“It is said that…”

İnsanların ne söylediğini, neye inandığını ya da ne düşündüğünü kim olduklarını belirtmeden aktarmak için İngilizcede iki kalıp vardır: It + be + V3 + that + yan cümle ya da özne + be + V3 + to-mastar. Haberlerde, raporlarda ve resmî yazılarda yaygındır ve mesafe koyar — yazar bunun doğru olduğunu iddia etmez.

Sık kullanılan fiiller: say, think, believe, know, consider, expect, report, understand, allege, estimate. consider ile to be atılabilir: He is considered (to be) the best player.

💡Türkçede “Zengin olduğu söyleniyor” deriz — cümlede özne yoktur. Bu yüzden “Is said that…” yazmak cazip gelir. Ama kalıp 1'deki it bir boş öznedir ve atılamaz. “İnsanlar”ı korumak istiyorsan etken yapıyı kullan: People say that… — “People are said that…” değil.

Kalıp 2'de mastar, aktarılan şeyin söyleme ya da inanma anıyla aynı zamanda mı, daha önce mi yoksa daha sonra mı olduğunu gösterir:

• Coffee is thought to have been brought to Vietnam by the French.

  Kahvenin Vietnam'a Fransızlar tarafından getirildiği düşünülüyor. (uzun zaman önce oldu → to have been V3)

• The singer is reported to be in hospital.

  Şarkıcının hastanede olduğu bildiriliyor.

• More than 300 people are known to have attended the meeting.

  Toplantıya 300'den fazla kişinin katıldığı biliniyor.

is said / is believed = insanlar bunu şimdi söylüyor ya da buna şimdi inanıyor. was said / was believed = geçmişte böyle söyleniyordu ya da buna inanılıyordu (belki artık değil). Present Perfect de mümkündür: It has been reported that…

• The Earth was once believed to be flat.

  Bir zamanlar Dünya'nın düz olduğuna inanılıyordu.

• The ship was thought to have sunk in a storm.

  Geminin bir fırtınada battığı düşünülüyordu.

• It has been reported that two people were injured.

  İki kişinin yaralandığı bildirildi.

there ile: There is said to be… = It is said that there is… Gündelik sohbette bu kalıplar pek kullanılmaz; insanlar They say…, Apparently… ya da be supposed to (= söylenene göre) der.

• There are thought to be fewer than a hundred of these birds left in the wild.

  Doğada bu kuşlardan yüzden az kaldığı düşünülüyor.

• That new pho place is supposed to be really good.

  O yeni pho dükkânının çok iyi olduğu söyleniyor. (gündelik = söylenene göre)

• They say the shop on the corner is closing down.

  Köşedeki dükkânın kapanacağını söylüyorlar.

💡be supposed to'nun başka bir anlamı da var: “bir kurala ya da plana göre … -malı” (You're supposed to wear a helmet). “Be supposed to / about to / likely to” dersine bak.

• ✗Is said that the airport will open next year.

  ✓It is said that the airport will open next year.

  Boş özne It gerekir.

• ✗He is believed to steal the money last year.

  ✓He is believed to have stolen the money last year.

  Daha önce oldu → to have + V3.

• ✗The museum is known being the oldest in the city.

  ✓The museum is known to be the oldest in the city.

  be known / said / thought + to-mastar gelir, -ing değil.

• ✗People say him to be very rich.

  ✓He is said to be very rich. / People say that he is very rich.

  say'in say + kişi + to-mastar şeklinde bir etken kalıbı yoktur.

• ✗The lake says to be very deep.

  ✓The lake is said to be very deep.

  Göl bir şey söylemez → edilgen is said.

• ✗She is said to be won the prize twice.

  ✓She is said to have won the prize twice.

  Geçmişteki etken bir eylem → to have + V3.
