“not only … but also”

not only A but (also) B는 첫 번째 내용 A에 두 번째 내용 B를 더하는 표현이며, B가 더 강하거나 더 놀라운 내용인 경우가 많습니다. A와 B에는 형용사, 명사, 동사, 전치사구, 절 전체가 올 수 있습니다.

💡not only는 but과 짝을 이룹니다: not only … but (also) … — “not only … and also”가 아닙니다. 이 자리에 “and”와 같은 말을 쓰는 언어의 학습자들이 이 실수를 자주 합니다.

not only 뒤에 오는 것과 but also 뒤에 오는 것은 같은 종류, 같은 형태여야 합니다: 형용사는 형용사와, 동사는 같은 시제의 동사와, to부정사는 to부정사와. not only는 첫 번째 부분 바로 앞에 둡니다.

• Minh not only fixed my bike but also cleaned it.

  민은 제 자전거를 고쳐 줬을 뿐만 아니라 깨끗이 닦아 주기까지 했어요. (fixed … cleaned: 둘 다 과거형)

• I enjoy not only cooking but also eating.

  저는 요리하는 것뿐만 아니라 먹는 것도 좋아해요.

• She wants not only to travel but also to work abroad.

  그녀는 여행뿐만 아니라 해외에서 일하는 것도 하고 싶어 해요.

• I like not only tea but also coffee.

  저는 차뿐만 아니라 커피도 좋아해요. (coffee와 맞추려고 not only를 tea 앞에 둠)

대화에서는 원어민도 not only를 덜 균형 잡힌 자리에 두기도 하고(I not only like tea but also coffee), 아무도 신경 쓰지 않습니다. 하지만 글과 시험에서는 균형 잡힌 형태가 정답으로 인정됩니다.

더 강조하고 싶으면 Not only를 문장 맨 앞으로 옮길 수 있습니다. 그러면 앞부분은 도치되어, 의문문처럼 조동사가 주어 앞에 옵니다. 뒷부분은 보통 어순을 유지합니다: but + 주어 + (조동사) + also + 동사.

💡do / does / did를 빌려 쓸 때는 본동사가 원형으로 돌아갑니다: Not only does he speak(speaks가 아님), Not only did the shop cancel(cancelled가 아님). 요령: 앞부분을 yes/no 의문문으로 만들고(Does he speak Thai?) 그 앞에 Not only를 붙이세요.

도치 형태는 더 격식 있고 극적으로 들리며, 글, 연설, 뉴스에서 자주 쓰입니다. 대화에서는 보통 더 간단하게 말합니다: He's not only clever — he's really kind too.

• also의 위치: 짧은 형태에서는 but 바로 뒤(but also cheap). 완전한 절에서는 주어 뒤에 옵니다 — 일반동사 앞, 또는 조동사 / be동사 뒤: but she also coaches…, but it was also…, but she can also….
• also는 생략할 수 있습니다: not only cheap but delicious. 또는 also 대신 문장 끝에 as well / too를 쓸 수도 있습니다.
• 편한 말투에서는 but까지 빼기도 합니다: Not only is it cheap, it's also good for you.
• 두 주어를 연결할 때는 동사를 더 가까운 주어(B)에 맞춥니다.
• both … and와 비교해 보세요(「Both / either / neither」 레슨 참고): both A and B는 두 가지를 똑같이 다루고, not only A but also B는 B에 무게를 둡니다.

• The soup is not only cheap but really tasty.

  그 수프는 쌀 뿐만 아니라 정말 맛있어요. (also 생략)

• Not only did he apologise, but he paid for the damage as well.

  그는 사과했을 뿐만 아니라 손해 배상까지 했어요.

• Not only the kids but also their dad was soaked.

  아이들뿐만 아니라 아빠도 흠뻑 젖었어요. (동사는 their dad에 맞춤)

• Both the kids and their dad were soaked.

  아이들도 아빠도 모두 흠뻑 젖었어요. (both … and → 복수)

  Not only는 and가 아니라 but (also)와 짝을 이룹니다.

  Not only가 문장 맨 앞 → 조동사를 도치합니다.

  does 뒤에는 동사원형을 씁니다.

• ✗Not only we visited Hue, but we also went to Hoi An.

  과거형은 did를 빌려서 도치합니다.

• ✗She not only sings but also dancing.

  ✓She not only sings but also dances.

  두 부분은 같은 형태여야 합니다.

• ✗He not only plays the guitar but also he sings.

  ✓He not only plays the guitar but also sings. / … but he also sings.

  but also 뒤에는 짝이 맞는 부분만 둡니다. 주어를 살리려면 also를 주어 뒤에 두세요.
