“The more …, the more …”

รูปแบบนี้เชื่อมการเปลี่ยนแปลงสองอย่างที่ไปด้วยกัน: The + ขั้นกว่า + ประธาน + กริยา, the + ขั้นกว่า + ประธาน + กริยา ทั้งสองครึ่งขึ้นต้นด้วย the และปกติมีจุลภาคคั่นกลาง

💡ภาษาไทยพูดว่า “ยิ่ง… ยิ่ง…” ซึ่งไม่มีคำนำหน้านาม ผู้เรียนจึงมักลืม the โดยเฉพาะในครึ่งแรก (“More you sleep, the better…”) จำไว้ว่า: สองครึ่ง = the สองตัว

1. สองสิ่งเปลี่ยนไปในทิศทางเดียวกัน

• The more you practise, the easier it gets.

  ยิ่งฝึกมาก ก็ยิ่งง่ายขึ้น

• The longer we waited, the angrier the customers got.

  ยิ่งเรารอนาน ลูกค้าก็ยิ่งโกรธ

2. สองสิ่งเปลี่ยนไปในทิศทางตรงข้ามกัน — ใช้ less / fewer ในครึ่งใดครึ่งหนึ่ง

• The less you spend now, the more you'll have for the trip.

  ยิ่งตอนนี้ใช้เงินน้อย ก็ยิ่งมีเงินไว้เที่ยวมาก

• The more time kids spend on screens, the fewer books they read.

  ยิ่งเด็ก ๆ ใช้เวลากับหน้าจอมาก ก็ยิ่งอ่านหนังสือน้อยลง

3. รูปย่อ — ตัดกริยา be ออก หรือเหลือแค่ขั้นกว่าสองตัวเมื่อความหมายชัดเจน

• The bigger the room, the higher the rent.

  ห้องยิ่งใหญ่ ค่าเช่าก็ยิ่งแพง (= the bigger the room is, the higher the rent is)

• When do you need it? — The sooner the better.

  จะเอาเมื่อไร — ยิ่งเร็วยิ่งดี

• Can I bring my cousin? — Sure, the more the merrier!

  ฉันพาลูกพี่ลูกน้องมาด้วยได้ไหม — ได้สิ ยิ่งคนเยอะยิ่งสนุก!

• วลีขั้นกว่าทั้งวลี — รวมทั้งคำคุณศัพท์หรือคำนามที่มาด้วยกัน — ต้องอยู่ถัดจาก the ทันที ที่ต้นครึ่งประโยคนั้น: the more comfortable I feel (ไม่ใช่: the more I feel comfortable), the more mistakes I make
• คุณศัพท์สั้นเติม -er ไม่ใช้ more: the harder, the cheaper, the busier (ไม่ใช่: the more hard) รูปไม่ปกติ: good → better, bad → worse, far → further / farther, much / many → more, little → less ดูบทเรียน “ขั้นกว่า”
• ใช้ขั้นกว่า ไม่ใช่ขั้นสุด: the more… ไม่ใช่ the most…
• ถ้าพูดถึงอนาคต ครึ่งแรกใช้ Present Simple และครึ่งหลังใช้ will — เหมือนประโยค if: The more you practise, the better you'll speak (ไม่ใช่: the more you will practise)
• ถ้ามี be ให้คงลำดับ ประธาน + be หรือตัด be ออกไปเลย: the more expensive the ticket (is) ในภาษาอังกฤษปัจจุบันทั่วไป อย่าสลับเป็น “the more expensive is the ticket”

• The more tired I get, the more mistakes I make.

  ยิ่งเหนื่อย ฉันก็ยิ่งทำพลาดมาก

• The more you practise, the better you'll speak.

  ยิ่งฝึกมาก คุณก็จะยิ่งพูดเก่ง (ครึ่งแรก: Present Simple)

• The more I got to know her, the more I liked her.

  ยิ่งได้รู้จักเธอ ฉันก็ยิ่งชอบเธอ (เล่าเรื่องในอดีต: ทั้งสองครึ่งเป็นอดีต)

ขั้นกว่า + and + ขั้นกว่า (busier and busier, more and more expensive) บอกว่าสิ่งเดียวค่อย ๆ เปลี่ยนไปตามเวลา ส่วน The …, the … เชื่อมสองสิ่ง: เมื่ออย่างหนึ่งเปลี่ยน อีกอย่างก็เปลี่ยนตาม

• Hanoi is getting busier and busier.

  ฮานอยวุ่นวายขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ

• More and more people are working from home.

  คนทำงานจากบ้านมากขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ

• The busier Hanoi gets, the more I miss my quiet hometown.

  ยิ่งฮานอยวุ่นวาย ฉันก็ยิ่งคิดถึงบ้านเกิดที่เงียบสงบ

💡ถามตัวเองว่ามีกี่สิ่งที่เปลี่ยนไป สิ่งเดียวเปลี่ยนไปตามเวลา → -er and -er / more and more (…ขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ) สองสิ่ง โดยการเปลี่ยนแปลงของอย่างหนึ่งทำให้อีกอย่างเปลี่ยน → the …, the … (ยิ่ง… ยิ่ง…)

• ✗More you sleep, the better you feel.

  ✓The more you sleep, the better you feel.

  ครึ่งแรกก็ต้องมี the

• ✗The more I study, the more better I understand.

  better เป็นขั้นกว่าอยู่แล้ว — ไม่ต้องเติม more

• ✗The longer I live here, the more I feel comfortable.

  ✓The longer I live here, the more comfortable I feel.

  คำคุณศัพท์ต้องอยู่กับ the more ข้างหน้า

• ✗The more hard you work, the more you earn.

  ✓The harder you work, the more you earn.

  hard เป็นคำสั้น จึงเป็น harder

• ✗The most I travel, the more I learn about myself.

  ✓The more I travel, the more I learn about myself.

  ใช้ขั้นกว่า ไม่ใช่ขั้นสุด

• ✗The more you will practise, the better you will speak.

  ✓The more you practise, the better you'll speak.

  ครึ่งแรกใช้ Present Simple เพื่อพูดถึงอนาคต
