“the more …, the more …”
고급“The more …, the more …”
|---|---|---|
| 짧은 형용사 / 부사 + -er | The older I get, | the calmer I feel. |
| more / less + 긴 형용사 | The more popular a restaurant is, | the longer you wait. |
| more / less / fewer + 명사 | The more friends you invite, | the more food we'll need. |
| more / less 단독 | The more I listen to this song, | the less I like it. |
The further you live from work, | the earlier you have to get up. |
한국어로는 “-(으)면 -(으)ㄹ수록”이라고 하고 관사가 없기 때문에, 특히 앞부분의 the를 빼먹기 쉽습니다(“More you sleep, the better…”).
The more you practise, the easier it gets.
The longer we waited, the angrier the customers got.
The less you spend now, the more you'll have for the trip.
The more time kids spend on screens, the fewer books they read.
The bigger the room, the higher the rent.
(= the bigger the room is, the higher the rent is)
When do you need it? — The sooner the better.
Can I bring my cousin? — Sure, the more the merrier!
- 비교급 덩어리 전체 — 함께 쓰는 형용사나 명사까지 포함해서 — 를 the 바로 뒤, 각 부분의 맨 앞에 둡니다: the more comfortable I feel(the more I feel comfortable이 아님), the more mistakes I make.
- 짧은 형용사는 more가 아니라 -er을 붙입니다: the harder, the cheaper, the busier(the more hard가 아님). 불규칙형: good → better, bad → worse, far → further / farther, much / many → more, little → less.
가 아니라 the more…
The more you practise, the better you'll speak(the more you will practise가 아님).
- be동사가 있으면 주어 + be 순서를 그대로 두거나 be를 뺍니다: the more expensive the ticket (is). 요즘의 일상 영어에서는 “the more expensive is the ticket”처럼 순서를 뒤집지 않습니다.
The more tired I get, the more mistakes I make.
The more you practise, the better you'll speak.
The more I got to know her, the more I liked her.
4.“more and more”와는 달라요
비교급 + and + 비교급(busier and busier, more and more expensive)은 한 가지가 시간이 지나면서 조금씩 변하는 것을 나타냅니다. The …, the …
Hanoi is getting busier and busier.
More and more people are working from home.
The busier Hanoi gets, the more I miss my quiet hometown.
시간에 따라 변하는 것이 하나 → -er and -er / more and more.
More you sleep, the better you feel. The more you sleep, the better you feel.
The more I study, the more better I understand. The more I study, the better I understand.
The longer I live here, the more I feel comfortable. The longer I live here, the more comfortable I feel.
The more hard you work, the more you earn. The harder you work, the more you earn.
The most I travel, the more I learn about myself. The more I travel, the more I learn about myself.
The more you will practise, the better you will speak. The more you practise, the better you'll speak.
