 X + is + what / where / why…：That's what I mean. This is where I grew up. この場合の where / when / why はまったく問題ありません。

• All I want is a quiet weekend at home.

  私が欲しいのは、家で過ごす静かな週末だけです。

• All you have to do is press this button.

  このボタンを押すだけでいいですよ。

• The reason I called is that I need your help.

  電話したのは、あなたに手伝ってほしいからです。（話し言葉では is because もよく聞くが、改まった書き言葉では is that がよい）

• That's what I was trying to say!

  それこそ私が言いたかったことです！

• This is where I grew up.

  ここが私の育った場所です。

💡話し言葉でおなじみの文の始め方の多くは、実は強調構文です：What I mean is…、The thing is…、What I'd like to know is… — レッスン「話し言葉の文型」を参照してください。

• ✗What I need it is a cup of coffee.

  ✓What I need is a cup of coffee.

  What I need がすでに主語です。it は余分な主語です。

• ✗It was my parents which paid for the trip.

  ✓It was my parents who paid for the trip.

  人 → who / that です。

• ✗It was in Da Nang where I learned to surf.

  ✓It was in Da Nang that I learned to surf.

  強調構文では、場所を表す語句の後ろに that を使います。

• ✗It was because I was ill why I missed the exam.

  ✓It was because I was ill that I missed the exam.

  理由にも that を使います。

• ✗It is the students who chooses the topic each week.

  ✓It is the students who choose the topic each week.

  who の後ろの動詞は the students（複数）に合わせます。

• ✗What I did was I called the police.

  ✓What I did was call the police.

  What … did was の後ろは動詞の原形（to はあってもなくてもよい）です — 2つ目の主語は置きません。
