“Not only … but also”
AvanzatoForma e uso
not only … but (also) … — aggiungere un secondo punto, più forte
1.Forma
|---|---|
| due aggettivi | The room was not only cheap but also spotless. |
| due sostantivi | She speaks not only Vietnamese but also Korean. |
| due verbi | He not only cooked dinner but also washed up. |
| due complementi con preposizione | The app is popular not only in Vietnam but also in Thailand. |
| due frasi (con inversione) | Not only did the bus leave late, but it also broke down. |
Not only va in coppia con but: not only … but (also) …, non “not only … and also”. È proprio come l'italiano “non solo… ma anche”: but = ma, quindi niente and.
2.Le due parti devono essere parallele
Quello che viene dopo not only e quello che viene dopo but also devono essere lo stesso tipo di elemento, nella stessa forma: aggettivo con aggettivo, verbo con verbo allo stesso tempo, to-infinito con to-infinito. Metti not only subito prima della prima parte.
Minh not only fixed my bike but also cleaned it.
I enjoy not only cooking but also eating.
She wants not only to travel but also to work abroad.
I like not only tea but also coffee.
(not only va prima di tea, per corrispondere a coffee)
Nella conversazione i madrelingua a volte mettono not only in una posizione meno equilibrata (I not only like tea but also coffee), e nessuno ci fa caso. Nello scritto e agli esami, però, conta come corretta la versione equilibrata.
3.Not only all'inizio: l'inversione
Per dare più enfasi, puoi spostare Not only all'inizio. La seconda metà mantiene l'ordine normale: but + soggetto + (ausiliare) + also + verbo.
| Verbo di partenza | Inversione con Not only |
|---|---|
| be | Not only is the flat small, but it's also noisy. |
| present simple → do / does | Not only does he speak Thai, but he also teaches it. |
| past simple → did | Not only did the shop cancel my order, but it also kept my money. |
| modali: can / will / should… | Not only can she sing, but she can also dance. |
| present perfect → have / has | Not only have prices gone up, but salaries have also fallen. |
Quando prendi in prestito do / does / did, il verbo principale torna alla forma base: Not only does he speak (non: speaks), Not only did the shop cancel (non: cancelled). Trucco: scrivi la prima metà come una domanda sì/no (Does he speak Thai?) e mettici davanti Not only.
Nella conversazione di solito si semplifica: He's not only clever — he's really kind too.
4.Varianti
- Dove va also: subito dopo but nella forma breve (but also cheap); in una frase completa va dopo il soggetto, prima del verbo principale oppure dopo un ausiliare / be: but she also coaches…, but it was also…, but she can also….
- Puoi togliere also: not only cheap but delicious. Oppure sostituirlo con as well / too alla fine.
- Nel parlato informale a volte cade anche but: Not only is it cheap, it's also good for you.
- Confronta con both … and (vedi la lezione “Both / either / neither”): both A and B mette i due punti sullo stesso piano; not only A but also B dà più peso a B.
The soup is not only cheap but really tasty.
(also omesso)
Not only did he apologise, but he paid for the damage as well.
Not only the kids but also their dad was soaked.
Both the kids and their dad were soaked.
(both … and → plurale)
