Lección 117 · Etapa 10: Estructuras avanzadas
“Not only … but also”
AvanzadoForma y uso
not only … but (also) … — añadir un segundo punto, más fuerte
1.Forma
| Ejemplo |
|---|---|
| adjetivos | The room was not only cheap but also spotless. |
| sustantivos | She speaks not only Vietnamese but also Korean. |
| verbos | He not only cooked dinner but also washed up. |
| sintagmas preposicionales | The app is popular not only in Vietnam but also in Thailand. |
| oraciones (con inversión) | Not only did the bus leave late, but it also broke down. |
Igual que “no solo… sino también”, not only va con but: not only … but (also) …, no “not only … and also”. Ojo: en español a veces se dice “no solo… y además”, pero en inglés la pareja es siempre not only … but.
2.Mantén las dos partes en paralelo
Lo que va después de not only y lo que va después de but also debe ser el mismo tipo de elemento en la misma forma: adjetivo con adjetivo, verbo con verbo en el mismo tiempo, to + verbo con to + verbo. Pon not only justo antes de la primera parte.
Minh not only fixed my bike but also cleaned it.
I enjoy not only cooking but also eating.
No solo me gusta cocinar, sino también comer.
She wants not only to travel but also to work abroad.
I like not only tea but also coffee.
En la conversación, los nativos a veces ponen not only en un lugar menos equilibrado (I not only like tea but also coffee) y a nadie le importa.
3.Not only al principio: inversión
La segunda mitad mantiene el orden normal: but + sujeto + (auxiliar) + also + verbo.
| Verbo original | Inversión con Not only |
|---|---|
| be | Not only is the flat small, but it's also noisy. |
| presente simple → do / does | Not only does he speak Thai, but he also teaches it. |
| pasado simple → did | Not only did the shop cancel my order, but it also kept my money. |
| modales: can / will / should… | Not only can she sing, but she can also dance. |
| present perfect → have / has | Not only have prices gone up, but salaries have also fallen. |
Cuando tomas prestado do / does / did, el verbo principal vuelve a la forma base: Not only does he speak (no: speaks), Not only did the shop cancel (no: cancelled).
En la conversación se suele decir de forma más sencilla: He's not only clever — he's really kind too.
4.Variantes
- Dónde va also: justo después de but en la forma corta (but also cheap); en una oración completa va después del sujeto, antes de un verbo principal o después de un auxiliar / be: but she also coaches…, but it was also…, but she can also….
- Puedes quitar also: not only cheap but delicious. O sustituirlo por as well / too al final.
- En el habla informal, a veces también se quita but: Not only is it cheap, it's also good for you.
- Compáralo con both … and (mira la lección “Both / either / neither”): both A and B trata los dos puntos por igual; not only A but also B pone el peso en B.
The soup is not only cheap but really tasty.
(sin also)
Not only did he apologise, but he paid for the damage as well.
Not only the kids but also their dad was soaked.
Both the kids and their dad were soaked.
(both … and → plural)
5.Errores comunes

Not only va con but (also), no con and.

Después de does, usa la forma base.

El pasado simple toma prestado did para invertir.
She not only sings but also dancing. She not only sings but also dances.
