1.रूप (Form)
not only A but (also) B पहली बात A में एक दूसरी बात B जोड़ता है — और B आमतौर पर ज़्यादा ज़ोरदार या ज़्यादा हैरान करने वाली होती है। A और B विशेषण, संज्ञा, क्रिया, पूर्वसर्ग वाले वाक्यांश या पूरे उपवाक्य हो सकते हैं।

Not only की जोड़ी but से बनती है: not only … but (also) … — “not only … and also” नहीं। हिंदी में भी हम कहते हैं “न सिर्फ़ … बल्कि … भी” — यहाँ but ठीक “बल्कि” की जगह है, “और” की जगह नहीं।
2.दोनों हिस्सों को एक जैसा (parallel) रखें
not only के बाद और but also के बाद जो आए, वह एक ही तरह की चीज़, एक ही रूप में होनी चाहिए: विशेषण के साथ विशेषण, उसी काल में क्रिया के साथ क्रिया, to-verb के साथ to-verb। not only को पहले हिस्से के ठीक पहले रखें।
Minh not only fixed my bike but also cleaned it.

बातचीत में अंग्रेज़ी बोलने वाले कभी-कभी not only को थोड़ी बेमेल जगह रख देते हैं (I not only like tea but also coffee) और किसी को फ़र्क नहीं पड़ता। लेकिन लिखते समय और परीक्षा में संतुलित रूप ही सही माना जाता है।
3.शुरुआत में Not only: inversion
ज़्यादा ज़ोर देने के लिए Not only को वाक्य की शुरुआत में ला सकते हैं। तब पहले हिस्से में inversion होता है — प्रश्न की तरह सहायक क्रिया कर्ता से पहले आती है। दूसरा हिस्सा सामान्य क्रम में रहता है: but + कर्ता + (सहायक क्रिया) + also + क्रिया।

जब आप do / does / did उधार लेते हैं, तो मुख्य क्रिया अपने मूल रूप में लौट आती है: Not only does he speak (speaks नहीं), Not only did the shop cancel (cancelled नहीं)। तरकीब: पहले हिस्से को हाँ/ना वाले प्रश्न की तरह लिखें (Does he speak Thai?) और आगे Not only लगा दें।
Inversion वाला रूप ज़्यादा औपचारिक और नाटकीय है — लेखन, भाषणों और समाचारों में आम है। बातचीत में लोग इसे सरल रखते हैं: He's not only clever — he's really kind too।
4.कुछ और रूप
- also कहाँ आता है: छोटे रूप में but के ठीक बाद (but also cheap); पूरे उपवाक्य में यह कर्ता के बाद आता है — मुख्य क्रिया से पहले, या सहायक क्रिया / be के बाद: but she also coaches…, but it was also…, but she can also…।
- also हटा सकते हैं: not only cheap but delicious। या इसकी जगह अंत में as well / too लगा सकते हैं।
- अनौपचारिक बोलचाल में कभी-कभी but भी हटा दिया जाता है: Not only is it cheap, it's also good for you।
- जब यह दो कर्ताओं को जोड़ता है, तो क्रिया पास वाले कर्ता (B) से मेल खाती है।
- both … and से तुलना करें (पाठ “Both / either / neither” देखें): both A and B दोनों बातों को बराबर रखता है; not only A but also B ज़ोर B पर देता है।
The soup is not only cheap but really tasty.

5.आम गलतियाँ

Past Simple में inversion के लिए did उधार लेते हैं।

but also के बाद सिर्फ़ मेल खाने वाला हिस्सा रखें; कर्ता रखना हो तो also को उसके बाद लगाएँ।
