「the more …, the more …」
上級“The more …, the more …”
|---|---|---|
| 短い形容詞・副詞 + -er | The older I get, | the calmer I feel. |
| more / less + 長い形容詞 | The more popular a restaurant is, | the longer you wait. |
| more / less / fewer + 名詞 | The more friends you invite, | the more food we'll need. |
| more / less だけ | The more I listen to this song, | the less I like it. |
The further you live from work, | the earlier you have to get up. |
と言い、冠詞を使わないので、特に前半の the を落としがちです(「More you sleep, the better…」)。
The more you practise, the easier it gets.
The longer we waited, the angrier the customers got.
The less you spend now, the more you'll have for the trip.
The more time kids spend on screens, the fewer books they read.
The bigger the room, the higher the rent.
(= the bigger the room is, the higher the rent is)
When do you need it? — The sooner the better.
Can I bring my cousin? — Sure, the more the merrier!
- 比較級のかたまり全体 — 一緒に使う形容詞や名詞も含めて — を the のすぐ後ろ、それぞれの半分の先頭に置きます:the more comfortable I feel(the more I feel comfortable ではない)、the more mistakes I make。
- 短い形容詞は more ではなく -er をつけます:the harder、the cheaper、the busier(the more hard ではない)。不規則な形:good → better、bad → worse、far → further / farther、much / many → more、little → less。
であって、the most…
The more you practise, the better you'll speak(the more you will practise ではない)。
- be 動詞を使うときは 主語 + be の語順のままにするか、be を省きます:the more expensive the ticket (is)。今のふつうの英語では、「the more expensive is the ticket」のように語順を入れ替えません。
The more tired I get, the more mistakes I make.
The more you practise, the better you'll speak.
The more I got to know her, the more I liked her.
4.「more and more」とは違う
比較級 + and + 比較級(busier and busier、more and more expensive)は、1つのことが時間とともに少しずつ変化することを表します。The …, the …
Hanoi is getting busier and busier.
More and more people are working from home.
The busier Hanoi gets, the more I miss my quiet hometown.
時間とともに変化するものが1つ → -er and -er / more and more。
More you sleep, the better you feel. The more you sleep, the better you feel.
The more I study, the more better I understand. The more I study, the better I understand.
The longer I live here, the more I feel comfortable. The longer I live here, the more comfortable I feel.
The more hard you work, the more you earn. The harder you work, the more you earn.
The most I travel, the more I learn about myself. The more I travel, the more I learn about myself.
The more you will practise, the better you will speak. The more you practise, the better you'll speak.
