Lektion 117 · Etappe 10: Fortgeschrittene Strukturen
„Not only … but also“
Fortgeschritten“Not only … but also”
Form & Gebrauch
not only … but (also) … — einen zweiten, stärkeren Punkt hinzufügen
1.Form
not only A but (also) B fügt einem ersten Punkt A einen zweiten Punkt B hinzu — und B ist meistens stärker oder überraschender. A und B können Adjektive, Nomen, Verben, Präpositionalausdrücke oder ganze Sätze sein.
| Verbindet zwei… | Beispiel |
|---|---|
| Adjektive | The room was not only cheap but also spotless. |
| Nomen | She speaks not only Vietnamese but also Korean. |
| Verben | He not only cooked dinner but also washed up. |
| Präpositionalausdrücke | The app is popular not only in Vietnam but also in Thailand. |
| Sätze (mit Inversion) | Not only did the bus leave late, but it also broke down. |
Das entspricht genau dem deutschen „nicht nur …, sondern auch …“: not only … but (also) … — but ist hier „sondern“. Also nicht „not only … and also“ („und auch“).
2.Die beiden Teile parallel halten
Was nach not only und was nach but also kommt, sollte dieselbe Art von Wort in derselben Form sein: Adjektiv mit Adjektiv, Verb mit Verb in derselben Zeitform, to-Verb mit to-Verb. Stell not only direkt vor den ersten Teil.
Minh not only fixed my bike but also cleaned it.
I enjoy not only cooking but also eating.
She wants not only to travel but also to work abroad.
I like not only tea but also coffee.
(not only steht vor tea, passend zu coffee)
Im Gespräch setzen Muttersprachler not only manchmal an eine weniger ausgewogene Stelle (I not only like tea but also coffee), und niemand stört sich daran.
3.Not only am Satzanfang: Inversion
Für zusätzlichen Nachdruck kannst du Not only nach vorne stellen. Die zweite Hälfte behält die normale Wortstellung: but + Subjekt + (Hilfsverb) + also + Verb.
| Ursprüngliches Verb | Inversion mit Not only |
|---|---|
| be | Not only is the flat small, but it's also noisy. |
| Simple Present → do / does | Not only does he speak Thai, but he also teaches it. |
| Simple Past → did | Not only did the shop cancel my order, but it also kept my money. |
| Modalverben: can / will / should… | Not only can she sing, but she can also dance. |
| Present Perfect → have / has | Not only have prices gone up, but salaries have also fallen. |
Wenn du dir do / does / did leihst, steht das Hauptverb wieder in der Grundform: Not only does he speak (nicht: speaks), Not only did the shop cancel (nicht: cancelled). Trick: Schreib die erste Hälfte als Ja/Nein-Frage (Does he speak Thai?) und stell Not only davor.
Im Gespräch hält man es meist einfacher: He's not only clever — he's really kind too.
4.Varianten
- Wo also steht: In der Kurzform direkt nach but (but also cheap); in einem ganzen Satz steht es nach dem Subjekt — vor einem Hauptverb oder nach einem Hilfsverb / be: but she also coaches…, but it was also…, but she can also….
- Du kannst also weglassen: not only cheap but delicious. Oder du ersetzt es durch as well / too am Ende.
- In lockerer Sprache fällt manchmal auch but weg: Not only is it cheap, it's also good for you.
- Vergleich mit both … and (siehe die Lektion „Both / either / neither“): both A and B behandelt beide Punkte gleich; not only A but also B legt das Gewicht auf B.
The soup is not only cheap but really tasty.
(also weggelassen)
Not only did he apologise, but he paid for the damage as well.
Not only the kids but also their dad was soaked.
Both the kids and their dad were soaked.
(both … and → Plural)
5.Typische Fehler

Not only gehört zu but (also), nicht zu and.
Not only she is clever, but she is also hard-working.Not only is she clever, but she is also hard-working.
Not only am Satzanfang → Hilfsverb vor das Subjekt.

Nach does steht die Grundform.
Not only we visited Hue, but we also went to Hoi An.Not only did we visit Hue, but we also went to Hoi An.
She not only sings but also dancing. She not only sings but also dances.
Beide Teile müssen dieselbe Form haben.
