“It is said that…”

ถ้าจะเล่าว่าผู้คนพูด เชื่อ หรือคิดอะไรโดยไม่บอกว่าใคร ภาษาอังกฤษมีสองรูปแบบ: It + be + กริยาช่อง 3 + that + อนุประโยค หรือ ประธาน + be + กริยาช่อง 3 + to-infinitive พบบ่อยในข่าว รายงาน และงานเขียนทางการ และช่วยรักษาระยะห่าง — ผู้เขียนไม่ได้ยืนยันว่าเป็นความจริง

กริยาที่ใช้บ่อย: say, think, believe, know, consider, expect, report, understand, allege, estimate กับ consider ตัด to be ออกได้: He is considered (to be) the best player.

💡“it” ในรูปแบบที่ 1 เป็นประธานไร้ความหมาย (empty subject) — ตัดทิ้งไม่ได้ ภาษาไทยพูดว่า “มีคนบอกว่า…” หรือ “ว่ากันว่า…” โดยไม่ต้องมีประธานแบบนี้ ผู้เรียนจึงมักเขียน “Is said that…” ถ้าอยากคงคำว่า “people” ไว้ ให้ใช้รูป active: People say that… — ไม่ใช่ “People are said that…”

ในรูปแบบที่ 2 infinitive บอกว่าเรื่องที่เล่าเกิดขึ้นพร้อมกับ ก่อน หรือหลังการพูดหรือการเชื่อ:

• Coffee is thought to have been brought to Vietnam by the French.

  เชื่อกันว่ากาแฟถูกนำเข้ามาในเวียดนามโดยชาวฝรั่งเศส (เกิดขึ้นนานแล้ว → to have been V3)

• The singer is reported to be in hospital.

  มีรายงานว่านักร้องคนนั้นอยู่ในโรงพยาบาล

• More than 300 people are known to have attended the meeting.

  ทราบกันว่ามีคนเข้าร่วมประชุมมากกว่า 300 คน

is said / is believed = ผู้คนพูดหรือเชื่อแบบนั้นในตอนนี้ was said / was believed = ผู้คนเคยพูดหรือเชื่อแบบนั้นในอดีต (ตอนนี้อาจไม่แล้ว) ใช้ Present Perfect ก็ได้: It has been reported that…

• The Earth was once believed to be flat.

  ครั้งหนึ่งผู้คนเคยเชื่อว่าโลกแบน

• The ship was thought to have sunk in a storm.

  ตอนนั้นเชื่อกันว่าเรือลำนั้นจมเพราะพายุ

• It has been reported that two people were injured.

  มีรายงานว่ามีผู้ได้รับบาดเจ็บสองคน

กับ there: There is said to be… = It is said that there is… ในบทสนทนาทั่วไปคนไม่ค่อยใช้รูปแบบเหล่านี้ แต่จะพูดว่า They say…, Apparently… หรือ be supposed to (= ว่ากันว่า)

• There are thought to be fewer than a hundred of these birds left in the wild.

  เชื่อกันว่านกชนิดนี้เหลืออยู่ในธรรมชาติไม่ถึงร้อยตัว

• That new pho place is supposed to be really good.

  ได้ยินว่าร้านเฝอที่เปิดใหม่อร่อยมาก (ไม่เป็นทางการ = ใคร ๆ ก็พูดกัน)

• They say the shop on the corner is closing down.

  ได้ยินว่าร้านตรงหัวมุมกำลังจะปิดกิจการ

💡be supposed to ยังมีอีกความหมาย: “ควรต้องทำตามกฎหรือแผน” (You're supposed to wear a helmet) ดูบทเรียน “Be supposed to / about to / likely to”

• ✗Is said that the airport will open next year.

  ✓It is said that the airport will open next year.

  ต้องมีประธานไร้ความหมาย It

• ✗He is believed to steal the money last year.

  ✓He is believed to have stolen the money last year.

  เกิดขึ้นก่อนหน้านั้น → to have + V3

• ✗The museum is known being the oldest in the city.

  ✓The museum is known to be the oldest in the city.

  be known / said / thought + to-infinitive ไม่ใช่ -ing

• ✗People say him to be very rich.

  ✓He is said to be very rich. / People say that he is very rich.

  say ไม่มีรูป active แบบ say + คน + to-infinitive

• ✗The lake says to be very deep.

  ✓The lake is said to be very deep.

  ทะเลสาบพูดไม่ได้ → ใช้ passive is said

• ✗She is said to be won the prize twice.

  ✓She is said to have won the prize twice.

  การกระทำในอดีต แบบ active → to have + V3
